My wife noticed this place when we arrived at the station, and it seemed so much easier than the other nearby coffee shops in the station, so we went there the next morning for a wake-me-up. And then back again each of the next 4 mornings we were in Kyoto. Unfortunately, we were always too late for their bacon and... More

Quick and efficient service with my favorite Italian coffees. A rest from trying so many new tastes--not that I don't like doing that too.

Coffee is really tasty: a pleasant surprise in Kyoto station. We were in the rush so took it away, but you can enjoy it sitting in a nice bar.

Great little café at Kyoto station, a bit hard to find but worth it. My marocchino was one of the best I have had & was consistently good on the 3 occasions that we passed through the station. As another reviewer suggested, if you are a latte drinker order the cappuccino instead.

What can I say.... Great coffee is incredibly hard to find in Japan although there are "cafes" and coffee houses everywhere. Illy has set up a beautiful little cafe in Kyoto station that serves consistently good coffee. We also had breakfast and it was good. Worth the effort to find this little gem. Just a little tip, for latte drinkers... More

This small but cozy cafe is located in front of JR Shinkanse gate. The have separetad area for smokers and non smokers guest. It makes us more comfortable to take a little break while waiting for our departure time to Nagoya.

It is uncommon to find such a good coffee in Japan. Sandwiches are also excellent. We tasted the avocado dried tomatoes shrimp sandwich. The non smoking area has the same size as the smoking one. Since most people are non smokers, the place is permanently crowded.

Back in Kyoto this time for the Cherry Blossom festival and of course we had to re-visit our favourite cafe in Kyoto station. Not only were the coffee and sandwich as great as we remembered but the price was still ¥450 for the set despite the recent government consumption tax increase of 3% from beginning April 2014. The flat rate... More

Now that I am back in Malaysia, my wife and I still find this cafe is one of the best cafes. To begin with, it is centrally located, right inside the Kyoto train station, so it is a great place to start off our day with great, strong coffee. For breakfast, tt comes in a set (sandwich and coffee) for... More

There are are a number of cafes in the huge complex that is Kyoto Station ( which contains two underground shopping malls, a hotel and Isetan department store ) but Esspressamente Illy is our favourite. First of all they make excellent cappuccinos. Secondly they have a a value for money breakfast set of coffee plus sandwich for only ¥450. It's... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
