Bar Luiz serves good, simple food in a classic setting, full of atmosphere. They are in a central location close to many tourist attractions and make a great stop for visitors

I stopped by for a pint and a snack on a hot afternoon and this place was perfect to wind down after walking a while. Focus is on service quality and it is great, seeing these servers work as they do is beautiful.

Pretty convenient location, food and Chopp were very good. Worth the stop for lunch if you are in the Centro region! Be aware that it can get pretty busy during the lunch hours. Knowing no Portuguese was not an issue, there are English menu options.

If you happen to be in downtown Rio, make sure you visit Bar Luiz. On one of the main historic streets, this bar was founded by germans. This is also why you are sure to find two great things: great draft beer and one of the best german style pork chops (Kassler) in town. The potato salad that comes with... More

As their motto claims. We found it after visiting Saara Market and was a right decision. Lots of prices hang on their walls, recognizing one of the best restaurants in Rio as traditional cuisine. They serve German food and you mustn't miss their potatoes salad. The place it's very charm and many locals in there.

Historic, perhaps the oldest of Rio de Janeiro, with excellent potato salad, and a variety of tasty sausages and chop (beer) and gentle and efficient servers, but very noisy, like many places in Brazil, the regulars have little concern for the presence of the others, and we can't stay long to enjoy the ambience.

Around for 125 years, Bar Luiz on the Rua Carioca is a traditional downtown favourite with a solid unchanging menu. Its physical appearance as a German beer hall is matched by a menu specializing in chopp (beer), excellent potato salad, and a variety of tasty sausages and salt meats. Hidden away on the large menu is a chicken cutlet served... More

Lovely lunch of traditional German food! My partner and I shared a mixed plate for one and it was too much for us to finish (and we like to eat!!). The rib was absolutely delicious and the potato salad was quite possibly the best I have ever had. Highly recommend!

One the few places downtown with reasonable prices, and a good quantity of food. Beer on draft is fabulous, Roast beef and potato salad an absolute must.

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.
