Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A wonderful, calm, beautiful space for a light lunch or afternoon tea and sweets. Discreet but warm hospitality. Beautiful food presentation. This 500 year old Japanese sweet Maison is the only rival of Hermes, once said the CEO of Hermes Japan. If you are visiting...the Imperial Palace, it is a walking distance to this cafe. It was such a privilege to have spent one hour there. You can also walk around the garden or look around the library.More

I highly recommend a trip here after touring the Imperial grounds. Their pristine, charming tea room offers a selection of delicious wagashi, with tables looking out onto a beautiful view of the garden. Please note that a visit here will be on the pricey end,...but this is due to the high reputation of the Toraya confectioners. Very memorable visit; I am already looking forward to the next!More

Toraya Karyo is a very peaceful dessert shop. You'll find the takeout dessert shop on the main road but will need to turn in and walk a bit in the alleyway to reach the sitdown dessert shop. Step in. Choose between indoor and outdoor seating...(outdoor seating is my preference is it isn't too chilly and for a more meditative experience). The outdoor seating area is terrific with a small garden to look at as well as to just breathe in the outdoor air while sitting on a mat and small table (for two people). They serve you a complimentary tea first. Desserts range from shaved ice to some more traditional and seasonal desserts. I had the almond seasonal iteration of their mochi, almond wagashi and matcha. It is a bit pricier as a heads-up. You can also take books if you'd like to read and look at while you eat your desserts.More

A beautiful, refined and peaceful afternoon tea stop after a long walk across the city. The architecture of Hiroshi Naito creates a perfect setting for the refined Kyoto-style sweets of Toraya. A popular place among tourists and locals, so a minimal waiting may be needed...before being offered a seat. Very enjoyable experience.More

What a gem in the city. The garden is really calming and the matcha and wagashi are, as expected of Toraya, top-notch. Great place to have tea with friends.
