You definitely have to give this place a go on a visit to Nairobi. How it works, is on your table there is a little flag, they bring you food until your full and put down your flag. There is so many nice things to try, the food was barbecued and bought over on a large skewer and carved in front of you.where things like chicken wings, ostrich meatballs, roast lamb, beef ribs, pork, and Ox testicles (Bulls Balls) which to me wasn’t very tasty, but that’s obviously an acquired taste. And where else would I try something so unique?
It was only $40 USD per person for all you can eat, drinks just cost extra. This place also makes the best “Dawa” cocktails ever! Highly recommended!

The clue is in the name of course. I was impressed with the hospitality - from the security guards on arrival through to the host and waiting staff, all very polite and attentive. I asked for the speaker behind me to be turned down as it was blaring in my ear, and they responded immediately. The concept is lots of meat, small salads, potatoes & sauces, and it keeps coming until you say no, all for a set price. Meat is varied - croccodile, ostrich, sausages, roast meats. There wasnt any gravy so the meat was dry, and potatoes were offered only once, which I had only taken a little & could of done with a few more to accompany later meat. Soup & Dessert are included, soft drinks are fairly priced. It was an enjoyable overall experience. Around £30pp excluding drinks.

The restaurant is nice and pleasant but the food could be much better.
If you compare to the same concepts you can find in Brazil for example, the quality is much lower.
But it is not acceptable that the waiters do not take care of your belongings when serving the meat. Which means that your shirt will be stained on all sides when you leave the restaurant....
But the staff is very friendly.

An announced deception just confirmed by a dinner absolutely not worth of the money we spent. 180€ for 4 people, meat of various animals (amongst them only the crocodile is the “exotic” one, the rest one can find it anywhere and far cheaper) served at the speed of the light. Desserts of low quality, cocktails super expensive for a city like Nairobi. The unfair trick in which we all fall: the smile of the waiters who come offering their buffet and never show a menu with prices. Never again.

Considering that it's in Kenya, the setting is acceptable. The waiters have colorful costumes. Their staff is very friendly, always smiling and attentive to customer needs. We expected more, but we liked to try game meats anyway. The crocodile meat was undercooked, it seemed to have been reheated and was a bit dry -two points less for the men in charge of the grill-. The wine helped to improve the experience. The times were quite long. Considering that there were not many people to attend at noon on a weekday, there were no excuses to justify the delay. Don't expect too much styling, it's more a barbecue than a gourmet restaurant. Anyway, the presentation was adequate. For Kenyan prices this restaurant is undoubtedly very expensive although, from an international perspective, the price is appropriate for the service they offer. We would suggest improving the atmosphere with tribal ethnic music and taking gastronomy to another level by offering the diner an alternative to choose gourmet dishes, in addition to the basic grill options. As for the uniforms ... or zebra, or leopard, different uniforms with alternative animal print can be developed but not mix everything because the result is not good. In any case, the sympathy of the staff remedies this detail.

On reaching the restaurant, we were seated and advised to go in for the set piece menu (KES 36,000 + taxes). When we asked for the À la carte option, we were asked to move away to another part of the restaurant.
We ordered a garden salad, the half kilo meat platter and drinks.
It was fortunate we avoided the set piece menu since what was served in the half kilo platter was inedible and rubbery meat. The garden salad was good but the cafe mocha was again terrible.
All in all, a horrible experience and we cannot understand how some people have given this restaurant good reviews.

Sorry the restaurant did not meet with your expectations but you obviously ate in the adjoining a la carte restaurant and the reviews on this page are for the Main roving bbq. Your comment about the price is completely erroneous. The price for a full set menu in the main restaurant is only KSH 3,600 incl taxes) and the prices are similar to other comparable business in the area. Kind regards Geraldine

A Kenyan restaurant which is similar to a Brazilian steakhouse. There wasn't any outrageous meats with Ostrich and Crocodile being the most exotic. This restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and is great for a fun time out. The portions are massive so bring a huge appetite. There was some confusion with our bill as we were double charged, the restaurant handled it quickly and offered to hand me the difference directly to my hotel room.

I've been to carnivore in South Africa and always wondered what the experience is like where it originated from...I was not disappointed! Enjoyed the food even more there
The waiters were very attentive and explained all the details with the presentation of every type of meat.
Dessert was not the best so it skip that.
Overall experience and ambience was awesome

I was expecting to try exotic meat. There were crocodile and ostrich meat. You can not worry about wild animals, ostrich and crocodile were bred on special farms. Meat was tasty.
Also keep in mind that despite the fact that staff usually suggests buffet meal for 40$, if you're not a big eater you can buy dishes a la cart and that will be cheaper. On the other hand staff transfers you to the other corner of the restaurant if you buy a la cart. We have an unpleasant experience of being transfered to the farthest hall cause we decided to buy dishes a la cart.

My fourth visit to Carnovore, but it wasn't up to expectations, I found the food quality has gone down and the choice of meats are no more exquisite as before. Your filled with the regular beef, Chicken and regulars first and the choicy meats come in after you are full. Service has also gone down, maybe because we are not from Europe.

Great place for dinner. We came here on a Sunday just before dinner service started. No worries, we visited the playground on the other side and watched the wharthogs until they opened. We tried all the meats and used the sauces as suggested. The service was very good, friendly and entertaining. The man serving the ox was particularly proud of the meats and rather funny. I appreciated the mobile dawa cart as well. We enjoyed our dinner and the flat fee for the meals was very reasonable.

My husband and I while in Nairobi decided to have dinner at carnivore. We made a reservation and were seated near the front of the restaurant in the buffet area. After a few minutes a non black family of four arrived and were seated in the rear of the buffet area. The meat carver walked past us to serve them first and most times we were not offered meat despite our flag being raised. The waiter noticed this and served us meat from a plate but we had to ask for certain cuts of meat rather than being offered a variety of meats. The meat carver continued to walk past us to serve the nonwhite family. In addition the meat was dry and did not taste like freshly prepared meat it was more like day old meat. I believe carnivore should treat all of its customers equally despite race creed or color. I also believe carnivore should prepare and serve fresh meat daily. I will not be returning we paid a total of 87 dollars doe poor service and dry meat. Thanks carnivore for a bad experience.

Went to Carnivore with family and friends. I thought that the "surrender" flags were gimmicks until I could not possibly eat any more. The portions are generous and the waiters accommodating to personal preferences with regard to the kinds of meat individuals in each table like.
Warning; don't fill up on the pastry/soup at the beginning. Also, pace yourself; eat slowly..

I enjoyed the crocodile meat and the ostrich meat. Great, efficient service and ambience. In order to get value for money, I found it useful to avoid the normal meat dishes one eats like chicken and beef and concentrate on the exotic dishes. It is quite expensive though. When I went it was KES3,500 per person, which I found quite pricey.

Carnivore restaurant is quite well-known internationally and I am sure there are many visitors to Nairobi who like me make it a point to go to it at least once. And it really is an experience one should have! Spacious, great ambiance, gregarious and courteous staff, and of course great food if you are into meat and like barbeque. Some people still think it serves game meat (antelope, etc.) but this was stopped several years ago by law. So you get chicken, mutton, beef and pork (perhaps BBQ fish also?), and the only ‘wild’ meat you get is crocodile and ostrich, that too from farms. I was told by someone that perhaps soon game meat, also from farms and not from the wild, may be allowed again. But I am not sure about it. I recommend a dining experience at Carnivore (dinnertime I think is better to opt for than lunchtime) while in Nairobi, especially if you are in a group. There is also live music on some nights.
