We had heard of it as a "hippy haunt" so were curious to try it out. In the event (having no Turkish) we went into the kitchen and were able to point to the dishes we fancied trying. We could never have ordered them otherwise. Delicious, largely vegetarian cuisine; we left full and happy. Not too expensive, but not dirt... More

I had the Iskender kebab. Tasted quite okay. Still a bit expensive though, I found. And no extraordinary service.

I came here because of the bubbling review in my Istanbul guide (Frommer's). The place has an interesting history but the food is not so interesting, I asked for a Turkish dish with meat and got some sort of chicken stew with potatoes which was pretty bland. It was edible but not out of this world. Also the prices seemed... More

Although we sat at a table with Jordanian visitors, we also had the chance to talk to Turkish diners when we asked people around us what they were eating/what it was like (admittedly mainly through mime). we would recommend it and go there again. Luckily, our local guide was a foodie and always had good recommendations in Turkey.

I have the impression that this place is living on its reputation and catchy name. The re-heated food is average and it is catering for a mass tourist market following out of date guide books. Not many puddings are offered these days It is a very average sort of cafeteria, serving average food and with average level of service. I... More

It has a cafeteria style, but this approach overcomes any language problems. You see what you get! The staff are friendly and helpful. We are vegetarians and we had lots of choice. We had stuffed aubergine and spinach and cheese bake. Both really tasty.

Our lunch was included as part of a day tour but I would have eaten here anyway. The selection of prepared meals was large and the service was very good. I started with the vine leave rolls and the eggplant with meatballs for my main, both were very tasty and seasoned to perfection.

There are 40 years ago, when I have visited pudding shop at Istanbul. My Journey of Asia started from here. Today ,after revisiting the shop,I feel the change of my self between the 40 years, and at the same time I remember which do not change.

The Pudding Shop or Lale Restaurant, is located virtually at the start of the Hippodrome within the Sultanahmet district. Serving buffet style dishes, just point and pick as many meals as you would like. This makes the restaurant a popular, fast and easy food stop for tourists, let alone the location. It is a little more expensive than some of... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
