Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This restaurant was a short two blocks from the Washington Hilton, where I was staying. It was recommended by the concierge. The food and service were amazing! I was seated next to a window and enjoyed watching the people walk by. The iced tea was...herbal, or at least tasted that way. I ordered a lobster dish with tomatoes, onions, a magnificent sauce, and a pound of lobster on top of the pasta which was homemade. Absolutely delicious. They also provided warm homemade bread with and olive/herb dip. I didn't have room for dessert. The waiter was definitely Italian and the site is owned by an Italian. I look forward to returning.More

Had dinner with friends on a Saturday night. The hostess was annoyed that we were 10 minutes early for our reservation but seated us. We ordered from the regular menu. Food was sub par at best and absurdly overpriced. My simple pasta dish with lobster...was over salted and I was still hungry afterward. Table service was ok’ish. Decor was dated and chairs uncomfortable. Pass on this restaurant as I’m sure there is much better Italian in Washington.More

Had a nice dinner at La Tomate. Made a reservation, and table was ready upon our arrival. Seating was a little cramped and restaurant was a bit noisy. Recommend asking for seat in main dining area. We ordered and shared the insalate misti which was...very good. Also ordered the filetto steccato and the spaghetti De gragnano. Both entrees were good, but not fantastic. The bread was rather dry and without flavor. Our server was attentive. Overall 7 out of 10.More

The ambience and service was good. Menu was typical for an up market Italian restaurant in that area of Connecticut Avenue but the food could have been better. More substantial? Better organized? Less focused on presentation? As you can read I’m still trying to work...it out. My lamb chops were perfectly cooked but the surrounding grilled vegetables and onion mixture was messy and didn’t compliment the meat. The one - yes one! - very small fingerling potato on the plate was sliced into three minuscule parts. Really? My friend’s linguine was undercooked - not al dente - but hard however the shrimp were great. The filet steccato didn’t benefit from the pancetta and sage coating but was otherwise well cooked and plentiful. The dessert were good. All in all, we had a ‘nice’ night which is a pity because we had hoped for a great one!More

This is a mediocre restaurant. Despite friendly service and a pleasant space the food is not very good. The lamb chops while perfectly cooked were too salty even for a salt lover. The gelato was bland though the espresso was good. The place clearly has...a loyal neighborhood following but if you crave Italian go elsewhere.More

I recommend getting the endless brunch. It allows for you to taste various dishes. We sampled 5 appetizers, 3 entrees and then you get to sample a final entree based on one that you liked and tasted previously. There was a delicious raspberry sorbet drizzled...with chocolate sauce in a piece of cheesecake that just elevated the meal. We also opted for the champagne package with the orange and passion fruit purées. Brunch was a 10 out of 10.More

We had booked this restaurant in advance for an inside table but were given the option of an outside table, which we took. It is a nice-looking place, with excellent service. They have a decent menu and plenty of wines to choose from. The food...was not bad, but not great either. My starter of arancini was a bit bland. The main course, which we both had, was fish covered in a tomato sauce which we felt was taking away from the fish.More

I had dinner at La Tomate as part of a group, which limited my choices to a few items pre-selected by the person arranging the dinner. Thus, what I ate may not reflect the selections available from the complete menu. The items that I did...order, a calamari appetizer, Swiss chard ravioli in brown butter sauce, and tiramisu, were generally well-eecuted, with portion size about what one might expect, neither notably large nor excessively small. At the same time, there was nothing that made me think "I want to come back here again." Thus, the average rating. The wine list, on the other hand, was somewhat strange, listing the wines only by broad categories, such as "Napa Pinot Noir," with no reference to the name of the producer nor the vintage. Such omissions made it impossible to select a wine with any confidence, although the choice that I finally made was, like the meal, acceptable but not exceptional. The wait staff that I encountered, which may or may not be reflective of those encounteered by others, seemed somewhat impationt, unsmiling, and unwelcoming, which detracted a bit from the overall experience.More

The staff was extremely rude and unwelcoming. The host or person at the host stand wouldn’t look up from her phone when answering my questions. Food can’t compensate for being mistreated.
