We went to this small lovely place for lunch when the menu is still affordable. The atmosphere is magic and you feel to live an authentic japanese lunch. The tempura was delicate and so far the best ever tried with a payless opportunity to closely obseve the tempura cooking art. Go for lunch and you won't be disappointed

The concierge at the Hyatt arranged this for us, and it was a lovely last evening in Kyoto. Entering the restaurant, you leave the city behind and travel to the calm atmosphere of another era. The counter seats just 10 people. The tempura is as light and crisp as any, the fish and vegetables seasonal and perfect. The chef will... More

I love tempura and this is the best tempura I have had. This restaurant can be very expensive but does a lunch at the counter which is very reasonable - a set is either 3000 or 4000 yen. We were a family of 6 and wanted a very Japanese eating experience and this place was perfect. Beautiful building great hospitality... More

A high-end tempura restaurant in a traditional ryokan. They have about 10 seats at the counter, and some private tatami rooms. I had dinner at the counter, and chose the slightly more expensive option of the set course menu. I was served about 15 dishes, which were all excellently prepared and very good. The chef and hostess also gave some... More

This Inn has been serving customers since the 1600s. The appointments are exquisite and the staff attentive. The food is top notch. The bathroom is a joy and the important thing to remember is to take your time to stay, bathe and eat at leisure. Their hospitality is special and an experience not to be missed.

This is a great way to experience tempera made right in front of you. We came here for lunch and it was a great experience! The price was reasonable for a nicer place - about $30 usd for the cheaper set meal and $40 for the nicer set meal. Everything was delicious here and great service as well!

We had lunch here. We arranged a time and came back an hour later. We waited in the Ryokan waiting area for 10 minutes until our seats were ready. This is a truly charming place. The restaurant is tiny, 10 guests. Everyone gets to sit close to the chef. He is great. A master of Tempura and very attentive. We... More

If you are not a fan of Japanese food, eat first and ask questions afterwards. Your mouth will thank you for experiencing something new. And get the chef involved, he can be a delight.

Step back in time to experience the quiet sophisticated inn. Everything is meticulous, graceful and slow. We visited as a large group and arranged the private dinning room overlooking the 400 year old garden. It was a wonderful evening.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
