We visited the Cartwheel Inn for lunch whilst on holiday in Salisbury. There was a sanitising station at the door and we were shown to our table and given menu's. There were both Ala Carte and 2 or 3 course special menu's available. We chose meals from the 2 courses for £17.00 menu and opted for venison faggots and corn fed chicken. Our meals arrived on pre-warmed plates and were served piping hot. The corn fed chicken was very nice. The faggots were tasty but a little too rich and the fatty casing / skin not very appetizing. For desserts we chose the Cartwheel mess and fruit crumble. The Cartwheel mess was very nice, light and full of fresh flavour. The crumble too was very good, buttery and sweet with the fruit not over cooked or stewed. We chose to visit here based on the reviews and pictures (many of which have been posted by management) and were slightly underwhelmed. There was very little atmosphere and some of the presentation was not as good as expected when comparing to the pictures posted on previous reviews. The service was polite but not very attentive. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. The only other slight negative to note was that the background music kept on cutting out which was annoying.

Following the SATNAV is not always a great idea. After a harrowing journey along extremely narrow twisty lanes we were mightily relieved to arrive at the Cartwheel Arms in Whistbury. There is a respectably sized car park. We received a very warm welcome from the cheerful young server and we were able to choose from any of the widely dispersed tables in the beautiful cottage garden. The food certainly met our high expectations, arriving punctually and with a smile. There was a wide range of options with a number of specials available. Presentation matched the flavours of the main meals. It was good to see the chef doing the rounds of the tables, enjoying friendly banter with the diners. Desserts were interesting as well. We felt that the bill represented good value for money and would have no hesitation in recommending this establishment for its fine cuisine and attractive ambiance. We followed my nose on the way back - a straight shot to Fordingbridge and then main roads.

Wonderful food, superb service, covid secure, dog friendly. We had the roast dinners, 2 roast chicken and 1 roast beef. The chicken breast was tender and succulent, came with roast potatoes, huge Yorkshire pudding, fresh vegetables and cauliflower cheese, your own portion of gravy. The beef was tender and flavoursome. For dessert We ordered chocolate cremeux and local cheese and biscuits.

Having eaten here and enjoyed the food & friendly service on multiple occasions before, we decided to book here for a joint birthday celebration. 8 of us booked for 14:30 on a Sunday afternoon. The young waitress (Annie) was extremely attentive, took our order promptly and had great knowledge of both the drinks and menu. We ordered a bottle of wine which was slapped down on the table by the lady in charge. She didn’t ask if we’d like it poured and the lid was not taken off the bottle (very unusual as this lady has been particularly attentive to detail on previous visits). Our food came quickly & was delicious, very hot & were all very generous servings. A different waitress brought the food to the table but didn’t call for the individual dishes therefore we had to ask what she had in her hand when she was at the table. Annie on the other hand could remember what we had ordered and placed the food down accordingly. Before leaving the table she ensured we had everything we needed which was a nice touch. It was a shame that during the meal, a member of staff didn’t come to the table to ask how everything was and then sadly we also sat with our finished plates in front of us for an extended period of time. We weren’t offered more drinks or desserts. The pub closes at 4 on a Sunday and this was made very clear by the staff who were by this point not voluntarily attentive and we’re instead sitting having a chat by the fire with customers who I’d imagine to be local people. It was disappointing that I had to get up to ask for our plates to be cleared, to order more drinks & to see a dessert menu. Another bottle of wine was ordered and again was just slammed down on the table by the same lady. The desserts came and were delicious. Again our plates weren’t cleared and we had little interaction after our desserts were delivered until we paid the bill. Overall, the food was lovely but the service was surprisingly disappointing for what is usually a friendly & personal service pub. I’m not sure I’d rush to make a Sunday booking again but wouldn’t avoid the pub entirely as this was unusual.

Hi Abi. Thank you for your review. Firstly I am glad you all enjoyed your food when you visited us. However I am bitterly disappointed that our service was not up to its usual standard that you have received in the past. Sometimes things do go wrong and we must put our hands up when events like this occur. We have had staff recruitment issues like ever other hospitality venue. Most of our staff are new and are still getting to know the ropes. They are all fantastic and I am sure they will all be up to speed in the near future. I am sure you noticed that all our staff are still wearing face shields and masks for your and their protection. We are also trying to keep a social distance from our customers so we have not been showing our guests to the table(hence why ever table have large table numbers on) and we haven't been pouring the wine for our guests since we reopened. Sundays are manic as you saw and must apologise that you felt the wine was slapped on the table and that you were forgotten about. There seems to be a little confusion over our closing time. Last orders for main courses is 4pm- the kitchen will remain open till required- and the pub itself shuts at 6pm during the winter period. I am deeply disappointed to read your review after you have experienced such good service and food in the past. In balance it would of been nice to read a positive review of a past visit too. We all have off days and we will learn our lessons for the future. All in all I must sincerely apologise for your experience and hope that you can forgive us and give us another chance. Paul & Annette

We booked for a meal on the last night of a week away, what a great way to finish our break. We were greeted warmly and seated in a summer house in the garden which had blankets and a heater to keep us comfortable as the weather was still chilly. The meal was fab, cooked to order, got and great quality. We shared the cooked meat platter to start then monkfish and steak mains were very tasty followed by chocolate fondant cooked perfectly. We look forward to returning to try some more dishes when we're in the area later on in the year.

