Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Having been to these tea rooms on several occasions and given good reviews it seemed like a nice way to spend the afternoon, a lovely drive over Exmoor with the knowledge a lovely coffee and cake awaited us. On this occasion the review for both...service and food doesn't reflect what I'd expected from past experience. On arrival we'd asked for cake and coffee along with some soup, the person serving us said they thought they didn't have any more soup but after a short discussion with the person cooking, we were offered potato and leek soup. After paying we sat outside in the sunshine and waited, and waited until after 20 minutes the coffee arrived, as the coffee began to lose its heat I drank it and wondered when my Walnut and Coffee Cake would arrive along with the soup we'd ordered. Eventually after enquiring when the cake and soup would arrive, it arrived but not before the coffee had been despatched to the depths of my hungry stomach. The soup was luke warm, what had possibly been potato and leek soup was now a thin watered down liquid which didn't resemble anything other than a watered down soup. Clearly standards have slipped from what had once been a delightful experience and one we'd become accustomed to. I advise all those faithful customers to recognise those standards which made this location a must visit are no more. Save your money for a tea room which cares for its customers.More

On our tour of Exmoor we happened across the tea rooms at Withypool. After visiting Winsford and finding it was mostly closed, except for the lavatories, which are exceptional, so well done to the residents of Winsford for the superb upkeep of a vital convenience....Anyhow, the tea rooms at Winsford were closed, and due to finally close December 2023. So after grabbing a mars bar and paper from the open shop, next door to the pub, we moved on to Withypool. The tea rooms are situated very near the river and housed in an old service station, not fussy and quaint. We didn't require much to eat, so we looked at the menu and liked the sound of the soup of the day and the cheese scone and mature cheese and chutney. The scones were large and delicious, the cheese was beautifully mature and crumbly, and the chutney was just right to add a sweet and sour compliment to the cheese. We also topped it off with a very generous pot of tea. Service was quick and courteous, and the food was just right. Thank you... Oh, the reference to cheap petrol is the old pumps that are on show outside...More

Oh guys the scones….oh just divine! Fruit scones with cream and jam are seriously amazing! Won’t lie when I say it was the best scone I’d ever tried! The flat white coffee just hit the spot also. Daughters enjoyed luxury hot chocolates the first time...we went and the chocolate ice cream milkshake the second and loved it all! Staff were so friendly and welcoming. Will definitely have to come back for those scones and flat white too! Thank you 😊More

Nice but …. Family of 6 visit, to try the cream teas we had read about. We ordered 5 cream teas and received 2 bowls of 2 different jams but only one bowl of cream. For 5 people the amount of cream seemed pathetic. Of...course we are British so don’t like to ask for more. Scones were nice but cream had to be rationed. Disappointed as you don’t get a price reduction for ordering 5- so why give out less cream. Ordering each separately would be your best option!More

It’s clear why this simple tearoom is rated so highly. Super friendly staff, perhaps the lightest most tasty large fruit scones I have ever had (although smothering then with cream and Jam made them quite a bit heavier) and a decadent sized pot of tea....At a reasonable price in lovely location. I only wish I had room left for some cake. (They have quite an extensive menu and we told by one local their breakfast are as good too) We are staying locally and will certainly make another visit before we head home. If your passing go, if your not passing take a detour!More

Great place to refuel after a walk. Although a little windy we sat outside and had lunch while taking in the views. The sandwiches/rolls seemed a bit pricey so we opted for the quiche and salad which was excellent. This cafe has a license so...a bottle of Exmoor ale was an alternative to tea! The cakes were very good. Staff were friendly and helpfulMore

Great scones but as we left I was overcharged, due to a genuine mistake. Instead of apologising I was made to feel it was my fault and the waitress rolled her eyes at me when I explained how it happened and was very rude. I...won't return. Maybe some staff training is needed in basic good manners.More

We visited on Easter Friday as we were staying up the road at the Royal Oak. We were blessed with a lovely sunny day with people sitting outside enjoying the fresh air. Scones were huge and fab, freshly baked! Lashings of cream with strawberry and...whortleberry jam and a lovely pot of tea to round things off. We chose the plain scones but you could also order fruit & cheese scones, and there was a great selection of cakes & ice creams too. Lola The Wonder Dog enjoyed a Marshfield pet ice cream too. There was a bit of a delay in service but they were busy, we were in no hurry and the banter from the young kitchen staff learning the ropes was fun to hear! Well done all, highly recommended 👍More
