The food at the Culinary Institute is quite good (I really loved the corn bread), and it is a really cool spot that is not far from Istiklal, but is far enough away to encourage you to wonder away from the tourist trap restaurants along the main strip. I would encourage you to spend some time exploring these back streets... More

On a recent trip to Turkey, I booked a special cooking class at the Institute,. The Institute is a Chef School so the kitchens and work areas are excellent. There were 8 of us in all and we learned a great deal about Turkish cuisine while having a wonderful time. Chef Karaalp and Ibrahim, the Chef de Parti were knowledgable,... More

Slow service, little food, rude waiter and a terrible experience. If you have time and money to spend for no reason, it might be good alternative

Missed the place. Pity that some places that are wonderful to go to just disappear so fast. Liked the concept, liked the food, liked the place. Some goes for the Ada Cafe on Istiklal, a great place, now replaced by a boring thing you will forget immediately.

I like this place, one of the restaurants i prefer in Taksim area, first of all it's a chef school, they have always something new, exiciting variations in the menu, waiters are pupils of the school, they are not professional waiters, so don't expect excellent service... but they are generally kind and smiling. I'd like to ask their opinion and... More

We had a very nice dinner at the Culinary Institute our first night in Istanbul. It was close to the hotel, and I had seen some good reviews, so we ambled over and had a very enjoyable meal. Very interesting hummus, and some excellent fresh fish. Service was energetic, friendly and helpful.

If you're in the neighbourhood, hungry and thirsty, pop into this cafe/restaurant and fill up. The food is good, nicely presented, tasty and reasonable prices. The place is run by catering students and I am all for supporting them, being one of them from 40 years ago. You want swanky wines, art on a plate, sky high prices and staff... More

This is a very nice place to have dinner in Beyoglu. you can have "meza" like starters or main dishes: meat, fish and vegetables. We had humus (very good), octopus (wonderful) and meat with 2 glasses of wine for 77 lira. A great value for delicious plates. The Service is fast and friendly. There are young people working there in... More

The restaurant location near Marmara Hotel was perfect. The staff was gentle and prepared and gave us good advices to Istanbul nightlife. The food was very good. Try Zucchini Fritters and salad with balck rice and organic chicken. The building and the interior design (industrial style) were realy perfect. Check Ladies toilette for the great matchboxes collection.

Istanbul Culinary Istitute Café - Located very near our Hotel - Marmara Pera. We ate breakfast at the Cafe several mornings during our visit to Istanbul. Food, service, and location were very good. Slightly lost for a scheduled cooking class - they graciously helped us hook up with our group. The Café has a tiny sales area where we bought... More

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighbourhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
