We had a lot of cheaper yakitori in Japan but it's fun to try the upscale version. This place is excellent. Chicken tail was the perfect combination of fatty and juicy and the duck meatball was one of the best things we ate on the entire trip - we drank the leftover balsamic reduction with bits of meat. Some have... More

Having read positive reviews about this place, we decided to hop in for lunch. To our dismay, they only offered two lunch set options, with nary a stick of yakitori in sight. Their oyakodon was served in a stone bowl and was tasty enough, even if the rice was rather mushy. Not especially recommended as a lunch option!

If you like gourmet Yakitori this place is a must! The plates are small, but they are worth it. The staff are extremely friendly and amazing service. Try the liver pate and the noodles.

We had to have a look at this place due to the large number of positive reviews on Trip Advisor. The food is quite nice, the staff were excellent and the ambiance was fantastic. In my opinion the food was over priced for what it is. Bookings here are preferred.

Our dinner at Wabiya Korekido was incredible. Located in the refurbished area of the Gion district you feel like your back in feudal Kyoto. The restaurant looks like an old izakaya from the outside but the interior is a modern take on a traditional Japanese izakaya. We had the autum kiseki meal which was delicious. This isn't a place to... More

Definitely one of my fave places to go in Kyoto! This was my second visit and it was amazing. Note they do have an english menu. Must orders: Duck balls in egg, deep fried chicken, the chicken stick where they give you two types of chicken - one from near Kyoto and another from Nagano (up north), soba noodles, creamy... More

Great service, great food, elevating chicken unlike anything i've seen before ... had the set course menu. I recommend the duck meatballs, chicken liver, chicken heart and the dessert was divine.

I dared to try parts of a chicken that I haven't tried before and I was surprised by the quality. Simple yet rare and special flavors. Service was great, chefs all look like they love their chickens and the duck meat balls to die for.

We came upon this restaurant by chance and sat down for the full course (20 skewers) of fried delights starting with prawn, working through everything from chicken, beef, mushroom, mushed peas, duck to lotus root and finished with apple. The chef who prepared our meal was an absolute gem. We shamefully spoke virtually no Japanese and he was able to... More

This place was recommended by our hotel. Would probably be best to make a reservation, but we made one day of no problem. They have counter seating and table seating and cook in front of the counter. Many of the other diners got a set menu with many dishes that were not on the menu and not the traditional grilled... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
