Our love of afternoon teas in various hotels around the world was subdued somewhat after our visit here. While the tea and the service was sans pareil, the scones were "toasted" and the ensuing bill put an end to any ideas of continuing our shopping for the day. A nice experience in a high standard establishment with superb ablutions that... More

Amangalla is lovely, beautifully decorated in an understated colonial style. We stayed at The Owl and the Pussycat with friends close-by but went for lunch to Amangalla. The service was a bit confused but charming, the simple food was very fresh and delicious. Unfortunately sitting outdoors was a nightmare due to the fume and noise from various large buses parked... Located in the Galle Fort overlooking the harbour, this hotel was once the residence of the Dutch Governor, then a barracks for British troops, then one of the finest hotels in Asia known as the New Oriental Hotel and the favourite stopping place of the British Raj. For many year this hotel was run down. Recently revives and refurbished it... More

We called in the morning for an afternoon lunch reservation and were told they were fully booked. Decided to stop by around 12:30 p.m. to visit the building and see if a table opened up. It was completely empty except for 1 table of 2 women. We figured we lucked out and happily ordered lunch. It took 1.5 hours for... More

We visited Amangalla for high tea on our first day in Galle. Although we were not staying at the property, we were able to walk right in and get a table on the veranda (at about 4pm). Opted for the silver (?) tea, which was around 8,000 rupees. The platters were very large - I would recommend sharing one platter... More

We had afternoon tea here. We were not impressed. 1. We booked a table for afternoon tea in the morning. When we turned up they had no record of our booking 2. The seats for afternoon tea was inappropriate were not fit for purpose. They are too low: more for lounging than having tea. The table was too small for... More

We have eaten here on several occasions and enjoy the colonial atmosphere of this grand hotel which is steeped in history as it dates from the 17th century. It is expensive but worth it for a taste of luxury in this fascinating old Fort area. The tiles and wooden furniture add to the authenticity and elegance. The lunch menu includes... More

Lovely old building with very clean wash rooms. We went there for lunch, the rice and curry was good with lots of different curries, but not the fish and chips was tasteless. Overall too expensive .

This is a nice place and the staff are very nice too, but given the prices, you could not expect less!
