Nestled in a rustic setting, Rataskaevu16 is lauded for its charming and cozy atmosphere that captivates guests with its characterful aesthetic. The restaurant's cuisine receives high praise for creativity and flavor, although smaller portions and the occasional oversalted dish are noted by some. Travelers appreciate the value, considering it a premium dining experience without an exorbitant price tag. While service is generally celebrated for its friendliness and knowledgeability, there are rare mentions of slower service and overlooked orders.

We’ve tried more than once to eat here but it really is essential to book in advance, such is the popularity of this restaurant. This time we reserved a table and what an experience this place is. Everyone is welcomed like long lost friends, the customer service is really good. Everything on the menu is imaginatively thought out by the kitchen personnel. The portions are not large but the food is a delight and considering the quality the prices are reasonable too. The waiters explain in detail what’s on your plate and the provenance of the ingredients. We were also given some gorgeous bread baked on the premises, with local butter as well. The desserts are unmissable. Our waiter, David, was a model of efficiency and friendliness. Tallinn has some fine restaurants and this one is up there with the very best you will find anywhere.

We booked in advance as per the advice on trip advisor and friends. We are glad we did! The restaurant was fully booked and they were having to turn people away when we were leaving. If I could give this restaurant a higher rating I would. We honestly found no faults what so ever during our visit. The service was impeccable, the food out of this world and the style and atmosphere of the restaurant was perfection for us. For the starter, I took the lightly smoked beef tenderloin and my girlfriend took the freshly salted salmon. For the main we both took the beef tenderloin and to finish it off we both took the warm chocolate cake. To accompany the meal we took an Italian house red. All courses were absolutely amazing and the wine was exactly how our waiter described it. The staff clearly had very good knowledge about both the food and wine menu and were quick, polite and funny, while also giving us plenty of space to enjoy our meal. I would seriously consider travelling again to Tallinn purely to eat at this restaurant. I can not recommend it highly enough. Thank you for the wonderful evening, it was the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary ❤️

I had high expectations of this restaurant after reading all the great reviews. I was lucky to have a table in this place. It is often fully booked but I still recommend to try and ask if they have free tables. First of all the atmosphere in this restaurant was amazing. The staff was super friendly and happy to answer all of our questions! I could see from the people working there that they enjoy their work and want to serve the customers the best they ever can. We had 3 meals that were all amazing! Salads as a starter were nothing like a normal boring salad. All the meals were innovative. The fish as a main dish was great and their vegatarian options also seemed to be super fresh and tasty. As a dessert we had the warm chocolate cake that blew our minds. It was the best chocolate cake we’ve ever had! I highly recommend this place as it is probably the best you can find in Tallinn!

The atmosphere in the restaurant is nice, the waiters are friendly and communicate with guests a lot, explaining a lot about the meal courses. But it's easy to notice that they all use the same tricks: like adults do with kinds, they sit to be on the same level with you to create a "friendly" one-level feeling. I guess this explains a bunch of good reviews of this restaurant - people simply like the waiters:) Or do not understand anything about good food. However, the food is not delicious. I can say for sure tenderloin steak was frozen before it was cooked. The taste was ok, but still you do not expect the meat in good restaurants to be prepared from frozen ingredients. Appetizers were way too saulty. But the home made bread the serve is really good (normally I do not eat bread, but this one was one of a kind). We payed twice more than for normal dinner in Tallinn (150 Euros for 2 appetizers, 2 main courses, dessert and a bottle of wine), but this one was definitely not the best.

Usually I'm a bit vary of places which get so much praise and topping the rating lists especially in such tourists magnets as Old Tallinn, because it happened to me before, and I think will happen in future, but usually I was awaiting something spectacular from those places and they dragged me back to earth in most of the cases, but I still, sometimes, stubbornly giving them another go. Also, maybe I not enough gourmand or even close to it to appreciate all the staff in those reviews and critics, but when I see such praise I expect something spectacular, naturally, so to get to the point - place is severely overpraised. Yes, atmosphere is nice, but space between tables maybe had to be bit wider - understood that they trying to squeeze as much as possible from the limited amount of resources in old town but anyway, so inevitably it feels more like pub or cafe, but not restaurant. Food is OK , on the better side of the spectrum taste and flavor wise, however taste not justifies the price and portions size. I know that gourmet food is mostly for enjoying and not filling your stomach, but in that case, either myself, as I've said previously, not enough of gourmand, or the food is not so gourmet as it pretends to be, so after the meal I neither was filling that I quenched my hunger, nor enjoyed the taste much. It's not a bad place in any way, but be aware that at least now some factors like being the place in an area heavily crowded with tourists, and trying to be something it is not taking their toll in a form of prices and pretenses for higher class than they are.

I cannot speak highly enough of the experience I had here. It is a warm, welcoming restaurant with quite a homey decor. The staff seem to genuinely love working there and our server Kristjan could not have been more wonderful and friendly. He took great care of us and made us feel like a priority. The food was outstanding. As a vegetarian, the choice was slightly limited but it didn’t matter because everything was so delicious. All three courses were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavour. The fresh bread baked in the restaurant every day is very tasty. Incredible value for money - we actually couldn’t believe how low our bill was considering the quality of the meal and service. If I ever return to Tallinn, I will definitely eat here again.

