We have just had an amazing personalised dining experience at this wonderful family owned restaurant. We learned that the owner and her husband support the locals who work to source some of the food products which was refreshing to hear. May the owner was so...lovely. She explained the menu to us in detail which encourage us as a family order some Northern Thai dishes. She also spoke really good English and we felt we could make the right food choices based on her advice and suggestions. The food was beautifully presented with some very personalised aromas and taste. Something very different to what we have had so far in Thailand. We would highly recommend this restaurant and are attaching some photos of our food this evening. Thank you May for being a wonderful host and we would definitely DEFINITELY recommend this place to others. Tip: don’t be put off by the size of the place and perhaps book in advance as it was quite busy when we were went. We were lucky to get a table!More

Barrab was close to our accommodation Baan Jaru and we passed it several times in our excursions. We had also had it recommended to us several times, so decided to try it on our last day in Chiang Rai. The owner/manager met us at the...door and we noted her pleasant manner and the fact that she spoke English. She brought us the large colourful menu and although it had many dishes for choice (not usually the sign of a good restaurant), she explained the style of her restaurant dishes and the spiciness. We ordered several dishes including the Northern Thai sausages, five rices, sticky rice, prawns, morning glory and chicken satay Barrab style (not spicy). All the dishes are coded according to Barrab speciality, spiciness, peanuts, vegan etc giving patrons a clear understanding of what they ordered according to their tastes and requirements. We also ordered the lemon honey drink - sweet but refreshing. The manager advised that the dishes were all cooked to order and there would be a short wait. We noted that several patrons had been to the restaurant before and she remembered and greeted them accordingly. The dishes arrived within a short time and we were surprised that they were so well presented, in fact artistically. Note that having ordered several dishes, the space on the small tables become difficult. Nonetheless, we enjoyed every one of the dishes and the prawn dish was the best prawn dish I have had in Thailand. The morning glory also contained slices of Okra and young okra shoots (not my favourite) but nevertheless was very tasty. The chicken dish was not the normal satay but it was very tasty with peanut sauce and so well presented with flowers pineapple, and lovely cucumber and onion salad in a sweet, hot sauce. The Northern Thai sausage did not have a large amount of kafir lime leaves which you would normally have to spit out, so it was very nice. Very tasty and well presented. Had we been staying longer or had decided to dine here earlier, we would have dined here more often. The prices are higher than you would find in street food or small hole in the wall restaurants but worth it.More

Food is overpriced , paid 180 for a meal when I ordered the 70 baht version and definitely wasn't enough for one person. Same stuff happened to the table next to us. Service almost kicked us out when we tried to order something else in...order to free the table for the people waiting I would not recommend this place , clearly suffered from his good reputation and doesn't deserve the top 10 spot in chiangraiMore

A small, busy restaurant which serves delicious local food. We tried some taster dishes which were small. Food was good and so was the service. Be warned, it does get full quickly, so either go early or be prepared to wait.

Arrived to a full restaurant ,all foreigners ,and waited a short while for a table .The owner was helpful and explained the menu that seemed more complicated than needed ,all was well ,then the food arrived . The presentation was very fussy and the taste...unlike normal Thai food ,certainly in sufficiently spicy even though we had ordered Thai style spicing ,worst of all the food which is wok based tasted stewed rather than flash fried as is normal. I can only conclude that the the rave reviews for this restaurant are essentially newcomers whether tourist or otherwise who do not appreciate the real authentic cuisine of ThailandMore

Another premises slowly getting back to normal after covid and successfully so, though customers are still restricted to the G/F with 1/2 -a-dozen or so tables. The restaurant is quite centrally located in the tourist area, a short walk from the Clock Tower, and air-conditioned....After more than 4 hours walking in very hot weather, the air-conditioning was welcome. We (3 adults) visited twice for lunch and it was full/nearly full on both occasions. This is northern food and the recipes can vary slightly from the ‘normal’ dishes served in Bangkok – same, same but different and, for example, the tom yum gung includes a little coconut milk. But nearly all the varied dishes we tried were delicious and whilst the prices were a little higher, it was well worth it – the pad thai was the richest version I have ever had after many visits to Thailand and it takes many hours cooking to prepare the hung lay curry. Be aware that seafood can cost considerably more in Chiang Rai. The chef is a professional chef and his partner deals with the customers; she is quite energetic, commanding and helpful and if you want advice on where to buy locally made curry spices etc she will tell you and we made a successful shopping trip to the shop near the Clock Tower. The only weak point on the menu was the dry kow soi which I did not feel was anything like the same high quality as the other dishes. But do not let one dish put you off, this restaurant is definitely above average, you are going to enjoy a very nice meal here and the quality, originality and variety is just not available at the night market (no disrespect to the night market which can provide basic but tasty dishes at a low price and where I eat regularly). If we visit Chiang Rai again, we will return here for another satisfying experience and hopefully they will have been able to open the 1/F again.More

We googled the best Hunglay Curry near me and thankfully found Barrab Restaurant. Everything was wonderful, from the friendly greeting as we walked in the door, to having the menu explained to us and then eating the food. We had the Pork Hunglay Curry and...the Chicken Curry with Nan. Both were amazing, such great flavour. Our only disappointment is we leave Chiang Rai tomorrow after been here for 4 days and we won’t get to eat here again.More

This was our favourite restaurant in Chiang Rai town. We loved the food so much we ate in once and ordered take away another three times. The owners are lovely, and they have a great understanding of the regional cuisine they are presenting, and how...to make it assessable to people with dietary requirements such as gluten free. Great food, lovely people, reasonable prices, what more could you want!More

This is a wonderful little restaurant. Front-of-house is a delightfully welcoming Thai-Australian woman who is most helpful and will explain the menu. The food is perfect, beautifully presented and fresh. Highly recommended.

We happened across this gem and kept on coming back, tiny, unassuming however delivered the goods with a punch. The hostess was amazing, enquired re allergies, spicy preferences and offered suggestions. Kao Soi came traditionally with chicken on the bone or with breast...delicious. Their take on Satay only let...down by the ordinary bread roll ( although warmed, would've been fabulous with steamed buns!!?!) The Lana Pork lucky bags were superb. And the chicken wings super tasty. Not enough days to sample the many delicacies and the prices were extremely reasonable. Fabulous food, service and prices...More
