we took a night off from the Iowa State Fair and went to Claxon's in Altoona. The greeting was immediate and friendly. We were seated in a great location, but the cooling system blew very cold air on us. Neither the waitress nor the manager could regulate it so they moved us to a more comfortable table. We learned that... More

Great place to go for BBQ but they have a great selection of other foods like burgers, salads, Tenderloins and of course, adult beverages. Atmosphere is relaxed and they have lots of TVs in the bar side of the building to watch sports. Or sit on the other side for bigger groups and booths. We eat here a couple times... More

Having moved from the south I have had a difficult time finding decent BBQ. Was very surprised to find in the small town of Altoona an awesome BBQ restaurant. The BBQ is good, the burnt ends I have had great results with - only a few times were they really burnt and over cooked. Pulled pork and chicken are awesome.... More

Great food and servers. Owner that is community minded. Supporting local schools and families going through medical issues. The BBQ is just right on smoke level. The homemade bbq sauce, just enough kick. Try the appetizers : smoked pepper jack sticks or tabacco rings w jalapeño ketchup. Great specials always. Ribs are amazing, brisket melts in your mouth.

Four of us were in Altoona to donate money to the Polk County school fund (Prairie Meadows). We decided to give Claxton's a try. Overall, it was very good. Mostly "hits' but a few "misses." My wife and I ordered the two meat meal. She got one side. I got two. We both ordered the burnt ends and brisket. We... More

Great smoked meats and sandwiches as well as other choices. Not too expensive and usually can get in and out fairly fast.

Ate early, average service. Fish taco was great, ask for tarter sauce, fried zucchini was delicious! Husband had catfish PoBoy. Creamy coleslaw was above average, beans pretty plain. Good cold Exile brew! Ok environment, outdoor seating available.

Three of us went there for ribs. We all ordered the full rack. They were the best ribs I have ever ate !!! they hung over both sides of the platter, were very tender with a lot of meet. Their beans were great with pieces of meat in them. The onion rings were also some of the best I've had,... More
