Katsukura was recommended to us by our tour guide, and it did not disappoint. Our guide said this was his favorite tonkatsu restaurant, and I can see why. The tonkatsu (breaded, deep-fried pork) was so tender and the sauce was tasty as well. You can order either the pork filet (less fat) or pork loin. We got the filet. You... More

A little on the pricey side but the cut of pork (tenderloin) was amazing and cooked to perfection. The miso soup was also the tastiest we've had so far on our travels. Were able to have unlimited top ups of the miso and the cabbage stuff. We waited about 15mins to be seated which was worth the wait.

Included in the plethora of restaurants in the Cube section of the Kyoto Station building....keep going to the top on floor 11F. Popular place with a queue outside, but we only waited around 8 mins before we were seated. They took our order in the searing outside so it was very efficient (standard Japanese). Food was great, not amazing but... More

Although nearly walking past the entrance, and having to wait 20 or so minutes before being seated, this place is certainly worth it! Sadly a few of the more popular pork dishes were sold out by the time we got there (20.00) we were able to order 2 x large pork tenderloins with all the additional yumminess that the set... More

Tonkatsu was the best I've had in Japan. Really good service even during peak hours. Would definitely recommend.

The fried pork is amazing and so are the sides and the self mixed sauce. It's not a fine dine place neither a local hidden gem. But straight forward and top quality pork with very friendly service. Can highly recommend this place. And prepare to cue around 30 min.

I wasn't on any kind of foodie pilgrimage - I was just looking on the internet for some good deep- fried pork katsu near Kyoto Station. What a find this place was on a dark and rainy day. The pork was succulent, there wasn't a hint of oil on the batter and the prawn was absolutely Godzilla sized (almost too... More

Guess it's a known place for tourist, there are mostly foreigners there. The pork cutlet is to die for!! This is one place we will go back to for sure! One thing that didn't taste good was the egg, bacon & cheese croquet, too salty. Other than that, we enjoyed our meal!

One of the best tonkatsu (breaded pork chop) meals served.Good menu selection also has giant prawns, potato and vegetable crochetes. The food is delicious and the servings of diced cabbage, miso soup and barley with rice is unlimited. The restaurant has English menu and staff speak reasonably ok Englishto communicate and understand. Price wise is reasonable.Thoroughly enjoyed this meal.

Katsukura Kyoto is an extremely popular chain of tonkatsu restaurants based in Kyoto and specializes in tonkatsu - deep fried breaded choice cuts of pork served with rice, miso soup and freshly shredded cabbage. Apart from the usual tonkatsu sets, Katsukura also serves a unique Yuba rolled seasonal vegetable cutlet together with the pork fillet, which was what I had... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
