Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great atmosphere and friendly staff. The bartender was great and so Joe, the owner. Went there several times. Weekends have a live band. Summertime brings outside tables. Very clean

The man who seated us was smiling and efficient. I didn't get his name, but the host/hostess is generally the first impression one has of a restaurant and he gave a good one, though he was clearly engaged elsewhere and kind of in a hurry....No problem. Good guy. Angie was our server and she was attentive and personable. Delightful. She clearly has the right stuff for this industry and her positivity and effort were admirable. However, as has been my experience on previous visits to Shanty (though it has been over a year or so), there remains a noticeable lack of training invested in the staff. She should have been familiar with the menu, the soup du jour, etc. We also learned that the soup du jour was also yesterday's soup du jour. Now I'm aware that restaurants may get more than one day from a stockpot full of soup and that in many cases, certain soups actually improve; crab soup is an exception, cream based or not. That's TMI, lack of training, and it's a shame when you have good people who want to do a good job not to give them the tools they need to be wholly professional. If you're a bar aficionado, then I suspect you may find The Shanty appealing. The bar was full, not a chair to be had (and there are many available) on a Saturday evening during dinner hours. Not my thing. It did appear that the folks sitting there were happy with it. Good for them. The restaurant business is brutal, fickle and unforgiving so I tend to look for things to applaud rather than criticize. Unfortunately, though the food was delivered timely and professionally, neither the presentation nor the taste of the food was very good. In one case the portion was meager as well, though it didn't matter much as we left most of it on the plate. The chicken Chesapeake was overseasoned with an old bay cream based sauce that was waaaay too loud, and the chicken breast was overcooked and dry. The baked potato was fine and the accompanying vegetable medley adequate. The pasta dish was barely edible and though Angie did her level best to address the situation, the replacement pasta was way over lemoned and unduly sour with a strange taste. Let me clarify that there was nothing to indicate that the food was not fresh or anything like that. Both plates were simply poorly executed. Bad recipes or bad execution or both. It gives me no pleasure to write a middling review. Not recommended.More

Located in 'theater district', had dinner before a show. Ate al fresco at table outside, was nice feel. Had fish tacos, they were good, average; service was fair. They have live music. Would try it again, jury still out.

Went here for dinner on a Tuesday night @ 6:00PM. Few people at the bar, one table of six in the dining area. It has a nice pub atmosphere, the service was very good but the French onion soup, $7.00 bowl, was salty. Wife had...crab cakes, $24.00 for two, and they just didn't taste like crab; vegetables were overcooked. I played it safe with a hamburger, $12.00, with fries which was pretty good. Fair selection of beers, light on the cocktail list but this appears to be a local watering hole and that is typically what you find. Not sure if we will return as my wife doesn't like hamburgers.More

Wait staff was non existent. We ended up leaving our table and going to the bar so we could get waited on. Ordered food and drinks, the bartenders were great. Food was expensive and not worth it. Crab cakes were mushy. Spirit drinks seemed to...be a blended of left over brands. Bathroom was clean. Lots of parking. Live music was good a great place to see a band and dance just eat elsewhere before you come and drink bottle beer.More

We went for a couple of friend's birthdays. One of our favorite bands was playing that night. We had a table right up front. The service was very good. Our waitress was available almost every time we looked up. I ordered a few apps for...us to share. We had the french onion soup pierogies. You'll have to have those. We also had the cheese steak, the lamb chops and the boom boom shrimp. I didn't have the cheese steak so I can't comment. I did have the lamb chops. It came with a Thai chili sauce. It was great. The only thing, the sauce was at the bottom of the dish. All the greens were soaking it up. Once dipping the chops in, that made a big difference. Great dish. The boom boom shrimp were good but they needed more sauce. Compared to others, the needed more of that boom boo sauce. All in all, it was a great visit and we were very satisfied with everything there. Food, drinks, service, atmosphere and the entertainment. Go and enjoy.More

A friend and I met for drinks on a Friday night at 5:30. When we arrived, the dining area was empty, but we had hoped to sit at the bar, which was full. There was a small table at the kitchen end of the bar...and we asked the hostess if we could sit there and wait for bar seats, which she said was fine. We sat for a good 5 minutes without anyone offering us anything. We stopped a waitress who said she would get someone. Nobody came and so she, 5 minutes later, took our order of a beer and a pineapple/rum tall drink. It took awhile for my beer and her RUM AND COKE to appear. It went back, but we never got another drink for her. People left the bar and we relocated. The bartender who made the wrong drink, never acknowledged us, however the male bartender did. My friend said, I was served the wrong drink, and the female bartender, without apologizing, simple said to the male bartender, "Can you make her what she wants?" After finishing our drinks, and waiting for 10 minutes, nobody offered us another drink, so we flagged down the male bartender,(who was very friendly), for more drinks and dinner menus. There are maybe 7 or 8 entrees on the menu. I think four seafood choices, a couple of beef and a chicken dinner. I had the Pan Seared Scallops. My friend had a daily special of chicken over mashed potatoes, topped with cheese and it was served with sautéed zucchini squash. She said it was pretty good. My scallops came. There were four, served over what was supposed to be celery root puree, caramelized cabbage with a whole grain mustard sauce and Egyptian Couscous for $20. A dinner salad is not offered with the entrees at The Shanty. My meal was not good. First, the dish was all white, no color added for presentation. The scallops were sandy. The caramelized cabbage was greasy and mixed with onion. I picked out three slivers of cabbage. The mustard sauce was terrible. There wasn't any mustard flavor in it. I love couscous, but theirs was horrible. It wasn't creamy and soft, it was like eating warm cottage cheese. I ate only the scallops. I think we could have sat there until the place closed and nobody would have paid one bit of attention to us. Nobody asked how dinner was, we sat for half of our dinner without drinks, except for water. Finally, we each got another drink because by now, the band was setting up and they are good, so we decided to stay for the fist set. By this time the restaurant was almost full. Mostly people drinking. We discovered that the owner had been there all night. He never came around to check on how people were enjoying their food/drinks. He did however, have a lively conversation just behind where we were sitting at the bar. A male friend and he were discussing business, and every other word out of their mouths was "F%*Kin". I really hate when I hear grownups talking like they are in high school, in a public place, especially in a restaurant, where I am trying to have a conversation with my friend. I think it's rude and extremely unprofessional. The bartender ignored us for the remainder of the night. He was responsive when we asked him for something, but never offered us anything all night. I would never return here, nor would I ever recommend it to anyone.More
