Only the third review I’ve ever written for a restaurant, but I felt compelled to do so. This is by Japanese standards a horrible dining experience and it is a classic tourist trap. No Japanese person would ever eat here, and for good reason, the...service was poor. The meat tasted fine, but it was inartfully presented and was overpriced. The salad was made from ingredients that were withered and close to what you find in a convenience store salad for 170 yen. I honestly can’t think of how this place stays in business. I’ve had probably 2000 restaurant experiences in Japan, and this takes the prize for the worst. If you want to try wagyu, go to a Japanese review site like tabelog and look for something with a rating of 3.4 or greater. Don’t waste your money here.More

I went to this restaurant with my family during our vacation in kyoto and we remained really satisfied with the food and the variety of meats we ate (wagyu and kobe). The food was very tasty and genuine. The service was perfect: Our waiter was...friendly and always smiling like he was happy to be working there, he satisfied every request kindly. He also talked a perfect english so it was very helpful. We ordered the spring offer which had 300 grams of meat between kobe and wagyu and also had broccoli and potatos+some rice. It was pretty expensive but it was worth it.More

We came here because 2 in our party are gluten and nut free. The food was really good. Don’t judge a book by its cover. This is a hidden gem.

This spot was a great find. Both Kobe and Wagu beef were delicious, only thing I wish they had cooked in front of us for the full experience. Also wish they offered the garlic chips and more vegetables like some other restaurants.

Amazing Kobe beef and wagyu beef. Very pricey but we’ll worth it. The service was excellent as well and the staff spoke very clear English.

--- "Kobe beef" is expensive, and there are only those that are recognized as high quality. What do you mean by "low grade Kobe beef" isn'it! ---> I know that Kobe beef is expensive and I also know that Kobe beef is top quality beef. But the "Kobe" beef that was served to me at Niyama Teppanyaki was very chewy and clearly inferior to the other wagyu beef that I have ever tried. From what I know, Japanese wagyu beefs are rated with a rating system of A1 to A5, with A5 being the absolute top quality beef. I have tried many A5 grade wagyu beefs before, so I know how A5 grade wagyu beefs taste like. The Kobe beef that was served to me could by means be A5, unless Kobe beef is totally different from all other wagyu beefs and is not bound by the same rating system. Two days later, we went to another Japanese restaurant that also serves grilled beef. We ordered a mix of Kobe beef and Kyoto beef. The Kyoto beef that was served to us at this other Japanese restaurant was already better than the so-called Kobe beef at Niyama. And when the chef at this other restaurant finally served us the Kobe beef, I could only say "HEAVENLY"! Totally what one would expect from the famed Kobe beef. I did not write this review because I had a bad day and was looking to vent my frustration. Totally contrary, I was highly expectant of the dinner at Niyama but was left thoroughly disappointed by the quality of the so-called Kobe beef.
