Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Six of us had brunch here and the portions were very generous and delicious. The staff were friendly and professional but with a good sense of humour. Coffee was great and the setting and views were perfect. Well done guys.

Sometimes when you see a menu this extensive, it’s means the restaurant is trying to do too much and doesn’t do any of it well. Not the case here! I had the Akaroa sea run salmon, with sticky rice and a honey & soy sauce,...while my mum went for the very different confit duck. Both dishes were simply fantastic - there’s no other word for it. Service was quick and attentive without being cloying and we had a great night. And when we popped back a couple of days later for lunch, the tapas style dishes were great too - I especially liked the crispy pork belly cubes. Phenomenal location too; I could have spent all day there, just staring out across the harbour.More

They offer something for everyone, and that’s true of the extensive food and drink menus, but we didn’t find it better than good in any respect. Quite expensive for what it was.

Excellent place to eat, great service, great choices on the menu and lovely friendly staff. Menu gives lots of lovely choices, we could eat here every night for a week and be very happy. The depth of flavours in my seafood risotto was astounding and...the food came in good time even when full. When in Akaroa you don’t need to visit fancy French named places, Bully Hayes has all angles covered and wins hands down in all respects. Don’t miss Bully’s when your here, better book because it gets very busy.More

Very yummy on a fabulous day. I at the Chowder it was really good. My husband had the fish and chips equally yummy. The tour guide ate and shared the bowl of Mussels and they were delicious. The staff was friendly. We would definitely recommend.

Solid 4 out of 5 for this busy eatery along the stunning Akaroa waterfront on a perfect summer evening. We were hungry for salad after a couple days of full-on holiday dining, and the team here delivered in all respects - thank you! Prompt courteous...service, comfortable outdoor seating, plenty of choice on the menu and a great garden salad with arancini for extra sustenance (not really needed but delicious even so!) Kitchen closed at 8pm on a Monday so don't leave it too late.More

We decided to do a day trip to Akaroa and stopped here as I knew they had seafood chowder and my partner had mentioned he would like that for lunch. It was pretty average to be honest. I had the fish tacos and that was...the biggest waste of money. Three mini tacos with like a small slice of fish in each. Definitely over priced. I don't know if this place has a high chair, but that would have been so helpful. Also, I felt like one of the staff was stating at my daughter whenever I looked up. Kinda creeped me out. Overall, it's a no from me and I won't be back.More

Great view, staff and menu. Booked 4 weeks before our trip. We were welcomed like old friends, staff so friendly, professional and clearly love what they do. Was our last night in New Zealand and this was the perfect place to spent it. Good wine/drinks...list. 2 travellers shared the seafood platter - very so good and we finished it all. Great selection of fresh seafood, sauces, salad. One traveller had a steak and our 4th traveller a pasta dish. All 4 of us mature traveller's were very happy with our meals, the quality, presentation and our wines.More

To me, Bully Hayes is a bisto-style restaurant with a gorgeous sea-view. I have food allergies, so asked if the Patatas Bravos(?) could be served with no dairy or gluten. It came exactly as I asked and was very tasty even without the dairy. Akaroa...is a small resort town, surrounded by farmland, so it's great to be welcomed, even though you havn't had a chance to change out of your work clothes. Their hours are amazing, currently open (in December 2023) for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the staff are lovely. I've been in a few times just to meet a friend for almond milk coffee. I'm fussy about coffee. It's always been good there. The almond milk has never been split/separated or curdled, over-cooked or bubbly like bubble bath. It's always smooth, a great texture and a pleasure to drink. Overall, Bully Hayes is the most consistantly good place to eat in Akaroa (and yes, I'm a local, so have tried the other places in Akaroa as well).More

The promise: "Spiced kumera (sic) & chickpea patty topped with char grilled Mediterranean vegetables, Portobello mushroom, rough sundried tomato hummus, grilled haloumi (sic) cheese and eggplant relish. Served on char grilled Turkish bread and fresh salad." The reality: A small piece of bread with a...smear of hummus; a small, doughy patty; 1 mushroom, 2 thin slices of tasteless beef tomato, 2 undressed lettuce leaves & 2 thin slices of cucumber, and the most absurdly small piece of halloumi cheese. The vegan option was to remove the halloumi. Add the portion of crinkle cut processed chips, and it was not worth the $27 price tag.More

Great spot to relax with a beer and enjoy the view of the harbour - my tipple of choice was Monteiths Golden Lager which was available on tap - deliciously refreshing after a warm day sight seeing.

My meal was not value for $$. Service was good; you get what you pay for. Shop around. I should’ve gone to The Wharf.
