Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The service at the terrace restaurant was average at best. The food was good but the waiters were not attentive and we waited extremely long for just salads. Our friends waiting for us at the pool said they thought we had left because it took...so long. I asked what they offered to drink and chose lemon, expecting a typical lemon drink available all over Egypt. When I saw the bill, I realized it was a Sprite. I just thought it was a badly made lemon drink and forced it down because I was so thirsty. I ate there a few years ago and thought it was a wonderful experience, which is the only reason I took these friends there. I will not go back.More

Whilst we were on the magnificient Oberoi Zahra we decided to go as a family of 5 (with 3 children) to grab.a drink at the terrace of the hotel to admire the well known sunset. At the entrance gate they requested us to prepay 5x700...EGP as a minimum spend in their facilities. Fair enough we thought and it probably protects the hotel from and undisciplined crowd. This was supposed to include foods and drinks at different lcoations like the lower terrace. When we arrived at the venues, the staff knew exsactly who we were, they told us the only place that was not full was at the bar and immediately took our vouchers. Then one guy suggested that for a tip we could sit on a good seat. He certainly assumed that since we had prepaid 125$, another 10$ was nothing for a good view. But we thought it felt unprofessional and declined so got punished. We were sat in the back. No one came to serve us form 30 mins and we were not allowed to order food. The lower terrace had 10% of the tables occupied but we couldnt access it. Staff was incredibly aggressive. After calling them 3x we were finally able to order mint teas (bags not fresh tea) and the staff then never came back. Impossible to spend the pre purchased plan. This sounded like the worst hotel staff I have seen in the last 10 years so we left after 45 mins. Never set foot back there. Atrocious,More

**Review of terrace drinks only, not accommodation** Very disappointing experience. You pay LE700 per person for a voucher towards your drinks. You are limited to one terrace location or inside bar which is understandable. But service was appalling - severely understaffed, surprising during a peak...time like sunset. We had to constantly go and find servers to take our order and repeatedly chase up where it was. An hour to get a couple of pretty average cocktails. Yes they waived the bill over LE700 but the experience wasn’t worth even that. The table next to us waited over an hour for some sandwiches! Maybe the indoor bar is better staffed - suggest taking some photos outside and trying your luck with service inside.More

I have never been so disappointed by a luxury hotel. The setting is beautiful and the building is impressive and well decorated however this hotel relies solely on its reputation and is all style no substance. We ordered standard drinks at the bar none of...which were good. All were too sweet, the signature cocktail was essentially a glass of Prosecco, the bartender clearly is not trained. This would have been fine had we not paid 50US$ per cocktail which were average at best. The restaurant unfortunately was no better, we waited ages for food, the ambience was just ok, I would not class the food as fine dining although they price as if it were. The staff of the hotel are all lovely and welcoming, but the clearly they are being let down by the chefs and the bartending. Overall did not live up to expectations and was just incredibly disappointed.More

It was my daughter-in-law’s birthday and the restaurant went out of their way to make it special for a visiting American family, and especially her. They provided a birthday cake and special music. Very lovely experience.

We had a business meeting and afterwards we decided to see the old cataract hotel and have dessert there. The hotel is majestic, royal and well maintained, you can feel the beauty and elegance all around. The terrace where we sat, has an amazing view,...service was great.More

We made a booking for High Tea at the Old Cataract hotel.I am 65 years old and i can honestly say it was the worst afternoon tea i have ever experienced and i have had a few.The very small cut sandwiches looked like they had...been left out in the sun, and the cakes were truly pityful. We had 1 small pot of tea between 6 of us and trying to get another was impossible. The service was appalling. In a hotel of this calibre you are normally greeted warmly and offered a place where to sit. There was nothing of the kind, just staff were walking around not knowing what to do.80 dollars for 2 people for High Tea is a little over top especially as this is probably a months wages for the staff. A really terrible experience..I think this hotel is living on its old image, sadly that has all disappeared.More

Gorgeous setting. Impeccable friendly service. Good food nicely presented. Not staying at the hotel so we were invited to eat in the Terrace. Very pleasant.such a relief from the exhausting hot streets of Aswan. But a heads up- $40 for one Gordon’s gin and tonic!...( but as the server pointed out , “…the tonic is free, madame” 😁More

We recently stayed at the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan, a beautiful, historic property on the banks of the Nile. After a morning of touring historical sites in the area, we returned to the hotel in early afternoon, and decided to try the High Tea...offered at the Terrace Restaurant. We were each served a carafe of tea, and a tall three-tiered serving dish was placed between us. The top tier was full of finger sandwiches, the middle with small cakes, tarts, and other desserts. The bottom tier had an assortment of fresh fruits, in total more than enough for a tasty late lunch. The tea was good, the food provided was delicious, and the the views of the Nile were amazing. It would be hard to imagine a more relaxing and satisfying way to spend an hour on a sunny afternoon in Aswan (or almost anywhere, for that matter!).More

The food was good but their survice was like mc Donald's beacuse they forgot 1 of our tea pots. Also at the entrance it has some pretty extreme fashion from the old times. They don't give kids like 9 years old menus and tea cups....They weren't that mean to us.More

Caught a taxi to the hotel from our Nile Cruise to have afternoon tea. Upon arrival at hotel you walk through beautiful gardens and obtain from the right hand side reception a Token for Egypt pounds 500 to put towards whatever you drink or eat....Hotel inside is stunning. We shared a lighy afternoon tea, which is taken overlooking the Nile. I have had afternoon tea all over the world in beautiful hotels, but this was so disappointing. Finger sandwiches dry and inedible, one small scone served with a small jar of honey! We actually left more than we ate. My suggestion just go for a drink and admire the beautiful view. Also do not order a Margarita, tasteless no salt around the rim. I thought this was a 5 star hotel. They really need to up their game.More

My wife and I had dinner here while we were staying at the hotel. The food was good, not great. Service was poor. We had burgers with fries and split an Egyptian beef pie as an appetizer. The burger was decent but very sloppy. It...comes with a Big Mac-like sauce that I didn’t like. Fries were too soft but the appetizer was very good. Complimentary bread was below average - pretty dry and flavorless. Service was largely nonexistent. No one ever checks on you once you order. Empty beer bottles were never cleared. One beer was warm. They brought out the appetizer simultaneously with the other food. Your only chance for ordering a second drink is when they bring your food out. Not recommended.More

See above really. 40 minutes to deliver a bottle of water is a bit poor. Menu is a bizarre mishmash of "international" dishes generally delivered with a take it or leave it attitude. Eat at Kebabgy instead.

We stayed at the Old cataract Hotel last week. High tea is served throughout the afternoon. We did not pre-book but it would be wise to as it can be busy if a large group arrives
