Excellent establishment. Food is fantastic, whether you want traditional Japanese or something more european. Sugarhill has a great atmosphere, Koyano and his staff are very friendly and helpful. Best of all if you know zero japanese it's no problem! Perfect for a first timer to japan and especially Kyoto!

I always caveat reviews with me being a fussy Londoner. This place was a treat. Very casual and very reasonably priced. I was able to have some really good sushi and my partner who doesn't like fish had an abundance of stuff to choose from. Tuna & avocado was delicious. The waiter and owner were really welcoming and had a... More

One of the best meals we had during our trip to Japan. My sister is vegan and the chef was able to accommodate her and she said tofu and Kyoto salad was delicious. One of our party had the carbonara and said it was the best he's ever had. The avocado and tuna dish earned rave reviews. We also had... More

I enjoyed my meal at this place, but I was a little disappointed that the menu seems to cater to the European/American taste. The dishes were good but very similar to things I can get in the US. Maybe the idea of having Pizza or pasta while visiting Kyoto just doesn't sit well with me. If you are looking for... More

Firstly only headed for this restaurant as we had just checked into our AirBnb and we were starving and this was 2min walk away. Walked in, were greeted by a friendly waiter who asked if we had a reservation (which we didn't!) but were able to snatch up the last available table. Ordered: eggplant + tomato pasta, tofu and kyoto... More

We needed some salad after days of rice and noodles, and the kids needed that ultimate comfort food, pizza. Sugar Hill delivered. Staff who speak excellent English, generous sized salad with lots of vegetables, and pizzas customized to the kids' tastes! The food tasted great! We're going back tonight

Visited Sugar Hill while visiting Kyoto as it had great reviews and was conveniently located near our guest house. I had the tuna and avocado with wasabi dressing followed by the chicken teriyaki and it was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended for any visitor to Kyoto.

I had the wasabi tuna and the taro (fried vegetable, a little like a gnocchi). The tuna is absolutely one of the best I've ever eaten. The chewiest, most unsavoury bite was better than the best I've had at Yo!Sushi in the U.K. My friend had the tuna followed by the teriyaki chicken. He said t was gorgeous. The staff... More

We'd found Sugar Hill while perusing Trip Advisor and decided to check it out due to many good reviews! We loved our evening here! Small, intimate atmosphere and the chef/owner provided amazing service! We had a few small dishes - our favourite being the spicy fried chicken - best chicken we've had in Japan!! Would definitely recommend visiting here if... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
