Having been to view the seals with a friend, we decided to have lunch at the Axe and Cleaver - what a splendid compliment to an enjoyable morning out! We all chose the fish and chips, and the fish was beautifully cooked, my wife making comment on the wonderful light batter, and the chips were hand-cut. The welcome and attention from the staff all added to the warm ambiance of the ocassion.

We wanted something for lunch so stopped here for a bite to eat. There was a good range of options available and all at a reasonable price. My wife had the scampi and I had the lasagne both of which were good size portions. Our food came quickly and appeared freshly prepared. I was a pig and had a side order of garlic bread, this proved too much for me and I had to share it with my wife. With regards to drinks, there’s a good range available and we weren’t disappointed. We would highly recommend eating and drinking here.

We were pointed towards this place by a friend who lives locally and we weren’t disappointed. The food was freshly prepared and very tasty, prices were pretty reasonable overall. We had a couple of pints while here and the staff couldn’t have done enough for us, allowing me to taste a couple of ciders before choosing one. It was good to find a pub where customer service was still a priority. We will be back if we’re ever in the area again.

We sat down to what was intended to be a family meal on the last evening of our break, we were seated in a little bar area which was quiet with a couple of regulars having a social drink nothing out of the norm. We were then joined by a group of already well oiled adults with 3 young kids with them they started off just quite noisy and rowdy (you expect a bit of that in a pub) but that moved onto unsavoury conversation in full ear shot of their own children and my 9 year old daughter, discussions of paedophiles and constant foul language and one of them finding it acceptable to stand rubbing herself at the table discussing being on Porn Hub, they then proceeded to accuse my other daughter of filming them whilst she was sat in on her phone minding her own business whilst we awaited our meals. I assured them she was not recording them to then continue to be targeted by the group for more verbals. This was clear as day to the landlady and the staff and they allowed them to continue this lack of ownership for the situation resulted in the adults in the group partaking in a food fight which they quickly blamed on the kids when challenged by the locals (not the landlady). They were allowed to continue to give us abuse and finish their meal shortly followed by serving them a round of slammers to top it off. Only after they left did the land lady approach us an apologised ( a little late for that ) she spent 5 minutes tidying the remains of the food fight she then said they looked to find us another table but there wasn’t any, at no point did it occur to her to remove the problem !!! We were served our meals which were of a good quality but after what we had to endure for the proceeding half hour unsurprisingly put us all off our meals over £100 to be abused by other diners unchallenged by the management was not the experience you expect on a family meal out. We had been there already once before that week but needless to say we wont be going back any time soon, the best we got was a sorry and an offer of a free dessert whilst seeing we hadn’t finished the meals ?? One of the group was a local so clearly more concerned with keeping her happy than maintaining an acceptable atmosphere for paying customers. Comfortably the worst experience I have had as a paying customer out for a meal and this was compounded by the absolute lack of ownership by the management. Guarantee had that been happening in the main restaurants seating area the action taken would have been very different.

First time here for Sunday lunch after hearing many great things, the surroundings and staff are good. The Sunday lunch was tasty but not roasted meat or potatoes, it seemed like repacked meat, which is not what I would expect. It's a shame as it did taste nice, the peas were fresh and the large buttered carrot was great. Please roast your meat and roast potatoes, it's so much better!

Our new favourite costal lunch pub. Always looking for a reasonable place for a lite bite and a decent beer and wine too. Regularly past this enroute to Louth and decided to give it a try. Both had the Axe Wrap which for £6.95 was fantastic value and so very tasty (could of shared one it was that big) My partner had a lovely pint of Bateman's and I had a surprisingly nice glass of a Sauvignon Blanc subsstitue. Friendliest staff ever.. will absolutely return.. so pleased we stopped and never drove past

Local pub in the village where we were renting a holiday cottage. Stooped for Friday lunch. All three of us had the fish and chip special at £9.95 with a pint (or drink). Great fresh fish. Good sized portions. Offered a gluten free option of batter which my husband had and said was very good. Outdoor dining available in a covered area with heaters. Special call buttons for table service. Great set up. Had a nice local ale to wash down the meal. Good value and tasty

Two of my party of 3 are physically disabled and one struggles with loud noise and hard surfaces so the staff kindly agreed that we would sit in the conservatory which is much quieter than the main bar area. The area was clean; the staff were welcoming and appropriately masked. The food was good - tasty "standard fayre", well cooked and well presented. The garlic mushrooms were definitely not as unexpected - it was more like a soup than anything but it was really tasty and came with hot, fresh bread to dunk. The prawn cocktail had plenty of prawns and the roast turkey and roast pork were lovely although the portion of roast crackling could have been a little more generous. The roast parsnips were delicious. My ONLY criticisms are that the place was packed and there is insufficient on site parking with, as far as I am aware, no dedicated disabled parking. Also, the service was slow. When the food did arrive, it was either hot or cold as appropriate to the dish - it just took a long time to get from kitchen to table. Yes, we will visit again.

