I was having a bad hormonal day, plus my baby was cranky for being tired of travelling, but my husband was smart enough to bring us to this place. It was never in our plan for the trip this time but I'm glad we decided to stop by after tired of walking around Gion/Kawaramachi. This place is so smart that... More

As I am interested in Koi and Goldfish I researched places to see them in Kyoto. My research using Diane Durston's book Old Kyoto uncovered the Rakusho Tea House that had a garden attached which included a Koi pond which housed high quality Koi. The Rakusho is situated close to the Kiyomizu-Debra Temple and lies just south of Maruyama Park.... More

I decided to revisit this place on my second trip to kyoto and it was as delightful as I remembered it. Well worth a visit if you need to have a relaxing quiet few minutes to yourself whilst enjoying a drink and bite to eat.

I visited this quaint little tea house in Kyoto in October 2016. The Garden is lovely with a Koi Pond. We sat on the floor and were served tea. My daughter had a chocolate sundae and I had the green tea sundae. I photographer was taking pictures of a young girl dressed up like a Geisha which was perfect for... More

This little place was next door to our ryokan and we decided on our last day to give it a try. When we arrived, most people in the place are local Japanese. We got their famous ice cream with black sugar and red bean, it was delicious! Certainly a nice place to chill and relax after visiting the hectic tourist... More

Rakusho is a charming teahouse. It is a good spot for a break after a visit to Kiyomizudera and Kodaiji. A cup of matcha and their tasty warabimochi would be the perfect pick-me-up. This teahouse is very popular so be prepared to queue up a bit. You can admire the large and colorful koi fish in the pond while waiting... More

This is always on the top of my list because I'm obsessed with Koi ponds. The tiny garden around the cafe (or tea room) is one of the best uses of small space I have ever seen. Their award winning koi or stunning! Large, beautiful, healthy, in clean water with great lighting for day or night viewing. They allow you... More

It's easy to miss Rakusho as it's not signposted in English so you'll need to look out for some landmarks to help you: go past the Kodai-ji Temple then before you reach the end of the street (where there is a pagoda with a crane on top) look out for a gate on the right hand side of the road... I have been to many great coffee places around the world. This place has the most stunning view of Japanese garden, fancy carp fishes in the pond. Imagine you are Tom Cruise in the last samurai movie. I enjoyed a cup of coffee and hospitality of staffs.

Great warabi mochi and matcha in a traditional Japanese setting, complete with landscape garden outside. Convenient place for a quick stop, steps away from Kodaiji and Yasaka Shrine. Friendly staff and prizewinning koi in the pond-- what's not to like?
