We ate the Fried Vermicelli and Fried Kway Teow, and it's among the best we've had in Singapore. In particular, the Vermicelli was a meld of local Flavours, derived from a good stock base.

I have been going to yong Huat for more than 20 years and the Husband and Wife couple are still the same nice people who have their regular fond customers, they have had their stall in practically the same Kopitiam at the junction of East Coast / Joo Chiat for years they have not changed one bit though the name... Located across the road from I12 Katong, this cafe, more like a coffee shop, offers nice Hokkien Mee and Chay Keow Teow. It has cockles and fried pork fat (猪油炸)making it very fragrant. It also serves an interesting array of mocktails. We had pineapple spritzer and Green monster. Price wise reasonable for what is given, $4-$5 for a plate of... More

With my Dad being one of fourteen children originating in Singapore, I find myself journeying back frequently to catch up with relatives and experience the food paradise that is Singapore. On this trip back, it was a mission of mine and my girlfriend's to knuckle down and find some good examples of the much loved dish Char Kway Teow because... More

The S$5 plate portion of fried Hokkien Noodles was vale for money. It bring back the good old time of hawker food that is rare to find in Singapore nowadays.

Ordered the stir fried Hokkien Noodles. It was not tasty enough and I don't know if it is because of the stock which was used was not flavorful enough. One positively surprising thing was that they gave lots of fried pork lard which is really a signature of the dish which many other shops no longer provide. I will eat... More

This stall is tucked in a corner hawker coffee shop called AlibaBar. This stall sells local food like hokkien mee, minced pork noodles. They only operate in the day time.Pricing is reasonable. The couple has been around since the 80s. There are many hotels and hostels in the joo chiat area. I strongly urged all tourists to try this instead... More

Staying in Joo Chiat

Neighbourhood Profile
Joo Chiat
The Joo Chiat area is the traditional home of Peranakan culture in Singapore, an ethnic group descending from the blending of Chinese and Malay families in the 15th century. The neighbourhood is packed with colourful shops, local characters, and quiet charm. The main streets overflow with diners enjoying katong laksa, the signature Peranakan spicy noodle soup. Signs of youthful entrepreneurship are visible as well, with modern cafes, bars, and shops abounding. Visit Joo Chiat to take a break from the big city sights and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with a laid-back and local vibe.
