Okonomiyaki is a famous Osaka dish that I hadn’t had for a while. It was Trip Advisor reviews that led me to this shop. It’s a small, old, dark busy place. Looks like a bit of a hole in the wall. There was a line...up when I arrived but I only had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. The menu is limited and available in English. I chose the modanyaki which is okonomiyaki cooked with noodles. It was delicious. I had considered ordering the large size but the regular was filling enough. If ordering okonomiyaki there is a variety of fillings but the modanyaki only had one type which was pork. Staff were pleasant and seemed to enjoy their work.More

Part of the fun is watching the chefs fry the soba or flip the okonomiyaki expertly, while your stomach rumbles and you start salivating in anticipation. My first visit was to the outlet in the Umeda Sky Building, and this time I visited the one...located in the Shin-Umeda Shokudogai. They're both relatively hard to find, given that Umeda / Osaka stations are a huge labyrinth, but the journey there (and the subsequent wait) is worth it. I find this place relatively inexpensive, and I love the pork and squid okonomiyaki, as well as the shrimp and potato one.More

This is the 4th time I’ve been to Osaka and tried okonomiyaki many times. Not a great fan but I read about this place and was excited to try. The queue was bearable but the plump waitress was not. She’s rude and I think she...has something against foreigner. Shop was cramped and ventilation was poor. Food was bland and I’ve tasted better okonomiyaki before. Won’t visit againMore

Food is good here. Ambience is interesting. Line is incredibly long sometimes - shows it is incredibly popular. Order Yaki-Udon; Yaki-Soda; Modan Yaki - in that order. The Modan Yaki is incredibly good. I ate the yaki-soba first, and I thought it was the best...tasting food I'd ever experienced until the Modan Yaki the next trip. It's an okonomiyaki restaurant, so they will customize if requested - which my wife did, but I stuck to their recipe. Apparently they got notice of Michelin guide, and deservedly so. Some recent reviews mentioned cramped poorly ventilated and uncomfortable seating. TRUE, but remember, this place was made to serve the working class of Osaka - and not some dumb tourist looking for a classy joint with classy food (you can easily find one of those things in Osaka too). This is comfort food. This is people food... remember that when you go there, don't expect the lounge at the Conrad. (Conrad is a rock's throw away, if you wish to eat there - and the Conrad has good coffee - Kiji does not not). BEST food I've ever had, to the point I wished I lived there so i can go when I felt like it.More

Was at Osaka station and looking for food . Wanted to try another okonomiyaki on our last day. Despite instruction from info centre it was quite hard to locate as it was outside the station in an old part of Hankyu umeda building. There was...a moderate Q like all highly rated places but it was only 30 min. We were not impressed with the food . The 4 types of okonomiyaki we ate lack flavor and the batter was too thick, so don’t bother looking for it. The place is a cramped up hole on the 1st floor and the plump waitress was quite crude with unfriendly gestures behind her mask. Apparently no photography yetso many photosposted.More

Kiji is a very famous Okonomiyaki restaurant in Osaka and my friends read about this Osaka specialty, which is roughly a pancake dish, through multiple food blogs. We arrived shortly before 1pm and the queue was somewhat manageable. While we were waiting for seats, the...waiters passed us the menu, and took our orders. However, given how they cooked the pancake and wanted to keep it warm, it really did not save you much time. While both of my friends were happy with the food, I was personally unimpressed. I chose the soba Okonomiyaki. While it tasted fine, I still did not see the hype. We were given a four people booth and it was very uncomfortable, as they were so crowded. In conclusion, I really did not understand what the hype is about. I can just go to any Okonomiyaki restaurant and find similar quality pancakes. I will not recommend it to anyone and will not return anytime soon!More

Speaking of Okonomiyaki in Osaka this store. A famous okonomiyaki restaurant in Osaka. It is a shop very close to JR Osaka station and Hankyu Umeda station. I ate a Butatama and a Modernyaki.