We booked at the Cartwheel for our daughter's 30th Birthday gathering that had been delayed, like so many others, for a year. When booking, I mentioned that her favourite was Monkfish and asked if it would be on the menu. They did not put it on the menu but made is specially for her. We were seated under a pergola which had been decorated with bunting saying Happy Birthday. All the food we had was cooked to the highest quality and having eaten at Michelin starred restaurants in London can honestly say this was very much on a par. Lovely couple from Dumfries run the restaurant. Delighted with the whole experience and are looking to take another holiday locally so that we can go there again. (We were a party of 5, 2 from Cornwall, 2 from London and one from Chichester.

Emerging from pandemic , new procedures in place which do not take anything from service or quality . Dining experience very good . The food , sauces , chutneys all made by the kitchen team. Generous portions , well prepared and presented . Some of the takeaway ideas from the lockdown period have become popular and now feature on the main menu ..rack of ribs being popular .

Thanks for your fantastic review. it was great to see you back after such a long time due to this dreadful virus. We have had to change and adapt the way we operate along with a few changes on the main menu which are going down well. See again soon. The Cartwheel Team

We had a family gathering of 14 and wanted a special meal. This wasn't easy in a covid safe way but Paul and Annette couldn't have been more helpful. They even put a gazebo up so we could all eat outside and be distanced. The food was lovely from start to finish with a good menu to choose from. We pre ordered and nobody was disappointed. I will definitely be going back and would recommend the Cartwheel to anyone. Thanks Paul, Annette and your team

Thank you Damien for your review. It was our pleasure to help you and your family to have a safe and enjoyable experience. We must thankyou for abiding by the guidelines - you all stayed on your allocated tables and stuck to the social distancing rules. This can often be hard work and difficult but this was certainly not the case with yourselves. Can't wait to see you all again in the near future. The Cartwheel team

This may go on for a while .? A year ago I proposed to the love of my life and we searched Hampshire and the local area to find a location that would not only meet our needs for a wedding venue but surpass them. We tried many locations, finding rude, pushy people who didn’t manage to actually listen or HEAR what we were looking for so when we came across the Cartwheel none could compare in meeting our requirements, great location, fantastic venue, awesome food and Paul and Annette have excelled in helping us have the day we wanted and not the day an Inn owner would try and impose on us. We took on the entire Inn and grounds We had that personal touch that is lost and forgotten in so many venues who solely focus on weddings as a money making scheme We hired the Cartwheel Inn , Annette led with her personal touch in creating a beautiful location with Paul taking the lead in the kitchen, surpassing our expectation with a bespoke gastro menu for our guests We had a day that defined who we are, not only in venue choice but in the food and personal touch offered to us by both Paul and Annette I cannot express enough how they made our wedding truly magical, truly bespoke to us for us and our girls who they took under their wing. For those wishing for that personal touch, that sense of being listened to, that sense that nothing is too much trouble, and then guess what …….. actually getting what you want , go personal go bespoke go gastro, bigger is certainly not always best ….! We shall return always just to meet some new friends that we made on our journey , Paul and Annette not only managed the day, but they were part of it And for those on here who think those in the Cartwheel are rude let’s be honest you probably deserved it !,,, as for us nothing could be further from the truth Go eat and find your perfect day, or just a perfect afternoon or evening

Paul & Annette at the Cartwheel Inn are simply the nicest hosts you could ever wish for. Food - amazing, huge portions (too big if anything) and utterly delicious Service - Annette is a warm, friendly lady who is very knowledgeable about the ales on tap (regularly rotated) and, alongside Molly, provided very swift service When the night came to an end we realised we were a bit stranded, having booked a taxi to the Cartwheel Inn but not booked a return one (assuming it'd be as easy to do and that we'd do that once we knew when we'd be ready for collection). After calling all local taxis and realising how stuck we were, Paul offered to drop us back to our accommodation in Fordingbridge after closing up. He refused to accept any payment for this (we tried!!) - he & Annette are so kind and I cannot recommend the Cartwheel Inn highly enough.

My husband and I ate here this evening and had wonderful food with amazing service. The food was delicious , we had pie and mash and mussels with chips followed by apple and gooseberry crumble and blueberry creme brûlée. All amazing! We then had tea which was served with a little square of delicious fudge and a little shot of jelly sweets accompanied the bill. The staff were attentive and the service was faultless. Lovely atmosphere and good selection of local ales. Definitely the place to come if you are in the area.

3 of us had dinner there last night and it was amazing. Menu choices excellent - as was the food. I had the Moules Mariniere and Rump of lamb - both of which were delicious and cooked to perfection. The pub is delightful and the garden absolutely beautiful. Very genial hosts Annette and Paul (landlord and chef) are very welcoming and deserve great success. They were fully booked which shows that their reputation for food, ambience and service is already well established. I shall definitely be returning. Well done to the Cartwheel team!!

Thank you for your review Lorraine. Such kind and heartfelt words of praise from you are why we do this profession. It has been difficult during the last few weeks for us to accommodate all our customers. Thankfully we have seating for 51 in the garden and have mostly achieved this. With the weather turning we have now put up a Gazebo so people can enjoy the outside for a little longer. The Cartwheel Team

Fabulous visit for food & drinks today (not our first time). The food and service is consistently good here from what we’ve experienced over the last 3 ish years. Hubby had sirloin steak which was cooked and trimmed to perfection and I shared the pie with my 15 month old - all fab! Hubby managed a pudding (apple and gooseberry crumble) which was absolutely beautiful - his girls helped him out! ;)
