Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A popular, authentic and atmospheric soba noodle restaurant with a wide range of set menus, many also featuring tempura. English menu available. Recommended.

We arrived in Kyoto with a group of 8 and no plan for lunch and our hotel (the excellent Hotel Kanra Kyoto) called ahead and we had a wonderful soba lunch at Sobanomi Yoshimura - very authentic, high quality, delicious and inexpensive. Maybe they can...open a branch on the Upper West Side??? Highly recommendedMore

We were looking for a nice restaurant and, although this looked very appealing, and so near to our hotel (the Citadines), we passed by as the menu outside was only in Japanese. Having walked around for about 45 mins, we ended up back at this...restaurant and, in desperation, went in to ask if there was a menu in English. We weren’t given an answer, but were shown to a table and given an English menu (although not everything on the Japanese menu featured on the English one, which featured, almost exclusively, tempura dishes! ) We chose the duck, which was so much better than it appeared on the menu! It was served raw, in three ways, and we were given a mini barbecue each to cook it on - delicious ! I’ve made the effort to report on this restaurant because I feel they are missing out on the English speaking market by not advertising that an English menu is available. The restaurant was charming and the staff courteous and helpful. (The bill for 2 duck dishes, a draught beer and a glass of white wine was 40,000 yen! Amazing value!)More

We ate at Sobanomi Yoshimura on our first night in Kyoto. We had a large party of 6, so we waited a little bit outside of the restaurant. It wasn’t a long wait, all things considered. Once we got in, we were seated in a...private room very traditionally decorated. I really enjoyed that about this restaurant. Our group had a variety of dietary restrictions, and the staff was happy to accommodate everyone to the best of their ability. We each ordered the cold soba set. To accommodate our vegan diets, they were able to substitute veggie tempura in place of any fish ingredients. The tempura was delicious, and had a really great texture. It wasn’t overly greasy or fried. They did a really nice job. The cold soba was really refreshing after a long day of travel. An older man was serving us, and he was really friendly and helpful. It was definitely a delicious place to eat, and if I were in Kyoto I would go back.More

My husband and I visited this restaurant whilst holidaying in Kyoto. Lovely service and an English menu, we tried a set meal for two which included sashimi, tempura, a chicken broth, hot soba and dessert for 8000 yen. Very tasty, beautifully served lovely evening.

This restaurant was near our hotel so, after reading the reviews, we ventured there for dinner. It was very busy so we put our name down and waited on the bench outside. It was fascinating seeing the soba being made inside the building and left...you in no doubt as to its freshness. However, we found the soba and the soup to be quite tasteless, which was very disappointing. My recommendation is to only go if you are confident you will really enjoy buckwheat soba!More

We were staying a few doors down at Citadines and felt like an easy meal close by. We had no wait to get in and were seated upstairs. It’s a well oiled machine, being able to watch the noodles being made downstairs and staff equipped...with mics/walkies to get everyone seated and looked after efficiently. I had a dinner set that included cold soba and fresh veggies, delicious. I also tried some tempura and sake, both also lovely. Staff were super friendly and attentive. I liked how the upstairs area had screens between tables that offered some privacy. I stupidly knocked a dressing jar over and broke it and staff were non phased and polite, after me profusely apologising. A no fuss, affordable and enjoyable meal!More

We found this place on TripAdvisor after we decided not to eat at the restaurant recommended by our hotel. We were greeted by friendly staff who were happy to accommodate us with our baby who was fast asleep in her stroller. We ordered a set...menu for 2 and were thrilled with the quality and taste. All the noodles are made fresh onsite and you can even watch them making and cutting the noodles! By the way the noodles were out of this world tasty! English menu was very helpful. Staff were chatty and engaging. No complaints at all.More

It’s only our second day in Kyoto. The ryokan where we’re staying recommended this place. The staff was lovely. The space is acceptable. The wood almost Alpine feel made us wonder whether we should have been there on a winter instead of summer night. Here’s...my complaint. I’m a bit obsessed with getting a reasonable quantity of food. For about $100 USD, my husband and I got the two people fixed price menu. The sashimi was ok. The tempura was excellent. But the grilled soup and fifth course was too much. We gave up after having eaten less than 1/3 of the meal, and we never even tasted the soba noodles. We clearly have a lot to learn when it come to ordering in Japan. We felt like we were at an American restaurant more than somewhere trying to give us enough food to take home in a doggie bag. There are far better places in the neighborhood.More

To all the visitors to Kyoto I DO NOT recommend this restaurant. Their dishes are unappetizing and too expensive!!!!
