We were in Georgetown shopping and our son had seen the menu and chosen J Paul's as our restaurant for the evening. The menu was quite extensive and reasonably priced. We had the tacos with chilli to share and it was gorgeous. Our meals were quite large and really nice. The decor is traditional and very appealing. What made the... More

Is it me or is it weird to have a not so bad but not great server actually circle the pre-calculated tip suggestions? I am fully capable of reading and figuring out a tip on my own. However, perhaps she felt that I was unable to. I suppose that I am lucky that she circled the entire set of options... More

They recently launched their new menu, and the dishes are fantastic. Wonderful crab cakes, great drinks, melt in your mouth mac n cheese bites, and don't forget to enjoy the free pretzel bread which is an appetizer in itself!

We went there Aug of 2015 and loved it. Returned Aug 18, 2016 and it was closed due to fire!!!! There was nothing on the door stating they would be opening anytime soon nor did it show a date.

While they have oysters and try to be a nicer restaurant, they still have a dive bar feeling. I recommend to stop by for a drink or a quick bite, but not the restaurant for a date.

The place is always busy, but you can still get a table or spot by the bar with plenty of TVs. Good American fare. I like the quarter pound of cold shrimp for starters. Good portions on menu, but a touch pricey. Good service.

Nice atmosphere, fast and friendly service. Good choice of beers and wines and the food was quite good too. Can recommend it to fellow travelers.

Is this a sports bar that serves food or is this a restaurant that just happens to have too many television screens that all need to make terrible noise? It is now a week ago that we visited J Paul's and I still do not know the answer. In any case, if you want a civilized table conversation accompanied by... More

While this restaurant was recommended by a local, we were somewhat disappointed overall. While the small corn muffins vs basket of bread or rolls were good, the actual food was rather plain. While this could be a function of what we ordered, there seemed to be a somewhat let down feeling when we all left.

Walking down M Street in Georgetown what caught our eye was a window with heaps of oysters and shrimps on display. The building had great character and we went in to check it out. It looked great. We had already eaten so we booked for the following night. We were not disappointed. The menu was very good and we homed... More

J. Paul’s is Washington’s quintessential turn of the century American Dining Saloon. The J. Paul’s bar in Georgetown is itself a 100 year old mahogany shotgun bar, built by the Brunswick Balke Coolander Company and was previously housed in a grand saloon in the Chicago stockyards. Many will swear over their scotch that Al Capone himself bellied up to that very bar. Antique brass elevator doors from New York’s Waldorf Astoria frame the back dining room.

A few short blocks from the Potomac River, in the heart of fashionable Georgetown, the original J. Paul’s has become an institution. Every day, politicians, journalists, artists, business people and Washington personalities share tables with students, tourists and ex-Pats in the nation’s capital. Don't miss out on a visit to this DC institution!