A short distance from the old town square and you stumble across one of the best restaurants in Tallinn. The dishes are created from locally sourced produce and creatively combined and presented to form unique and sensational dishes. Our waitress Taivi was excellent and so well informed about each dish and the source of the ingredients. Taste wise, this restaurant compares with any Michelin star restaurant that we have visited over the years. The menu also offers insane value for money. My advice, just go there!

A very popular restaurant in Tallinn so book a table in advance ! The staff is young and enthusiastic. Very friendly and attentive , still our nice waitress had to check our order three times as she didn’t write it down . The food was beautifully presented and tasty , although the lamb leg was slightly dry . They had an impressive choice of wines , but unfortunately the NZ wine we chose was among the worst wines I’ve never drank ..... but I guess you can’t blame the restaurant as it is a matter of taste . A nice ( some could find it a bit cheesy ) touch is , that when you get the bill , the staff has written little notes by hand like “ you are a lovely couple “ etc . Surely something different .

We ate here in January 2020 with five adults and four children and had the best meal of the trip. We ate Estonian food in both traditional and new styles - no-one was disappointed. We had a wide range of meals from the menu and there was good food for the kids at reasonable prices too. The drinks were equally excellent but maybe avoid the chokeberry wine - it's an acquired taste, I'm sure.

We visited Rataskaevu 16 after trekking around Tallinn trying to find somewhere that had at least one good vegetarian option and I'm so pleased we found this place! Hands down one of my top 5 meals in my almost 29 years of existence. I had the mushroom tartar as a starter, the salmon for main and the beetroot ice cream with pistachio cream for dessert and every single course was delicious. The homemade bread that also comes at the start of the meal was even beautiful too! We also loved the venue and were very grateful to the waiters who took the time to answer our questions on the history of the building, which was wooden beams from the 14th century. (Make sure to ask about the hidden window outside and to use the back toilet!) But the main selling point of this place for us was our wonderful waiter Sebastian. He was so friendly and knowledgeable and took the time to answer all of our questions on the history of the place, the food and the Estonian language. He even gave us a few tips for places to visit too. I'd highly recommend visiting Rataskaevu 16, for both the food and the wonderful waiting staff.

What a spectacular meal! After an hr or two of walking around town we decided it was time for some lunch. After not being able to get a table the previous night I knew exactly where I wanted to go for lunch. The waiter was super friendly and prevented my indecisiveness with a few recommendations for not necessarily Estonian fair, but some ingredients that you might find in Estonian food. I started with the Baltic Herring with cottage cheese and salad. I generally don’t like any of the components outside of salad, but if I’m going to ask the waiter for a recommendation the least I could do was try it. Much to my surprise it was actually not bad (which for the level of distaste I generally have for all of the ingredients is a pretty glowing endorsement). I followed this up with the braised elk with creamed cauliflower in a currant sauce (or something with most of not all of those words.) Having never tasted elk before I figured it was worth a go. It was cooked to perfection and the vegetables, creamed cauliflower, and sauce was a small slice of heaven. To finish this off I chose the beetroot ice cream. The waiter said it was a dessert for those that don’t like sweet or desserts. It was INCREDIBLE! The pistachio in coconut milk was incredibly tasty, the ice cream had the perfect amount of sweet and sour, and the sauce around the plate was nearly completely sour. The trio was perfection on a plate. Highly recommend this place if you can get in.

7 of us came here late one Thursday night with no reservation, hoping for the best. Luckily, a table from upstairs were just leaving, and they managed to fit us in. I would definitely recommend booking if you want to eat here...and you should. As it was late, we were told the kitchen would be shutting in 20 minutes and that if we ordered starters and mains, they would come at the same time. This was perfectly fine for us, and we appreciated the staff and kitchen going out of their way to fit a large party in late at night. The waitress we had, cannot remember her name but she was small and blonde, was excellent. Very friendly and chatty. 10/10 service. The food was excellent as well. We had a variety of starters, mains and desserts between us. Everything tasted lovely, was cooked to perfection and none of us had one complaint. Some stand outs were the beef tenderloin, pulled elk meat, salmon, braised elk meat and the warm chocolate cake. Was a pleasant environment to sit in and we all had a wonderful evening on our last night in Tallinn.

All I can say is wow! I have several complicated food allergies and the team at Rataskaevu 16 went above and beyond to ensure that everything I was served was safe for me to eat. Our waitress, Elizabeth, was one of the most top notch and genuine individuals I have ever met. Not only am I looking forward to my next trip to Tallinn because of its unending beauty but also to head back to Rataskaevu 16! Cheers

We ate here twice & it was amazing food. We got 2 loaves of their home baked bread to take home. The portion size was adequate & well presented. The staff are very keen to help with the menu details so it's really easy to know what you are getting. Nice for lunch & dinner but remember to book as they are quite busy.

The food and service was outstanding...just make sure to have a reservation or you'll likely not get in. Food was unique and beautifully prepared. The most interesting part was a blue cheesecake desert option (pictured) that balanced sweet, creamy, and salty - delicious.
