Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Grossly overrated. I waited one hour outside and 20 min inside. I had tempura which was average and sashimi which was mediocre in quality, taste and presentation.

A nice traditional restaurant, in a busy shopping area. Nice chawanmushi, quite busy, nice ambiance. If you're alone then you'll be seated next to the kitchen and is quite noisy.

This is a must-go to eat the best Chawanmushi!! It is absolutely smooth & delicious. It just slides down your throat. Service was friendly & polite. There was a queue outside the restaurant during lunch but it cleared very fast, than less 5 minutes.

A restaurant with long history. All details are nicely presented. The steamed egg is indeed a big SURPRISE. Tempura and sushi are also of very high quality. The whole building is a gem of antique. Must go again.

We came to Yossou during a day trip we made to Nagasaki from Fukuoka on a Friday for lunch. The original restaurant we wanted to go to was closed and we happened to find this on Trip Advisor. We got there around 1:30 pm. You...have to remove your shoes to enter the upstairs dining area. We were seated right away. There is a room where you can sit on the floor and another room to sit on chairs. We sat on the chairs. The seating is comfortable. Perhaps we ordered the wrong items but our lunch was horrible. We ordered the Oyako Don for 880 yen. There were just a few small pieces of chicken in there. Barely any chicken. Also ordered the Chirashi Sushi which was sashimi over rice for 1155 yen. Here, it was mainly rice barely covered with razor thin pieces of sashimi. Overall it was a bad dining experience. Also, our green tea was never refilled even though the staff could see our cups were empty. They do have an English menu and we paid in cash.More

This shop had been making steamed eggs for 150 years! Definitely try out their steamed eggs, not cheap though! We had to take our shoes off before entering the restaurant and a staff would give you a wooden block to get your shoes back when...you leave after the meal. We get to choose to sit on chairs or tatame (the floor), which we didn't mind at all. We each orders a set, the 3 coloured rice was also very delicious, it consists of shredded dried pink shrimps, egg shreds and some sort of preserved vegetables. The sides were nice too! There are another pair of slippers in the washroom for you to use.More

Very distinctive Nagasaki cuisine. Their signature dishes are some set trays with their Chawanmushi -- a custard (not at all sweet) that contains a mix of seafood.

This well-known restaurant is located just off the main shopping arcade of Hamanomachidori. It's popular with locals and tourists alike, and you can always expect to wait in line if you come around noon time. My suggestion is hold off until after 1 pm when...the lunch crowd dies down. I went around 1:30 and was seated immediately. You have the option of Western-style seating on the first floor or tatami mats on the second floor (remove your shoes before going upstairs). The ambience is nice, and if seated on the first floor there's a nice mini-garden to look at while eating. The menu is only in Japanese but there are pictures for every dish so it's not difficult to order. Sets are near the front and a la carte dishes are near the back. I decided to go with the Yossou Teishoku, a lunch set costing about US$20 that contained several dishes the restaurant is famous for, including their steamed egg custard, tri-color sushi rice bowl, and kakuni (braised pork belly), as well as a few other small vegetable side dishes. The kakuni was good, sweet, and braised to perfection served with a dollop of mustard to cut through the richness. I thought the tri-color sushi was quite average, though it seems to be what the restaurant is most famous for, along with the egg custard which was really good, probably the best I've ever had.More

I was typing earlier and somehow my work was erased. Maybe I pressed the wrong key. So here again. Apologies. My wife read this eatery from a Blog. Fortunately, it was within walking distance from our hotel. However, Ms Google does not do very well...on the ground without GPS and in shopping arcade and alleys. Fortunately, a nice lady whom we asked for direction decided to walk us there. It was only a 5 minutes walk. Such a nice lady. We invited here to lunch with us but she kindly refused. There was a short queue and we were up within 10 minutes of waiting. If there are seats downstairs, you need not take off your shoes and sits on chairs and tables. We were alloted upstairs and were given a wooden plaque to help identify where our shoes are kept as well as our table number. Fortunately we were given a table with chairs as against the other side where you sit on the floor on tatami. We ordered the set so that we are covered by the eatery delicacies. The seasoned pork is very nice. The egg pudding is so wonderfully soft and has bits of different ingredients. Overall very nice. Seated next to our table was a couple from Fukuoka. The kind gentleman shared with us his squid specialty which was so very nice. He thought we were from Korea and he uses korean to greet us. We introduced ourselves as from Singapore. We also ordered sake and had a drink with him and toast to their good health. Yossou highly recommended.More

Great food. They only give you the English menu if you ask for it. The menu that they have put on the table is in Japanese. The menus are different and they only give you one. Someone in my group was borrowing a menu from...the table next to us, then one of the staff members came just to take it away. They make you take off your shoes when you come in. It is very cold in side.More

Ideal restaurant for a true Japanese dinning experience!!! And the food is beyond excellent. From the seafood and sushi to the pork cuttles and the tempura, everything is delicately made and presented. Must do in Nagasaki! Recommendations: wear warm socks, your shoes will be removed.

We walked by during lunch and there was a long line out the door of people waiting in the cold. During the day it was recommended that we try it as a traditional Nagasaki dinner. Honestly, we tried to stop at a few other restaurants...but they were full, so we ended up at Yossou around 7:30pm for dinner. You deposit your shoes by the door and then go to your table. We were put at the area with chairs, but there is also a section without. They didn’t ask for our preference, maybe because it was busy or maybe because of the language barrier. Once seated, they give the menus and explain for you to press a button at the table for them to come back when you are ready to order. We tried to ask a few questions about different menu sets, but the staff don’t speak much English. However, I appreciate their attempt. After all, I am the one visiting Japan and don’t speak Japanese. Note that they do not offer an English menu but most of the sets have photos. You can usually guess at what is included. I got the set that included the braised pork belly. My wife ordered a set that included sushi. Both were quite average. The pork belly was really, really good but everything else in the set was not to my taste. My wife loves sushi but said theirs was pretty bland. The “fishiness” part was strong but that was it. Not what you would come to expect in Japan. The price is a little steep for what you get, but it is Japan and prices tend to run a little high. They do allow to pay by credit card.More

Those kind of places remind a bit of some Edo-period woodblock prints were large rooms with many people a depicted eating and having fun. For lovers of "chawamushi" this seems to be a sort of mecca. As it is not my thing, I can't really...comment on that, but the rest was good and my Japanese colleague was very pleasedMore
