This morning we visited this cafe. It is situated in a tree lined street. The cafe has a modern fit out with lots of wood and industrial type chairs and light fittings. There are two bar like seating ares facing outside as well as tables inside. The windows in front of the bar seats open to the street so you can... More

When you are at Sumerian you feel like in a coffee shop near a university in California. Execllent coffee drinks, bakery goodies and super bagels. Like California. At least that is the memories it sparks in me when I go there. Next door is a whole in the wall that sells beer. Draft beer. You stand on the street and... More

This place has decent moderate sized lunches. The beef sandwhich I had was very gristly. Generally the food has a decent variety of styles adn good quality. I would not go out of my way to eat here but its nice. It overflows to the street which is common here on Shan Xi Lu. Fun environment. The real treat here... More

Heard the bagels were great, went there with high expectations but they were just ok. Good coffee though. Good food for a Chinese New Year's morning.

Great ambiance and friendly staff. The coffee selection is impressive and so are their creative lattes. The cookies they sell are wonderful, such a treat for a westerner in dire need of a proper cookie!! The only drawback is that it is very overpriced.

I missed having Chai Latte everyday in NYC. So once in a while, I'd stop by Sumerian to have a cup of chai latte. The quality varies depending on who you get as a barista. But the ambience there is always good to catch up with friends and old colleagues. If you need to find more venues like this for... More

Have visited here a number of times and unfortunately the staff have changed for the worse. I hate it when I go into a cafe and am instantly made to feel like I am really troubling the staff by simply ordering a drink. Just one drink! There wasn't a queue either, they weren't rushed off their feet. To be fair... More

Excellent coffee (Yunnan coffee). Nice enough bagel (Sausage, egg and cheese in a sesame bagel, though the egg was far from freshly done). Excellent selection, though the girl at the counter didn't really have English and was unable to give anything beyond the most likely choices as a recommendation. Music was relaxing and the volume was perfect Prices are a... More

I was looking for good coffee place in Shanghai to buy roasted coffee or just enjoy a good cafe place. I look up many articles about this place, three of them rating this place #1, and even one of them rated this higher than Rumors coffee which I find way better than this place after visiting. I ordered Sumerian coffee... More

Staying in Jing'an

Neighbourhood Profile
The heart of this neighborhood is the Jing'an Temple, while the main artery of excitement and entertainment is West Nanjing Road. Close to the Former French Concession, the area has a similar draw for foreign residents but displays a more commercial character. Large, flashy malls, luxe residential high-rises and trendy nightlife areas can be found along West Nanjing Road, but areas off the busy street have the same quiet cafes and independent boutiques that many people think of as distinctive of the Former French Concession. Jing'an is less encased in amber, though, and it's possible to immerse yourself more fully in the energy of China's most bustling metropolis here.
