We were introduced to Salsa by friends who had dined at Salsa over the years but had not been back since its return to Penang Road in Georgetown. We were not disappointed. The menu catered for all tastes and price points. The service was excellent despite there being a large group and most tables being occupied. Our food was very tasty and served in a timely manner. To make sure this was not a one off, we returned a couple of weeks later with other friends and again were very happy with all aspects of the meal. Subsequently suggested the place to friends who went for lunch and all reported back that they had enjoyed very well priced set menu with excellent service. I would highly recommend Salsa as a venue for an intimate dinner an outing with friends.

Chef David prepared a sumptuous western style Omakase. We left it to the chef to surprise us and we were all overwhelmed. From salad, fish cakes, grilled oysters, tiger prawns, tenderloin to alio olio.

AN old favourite of ours from the late 2000s, we decided to go back with our youngest family member. Seems that time stood still: Similar friendly greeting at the door, hushed conversation among the mostly senior mostly other 'European' diners, checkered tablecloth. A comfortable, homely atmosphere from home - wherever that is in the 'West - prior to this era firmly in the Great Replacement period. This is the place to order set menus. Salmon is also a winner. All cooked very much the European read British way: Mint sauce with Lamb Cutlets kind of thing. I don't remember if I saw Steak Diane or Chicken Kiev (should that by Kyiv?) or not. Regardless, I docked this place a star because it really isn't cheap by Penang mid-level standards. RM 220 for three including 2 draught beers.

walking into this place was a little odd - it wasn't quite what I had expected. Had to move to the back of the restaurant due to the front of house staff talking very loudly with a couple of women with a dog and one of them smoking at the table (now illegal in Malaysia). The food was a different story - a tenderloin steak cooked perfectly for just RM60 incredible value for money. So Salsa's you win on the food front but your staff creates a poor experience for the diner by being unaware that the whole street can hear them. It is also now compulsory for all businesses in Malaysia to have available the government app so people can record entry - you didn't have it and the guy at the entrance said "the government need to have black and white" .......total rubbish. Please adhere to the SOP's as laid down by MOH

Comfortable, nice people, nice food and reasonable price. Very clean too. Made me feel like home, especially the young girl working there, her name is Virla, she was very nice, and we chatted little bit.

My friends and I love Owner/Chef David's rustic unpretentious cooking. Everything is excellent and great value. His signature dressings and sauces are so yummy. The new layout is cosy and intimate. Best to make reservations as tables are limited.

Across the road they were doing two for one but here the drinks were exactly half price and better. They also had a really talented live duo playing bob marely and similar songs. Good vibe!

They are now in the Continental Hotel at 5 Penang Road near its junction with Lebuh Farquar. Google Maps still shows it at its 86 Love Ln. location 6 years ago. Great food and Felicia's band is cool for live music.

A good place to wind down and relax. Ask for what’s fresh and good, and you’ll never get it wrong. Good service. Order a bottle red wine or bring your own.

One thing you will notice in the scrumptious delights served as Salsas Penang is that the dishes have outstanding quality, mainly due to the freshest ingredients used and David Kaw, the man who knows how to prepare them beautifully. I gave David a budget and he worked out an impressive 6-course menu. We started the evening with a refreshing salad. Crunchy rocket and romaine lettuce leaves, Japanese cucumber and radish slices, roma tomatoes and raisins were tossed with a balsamic vinaigrette. The salad was topped with some toasted almond slices. The sweet and juicy tomatoes balanced the flavours of the salad well. Next was a trio of seafood offerings – a plump buttered oyster, char-grilled octopus slices with a capsicum salsa and a breaded homemade fish cake. The large Japanese oyster was deshelled and buttered gently, preserving its soft, rich creamy content. Topped with black caviar, this was a combination made in heaven. How you might ask, did David tenderise the octopus? Well, it was at least a 3-hour job for David before he smoked it with hickory chips, then grilling it in a flash over strong flames. So much tender loving care had been given in preparing this delicious offering. On the platter was also a homemade golden fish cake topped with aioli and a dill sprig. The seafood platter was indeed a sublime mix of flavours, textures and aromas that only a well-trained chef can put together. The seafood parade continued with a showstopper dish – a grilled giant river prawn from Thailand. David grilled it with lemon butter and some herbs. The firm, white flesh of the freshwater prawn had a delicate sweet flavour, close to that of a lobster. The real treasure was within the head – the orangey yellow blob of butter-looking cream was what eating the prawn was all about! The rich, umami flavour was out of this world. The fourth course was a generous portion of seared halibut, topping some cauliflower gratin and drizzled over with dill oil. Its lean white and flaky flesh had a subtly sweet taste (of crab or clam). David cooked it perfectly – the skin was crispy and the succulent flesh melted in every mouthful. Simply scrumptious! Next to arrive at the table was a serving of warm, comforting mushroom soup, drizzled with truffle oil. It was lighter, velvety smooth and aromatic. Using only porcini mushrooms, the colour of the soup was a lovely shade of apricot orange. By the sixth and final course, most of us were stuffed to the gills. Having said that, I somehow mysteriously managed to tug in a combo of lamb rack and chicken roulade with a creamy spinach conchiglioni on the side. The tender lamb rack was flavoured with rosemary while the chicken roulade was stuffed with a tarragon herb mix. It was a potpourri of scents that really brought to light David's sensitivity to preparing fine cuisine. The vibrant pub vibe and eclectic decor of Salsas are welcoming. The service was excellent and my friends and I could let our hair down, enjoying a rambunctious evening of merrymaking and cheer. On TripAdvisor, Salsas ranked No. 2 out of 935 restaurants in Penang (on 6 February 2022). Incidentally, Treffpunkt that ranked No. 1 on TripAdvisor out of 935 restaurants in Penang was also owned by David. Due to the pandemic situation, David decided to close Treffpunkt and focus his attention on Salsas. I would highly recommend Salsas to anyone who appreciates good food. If you want to try something else beside tapas and pub grub from the standard menu, give David a budget and you might be in for a surprising treat.

We stepped in here due to the amazingly high TripAdvisor ratings and because we wanted some Mexican food. We were surprised to find just one clear item on the menu that was clearly Mexican (quesadillas). Gladly they had a good selection for my gluten-sensitive wife, and my spaghetti with shrimp was quite tasty. A good restaurant. But it seemed that to list this as the #1 restaurant in Penang is to hugely over-rate it. Perhaps their menu will become quite a bit broader after the COVID crisis, but currently there's not many choices.