Thank you so much for taking time to write us a review. Unfortunately with the pub being on an island we have very limited car parking space and with having roads all around it is just not possible to extend our premises. Regarding the slow service with everything being cooked fresh to order, when we are busy it will take longer to come out of the kitchen I'm afraid. We do try and advise customers when we are busy there will be a wait time.

I had booked this on the revues and it was to be a treat for our last night. There were six of us booked at six thirty and the welcome was lovely. We ordered drinks and food and that came and was very nice. However our main course when it finally came one hour and forty five minutes later was cold and had to be sent back to re warm. The Lasagne was cold the fish was cold and the five of us who had chips with the meal all were cold. We were going to have a dessert but after such a long wait we decided not to bother. People were coming in after us and after eating they were leaving well before us. The waitress did offer us a round of drinks as an apology however as two of us were driving we were not impressed. By the time we left it was nine thirty and the dining area was empty. Very disappointed and would not go again or recommend.

We are so sorry to read that you did not have a very good experience when you visited us. During our busy times we do get a wait on food with it being homemade and cooked to order but you should never of have waited the length of time you claim. If you would like to give us a call to discuss the matter further please call 01507 358 738

We are staying locally and I had asked our landlord in advance for any recommendations for our first night. We assumed that we needed to book because of the covid restrictions. We were greeted warmly and the lovely lady who served us explained that as they were so busy, there was at least a forty minute wait. As my husband is a retired chef and we understand the workings of catering only too well, we were quite happy to wait. My husband ordered pie, chips and vegetables and I ordered mushroom stroganoff. We were cool with the hour and ten minute wait and we were both hungry by the time it arrived. My husband's pie looked lovely. My stroganoff looked as though it was a plain mushroom, very thinly sliced and boiled in plain cream. Having expected shallots, garlic, paprika, brandy, seasoning etc, with possibly a little gherkin (as some traditional recipes call for) I was a little disconcerted, but I tipped it on the rice in the hope that it tasted better than it looked. It didn't...it tasted of nothing; even two sachets of salt and two sachets of pepper couldn't redeem it so I picked out and ate the few slices of mushroom and half the bread and left the rest as my appetite had deserted me. Our lovely lady took my husband's comments back to the chef who said that he would change it for next time. We'd already decided by then that we weren't going to bother with dessert or coffee and wouldn't go back. Such a shame as were looked after so well and the ladies were certainly pushed to the limit that night as we weren't the only people who didn't enjoy their meals.

Thank you so much for taking time to write your review. I am so sorry your meal wasn't to your liking. Our waitress did pass your comments on to our chef and it is something he is looking into regarding the recipe. We are pleased that you enjoyed the rest of your experience with us and that our front of house team did us proud

Dropped in on the off chance after an afternoon visiting the seals. Immediately upon entry we were met by a very bubbly member of staff and made to feel very welcome. Due to a temporary dietary problem in our group of 4 people we asked if we could have a bit of a tweak on the menu and it proved to not be an issue and they were very accommodating. Other members of staff were also very pleasant. Although we only had soup and chip butties everything was fine and other main meals that passed our table looked great. All in all a nice place to go.

Loved this place, it is a proper local pub with some great food, everyone was very friendly and helpful plus the dogs loved it (they got a lot of fuss). We were made to feel very comfy here both by staff and punters alike so much so that we came here 6 times, 3 lunchtimes for a drink after some long beach walks, and 3 times for dinner. Ales are well kept and food was top-notch (mixed grill is not for the faint-hearted and is totally delicious. Totally recommend and will definitley be back when in the area.

Tjis pub is an absolute gem, great for meals and live music. The pub has lots of seated areas, a bar. a lounge a conservatory and a covered heated outside area. Staff are very welcoming and helpful. Food is plentiful and amazing. Live bands on at weekends. Great quiz on a Friday great prize. Various offers midweek. This is the heart of the area.

Me and a friend were visiting the area and popped in for Sunday lunch on the off chance. We were too lste but told we could have fish and chips with peas. The food arrived and my friend, who was from Brazil, said it was the nice fish in batter he'd ever tasted. I had to agree...Nice and crispy but not greasy accompanied with a generous portion of delicious chips and peas. I live in Wisbech about an 80 minute drive away but will definitely come back

Kennedy Kennedy We had a lovely break away here for 2 nights over the Christmas period. Mick and Kim were great hosts, they were in contact before, during and after the trip making sure we had everything we needed and more! They even made us a booking at the local pub for when we arrived to ensure we had a table if it was busy! The accommodation itself was fantastic! The space was great for what we needed with everything you might need and more, including all the breakfast items you may need and a fridge full of drinks with a treats basket too. The dogs were also very well catered for with their own little space with food and water bowls provided for them too. We would highly recommend the Axe & Cleaver pub down the road for food and drinks, and the Chinese takeaway too! Thank you Mick and Kim for a fantastic stay and we will definitely be recommending the accommodation to family and friends