I choose untypical menu, Shrimp and potato, in this time. It's unique with not only Japanese Okonomiyaki sauce but also tomato ketchup. This combination is very nice. Potato and cabbage are very crispy. Shrimp is tasty. Let's try it.

We discovered this on a foodie blog and are so happy we made the effort to find it. We initially struggled to find it but noticed a previous reviewer photo which helped us notice the entrance! The food was AMAZING - we had the pork...and the shrimp okonomiyaki, they have bacon on top which adds so much flavour and the price is very good! Great atmosphere there, yes you have to wait a while if it’s busy but it’s worth it. If you don’t want to wait get there early. Fully recommend a visit whilst in Osaka.More

The first thing you'll notice with Kiji is that it's a bit hard to find. Go down to the B1 area near the Umeda Sky Building area and look for the restaurant rows. Get to the very end on the lefthand side and you'll find...Kiji (tough to notice if you can't read Japanese). I came right at opening time on a Tuesday and there was no queue luckily! I got to sit right in front of the grill. The menu is all in Japanese so do be aware that you'll have to probably say or point to something that designates what you want. I got the pork okonomiyaki. They also cook the yakisoba in front of you too. After about 15 minutes and drinking a whiskey highball (400 yen I saw on the sign next to me), I got my okonomiyaki which I got to eat right off the grill. Delicious; simple; to the point. No hassle and I felt I got more than my money's worth. Great stuff. :)More

I arrived at 11.15 and waited in a queue until it opened at 11.30. Everyone was seated until it was full and the people in front of us were next to be seated. They led us in and made us queue on the stairs. We...waited an hour with no movement- considering they are essentially making a glorified omelette I didn’t understand how no one had left. Anyway, we stood on a narrow staircase in the smelly, scorching heat, under a dirty net. As time went on, four people left and another two and then another four, but for some reason they weren’t sitting new customers. After a while a lady came out and started taking orders for people in the queue, the people in front of us ordered and she skipped us cos we were foreign. Took a while for her to come back. When we are eventually allowed into the hole we are all sat. Everyone waiting for food- they started cooking not by table but by what everyone had collectively ordered. They went through the whole menu and cooked them, served to the people who ordered that dish and then moved on to the next. Admittedly the food was ok- which is why I’ve rated it two stars, but otherwise make an omelette at home.More

If you have time only for 1 meal of Okonomiyaki and Yakisoba, you need to just come to Kiji, the specialist. Close on Sundays. Inexpensive and truly popular with locals. Be prepare to queue for about 30-45mins during meal times but it is worth it....Serves to you on hot-plate at your table so that it won't turn cold. Less tourist here as restaurant is located in Umeda, a business district. We squeezed in time to go twice even though we were staying at Namba. After eating at Kiji, you'll know the genuine taste.More

The place is difficult to find in the area below the train tracks, unless you suddenly see a queue going up the stairs. Limited seating available, four tables and 7-8 counter seats. But you'll be served fast once you're seated as the waiter would have...taken your order while queuing. Their okonomiyaki is traditional and tastes great, guess that's why locals will wait in queue for it as well.More

We got lost while navigating to Kiji (honten) at Shinumeda Shokudogai and thankfully a very kind-hearted Japanese showed us the way. We arrived about 10 minutes after its opening time and had to wait in queue. An English menu were given and order were taken...not long after. About 30 minutes later we were asked to go upstairs (Kiji is located on the 1st floor). We ordered pork okonomiyaki, squid okonomiyaki and modan-yaki. All were fabulous and affordably priced. The balance of flavors were really good. I had tried okonomiyaki at another restaurant and personally prefer this one a lot. I will definitely come back again next time because I'm already thinking about it while writing this review. Haha Do note that the restaurant is small and narrow. And since it's near train tracks, you can even hear and feel the trains moving. Cool experience. When we left about 1pm, there were no queue at all. So I would suggest either come early or come after lunch time.More
