Best warabi mochi ever tried. Hojicha ice-cream is surprisingly good too. Matcha ice-cream, castella are all good but expected. Matcha pudding is worst among all sweets.

As you know, there are many shops, restaurants and cafes near Yasaka Shrine and Gion. Among them, this may be a representative cafe. Therefore, this cafe is crowded with tourists everyday. Especially on holiday afternoon, perhaps you may be forced to wait for a long time to use the cafe! If you'd like to eat desserts at this... More

Bustling but organized. We arrived mid afternoon and decided to wait even though there is a 12 people line along the stairwell. We were glad that we waited the 15 minutes. The cold green tea soba and dessert combo was perfect and delicious. My husband who likes neither dessert nor wait consented to wait in a even longer line the... More

Love this place. Some of the best parfaits in town. I always persuade my companion to get the Castella matcha parfait whilst I order a smaller variety or red bean soup with danko (mochi balls) or grilled mochi. The parfaits are huge so you'll want to go hungry. Expect long long queue on weekends and public holidays. We've had to... More

I only tried one of their desserts...it was amazing! Wish I can have it everyday! One of the best matcha desserts I tried in Kyoto.

Tsujiri is one of the well known matcha tea houses in Kyoto. I bought a piece of matcha cake and some matcha latte tea powder. Recommended.

A must visit for matcha lovers. The iced matcha drink was the perfect thirst quencher on a scorchingly hot and humid day. It had the right balance of bitterness and sweetness and a nice grassy flavour. It was also not too sweet. There will be a line, but the wait is worth it. Venturing inside, you will see various matcha... More

Walking in here is like entering Matcha heaven. We wanted to get a quick grab and go snack and notice at the entrance different Matcha options. The soft serve was already sold out but thankfully we opted to get the Matcha Mochi.

I'd read a lot about Tsujiri before heading to Kyoto and how it was one of the most famous dessert shops in Gion, so I was determined to visit and taste the matcha soft serve it's famous for. Because we went in the evening, it was less crowded and we managed to get a seat upstairs. I had the matcha... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
