We booked to dine here prior to our trip to DC and must admit that prior to dining we were apprehensive as to whether we would enjoy it or not and thought about cancelling. We were glad we didn’t as everything about our visit was...excellent. From the initial greeting when you arrived there was an air of elegance and luxury and we were treated to a first class dining experience. The menu is a little limited but my octopus starter was one of the best I have had in a long time and our steaks that followed were cooked to perfection and were followed by amazing desserts, all of which were accompanied by a great bottle of wine. Service was very attentive but not intrusive and any guidance was given as required. Definitely a nice change from the more noisy restaurants we have experienced on this trip and a sense of luxury in nice surroundings that is welcome from time to time. Would definitely recommend and would return to when back in DC in the future.More

From the initial greeting to the final farewell, our experience was outstanding. The menu is limited but covers primary items well. We had the sea bass accompanied by a very delicious Sancerre wine. One side amply serves two, so we had the fingerling potatoes. Service...was superior, attentive but not intrusive. The pianist was accomplished and played music ranging from show tunes to classical, all well played. The ambiance is smooth, quiet, elegant.More

We can only believe that this was an off day for both the serving staff and the kitchen. The restaurant itself is elegant but half empty on the evening we dined. The service was painfully slow and inattentive. The food took for ever to come...out and the vegetables arrived after we had almost finished eating our entrees - and were cold and under cooked! Pretty expensive, and certainly not worth the money.More

Exquisite dining, eclectic atmosphere, superb service! An all around GEM! The staff was very attentive and cordial. The Piano player was superb! The food was prepared perfectly and to taste. The seabass was moist and delicate and the bisque of lobster was complex and rich....My partner's duck dish was delicious as well. chef-d'œuvre!!!More

The service here is exceptional! From the moment we were welcomed to everyone that can to the table. Pedro was attentive, engaging and excellent and n his service. Ernesto was wonderful in his service. Both of them have been tops. There was a piano player...that was also exceptional. We had the salad and lobster bisque - both very good. The veal dinner was tender and flavorful, but had a lot of tendon. The filet was average, but good. The crème brûlée was very good. Our biggest issue was that someone near our table talked/had a meeting on speaker phone for over an hour. The fact that was allowed really detracted from our overall experience. While we tried to focus on the ambience and the music we just kept hearing the entire phone call on speaker. For a restaurant of this caliber we feel someone should have addressed that. But would recommend overall.More

A fantastic all around experience at Lafayette. We arrived a bit early so we had a before dinner drink in the swanky bar downstairs. I had a great martini and my wifes white wine was step up for a bar. Gratis nuts, olives and chips...are a very nice touch. Classy place! To dinner and it was fantastic! Our waiter, Pedro was excellent. Knowledgeable, professional and friendly! We asked for slower pacing to soak in the experience and Jose and company were spot on.i had a great sweet corn soup for an appetizer and it and the accompanying sourdough bread were both great! And my wifes mushroom app was also great. My wife had a fantastic duck entree and my branzino was a substantial and excellent portion. The included sides were also very good. This was our best dining experience this year so far and I doubt that it will be surpassed. One can hope though.More

Went here last night for my boyfriend and I's anniversary. It was a lovely experience. The ambiance accompanied by the live pianist made for a great atmosphere. I usually am a tough critic when eating out, but this place exceeded my expectations. It was very...quiet, not your typical noisy restaurant. The service was amazing everyone was very friendly. The food was perfect! They started us off with a nice thick slice of sourdough bread and very flavorful butter. For dinner, I got the halibut and my boyfriend got the duck breast. Both were cooked to perfection and the fish was extremely fresh. I don't normally write reviews but I had such a great experience. 10/10 recommend.More

Lovely lunch with impeccable service in a gorgeous dining room. I had the special which was seared sea bass with a pistachio pesto and roasted potatoes. It was melt in your mouth good. Husband had roasted octopus and mushroom soup and loved both of them....We got crème brûlée and blood orange dome or dessert. Right across the street from the White House. Would highly recommend it.More

Wonderful dinner in a relaxing environment, as opposed to all the noisy places in WDC. Light piano music with dinner and impeccable service. Overall a great experience.

You are welcomed by a very kind individual and the music, piano leads you to your table by the window. The staff are exceptional and caring, the menu is delightful, I highly recommend the fresh green local salad as a starter presented in a beautiful...porcelain dish. The filet mignon is by far the best I have ever tasted, presented with some lovely mushrooms and carrots. We had sparkling water at the table, three bottles and finished off with fresh berries, the cafe latte was so good, we had two! The management team is extremely professional, and the ambiance is the best in the world. Prior to dinner, we had attended a concert in one of the most, elegant music salon. This experience will live in my heart for years to come, it took 30 years to finally have a chance to experience this magnificent evening. Don't forget to "look" at The White House and the Monument when you leave The Hay Adams. Enjoy your visit to Lafeyette Restaurant at The Hay Adams.More

Overrated and hopelessly overpriced as breakfast place. Nice ambience but terrible food. I haven’t had an omelette this tasteless in a long time.

It's a beautiful room, in 18th/early 19th century style but with modern additions. The tables are reasonably spaced. Staff are great. We had breakfast and one dinner there: food was good.

I went there for breakfast specifically because its intro said "overlooking Lafayette Square". But not really "overlooking" in the sense of birds-eye view of the garden or the White House, only in the sense of "right next to...." I ordered a cappuccino, and the mushroom...omelet with roasted avocado and veg. Quite disappointing actually. The cap was only so-so, with course foam. The half-arvo was not very fresh, a big chunk blackened . Food was plain as well, really cannot tell the fine culinary standard the restaurant claims. I think the most worthy experience would just be the hotel's long heritage, and the attentive service.More

This has always been my favorite old school dining destination in the city, and it remains so. I usually don't like eating in hotel restaurants, but this doesn't feel like a hotel restaurant. Many tables have views of the White House. There is plush carpeting,...white tablecloths, and a piano player playing classic pieces. The menu is simple but classic. Wines are awesome. Kudos for having a large selection of local Virginia wines. Food is excellent. Service was a little slower last time due to covid staff shortages, but it was still excellent. Most people are in suits and ties, nice dresses, etc. It's a very romantic and pleasant restaurant. This is a must-visit for me on every trip to Washington.More
