We were traveling with a large group (10 people, including our children, friends, and their children). We found the restaurant after a full day of driving and an evening at the beach, and we were ready to kick back and enjoy a meal. Even though it was close to closing, the staff was friendly and accomodating, the food was delicious,... More

We began with chargrilled oysters. Truly a must here. Absolutely to die for. We tried the whole flounder with crabmeat stuffing and the salad bar with a bowl of gumbo. We like the salad bar and the price for it and the gumbo is excellent. The server quoted us the wrong price for adding the crabmeat stuffing. She was $2... More

We had a group of 16 educators. We got there about 6:15 and didn't leave until about 8:45. Took a little long but the food was delicious. The waitress was great, but they really should have had more than one waitress for that group. (She still had other tables too) As normal, we loved the food. I had fried crab... More

Half Shell is the kind of place that you can go to for a nice sit down dinner or for a casual Sunday brunch and sit at the bar. The service, food, and atmosphere is always consistently great. It's difficult to recommend one particular item...but some personal "go-tos" for me are the Seafood Pot Pie, Oyster Orleans, Poached eggs &... More

Having grown up in Mobile I know and enjoy good seafood. Having moved away a number of years ago I look forward to coming back to Mobile and enjoying once again getting some really good seafood. In the past I always returned to the good old standbys that I had remembered, but alas some of these have become commercialized and... More

If you are looking for great seafood, this is the place. Very fresh, well prepared seafood. I had the Red Snapper blacked Wireless a cream sauce wit Conecha sauage. Delicious!

Half Shell does a great job with presentation, service and great taste. Good quality lunch at a good price.....you will probably spend a bit more here but the quality is noticeable and enjoyable. Broad menu of Southern and Louisiana style seafood is the primary strength. Much to enjoy and try over lunch or dinner.

And I've always enjoyed it. There are some things that don't really care for. Like the gumbo or the broiled selections. But I really like their crab cakes, fresh fish selection and their oysters on the half are really good as well. Keylime pie and turnip greens are killer good too! I'd also recommend anything that is blackened.

The food was excellent: Fire grilled oysters, baked stuffed shrimp, and key lime pie (although I thought it was a small piece). The service was spotty. The greeter seated me, brought my iced tea, and took my order. Someone else checked on my oysters, then my waiter brought the entree. It took a long time for him to pick up... More

Went to this place for dinner a night. Staff and environment was great. Food taste wasn't bad but wasn't anything special. Probably the only thing I didn't like was the price. It just seemed like everything was high.

Description
Opening its first location in Gulf Shores in 1983, the Original Oyster House restaurant quickly expanded and opened its second restaurant two years later on the Mobile Causeway. It soon became known as a Gulf Coast favorite for panoramic waterfront sunsets on the Mobile Delta, fresh Gulf Coast seafood and award-winning gumbo. Classics such as hand-battered fried crab claws, blackened Mahi and fire-grilled Gulf oysters kept locals and visitors coming back for more. A visit usually includes kids on the playground, seafood platters and Southern hospitality. Along with its take-out, homemade desserts and seafood gumbo, the Original Oyster House has been sending alligators home in kid's meals, and gives back to our community in sponsorships and donations. It has been recognized for its environmental practices including converting its fry oil into biofuel to transport, its solar water heaters and the only wind turbine on the Causeway, which generates electricity when winds reach 8 miles an hour or more. in 2016, the Original Oyster House piloted Alabama's FIRST Oyster Shell Recycling Program.
