We booked Sunday lunch for 7 people at the George at less than 24 hours notice, and the landlord did his absolute best to accommodate us. We came with 3 kids, two of whom are pretty picky, and didn't want anything that was actually on the menu. The staff were warm, friendly and accommodating, especially given the place was absolutely packed. The meals were delicious. A couple of mistakes were made, but they were rectified swiftly, and considering the complexity of our order and how busy the pub was, I was very impressed with the service, food and ambience of the pub. We'll definitely be back.

We had a sandwich at the George when we arrived in Lacock and were very disappointed. It was served with a handful of salad leaves and French fries which tasted as though they'd been cooked in stale fat. This lovely old pub looked tired and neglected outside and is in serious need of some TLC especially considering it is in a National Trust village and the oldest pub in Lacock. Very disappointed!

Hi Tuscany079, Thank you very much for your review, we are very sorry for your disappointment, rest assured this is not the level of quality we normally pride ourselves on. We have made improvements to all aspects of our service as we've taken learnings, like most businesses, from the unpredictable climate at the moment and we hope to be able to show you these improvements on a return visit! Regarding the aesthetics, I'd love to hear more about this if you can find a moment to call and ask for myself - although we are limited in what we are able to do due to the age of the building, we have started to improve our garden etc as the industry has improved, but if there is any more we can do we will certainly try! Many thanks, Carl

We were on a tour for the day and stopped at the George Inn in Lacock for breakfast. Breakfast itself was a little chaotic (as it likely will be when 50 people come walking in a the same time), but the staff handled it well, and everyone left well fed. It was nice to have a proper English breakfast, and the pub itself was so cool. Having been around since 1361, it was so neat to see all of the original features (mixed in with some of the modern things like running water, etc.). We learned some really fun facts about the George and its history, which just added to the experience. We were really glad this was part of the package.

So, we went in for lunch today. I asked for Earl Grey Tea, but they didn't have any, which, from my experience, always seems to be the harbinger of a bad time. One of us queued at the bar for ages to order food, then it took ages for food to actually show up. There only seemed to be one waitress for what was a super busy lunch-time period and she clearly didn't have any authority to do anything but bring the food out, so any and all questions/requests were met with 'I don't know?'. It's important to note that nobody knew what the table numbers were, not even the staff, so there was a lot of 'Did you order this? Did you order this?'. Having finished dinner, my 86 year old Nan had to queue in the doorway for another ten minutes to order dessert. She decided to just pay at the same time, because she didn't want to queue again and we had already been there for an inordinately long time. Another ten minutes pass before the waitress, flustered and red in the face, comes out to tell us 'It turns out we only have one brownie left'. So one of us orders an alternative, as we had already paid for a dessert. I get my brownie eventually and the other two watch me eat it. Then, in another ten minutes, their desserts show up. We finish and get the hell out before we spend the whole afternoon there. A truly amazing mess.

So sorry you had a poor experience I can only categorically apologise as we were hit with staff illnesses at the last minute and just had to fly as best we could by the seat of our pants. It is not an excuse I can assure you but we simply had to deal with what we booked had and yes the young girl did her very best but was taken out of pot wash to assist. One of those days I am afraid and I can assure you it is certainly not the norm and today we are back to our best ... What a difference a day makes. Sorry once again please come back and make yourself known and give us a chance to rectify.

Booked a table at this pub as a half way stop on way home. Love the Abbey but had never been to the village. Best description is organised chaos! We arrived and got shown to one table then moved to another, all the tables sloped. Waitress took order, barman arrived with drinks apologising about the length of time it took (about 10 mins from sitting down) our food arrived a minute later but we had no cutlery this was brought to us and we were left to eat. Chips and fish were hot, mushy peas cold but in some extremely odd way my fish was drowning in oil, but crispy, yet raw batter and raw (powdered) flour lay beneath the surface. At this point I was putting it down to COVID reopening teaching issues and when the waitress asked I explained it was more good. She asked if we would like the bill in 5 minutes… 10 mins later, and after explaining to them where their customers were now sitting as they couldn’t keep track, the same waitress asks if we want the bill. She then vanishes again for a period of time and appears back with the card machine. Would we like the bill or would we just like to pay our £30.60 bill. We opted to pay and she again asked how the food was… The music, that was too loud, was an interesting mix of tracks like I’m a Barbie Girl and people calling whoever’s phone the music was streaming from!!! About an hour after we left I get a call from the pub, we had not paid our bill. I quickly corrected and assured the man we had, luckily we had the credit card receipt to hand. The person calling them says ‘I guess we will let you off the couple of pounds under payment’ I explained they were lucky we paid what we had!! There are allowances you can make but the line was crossed with the call all but accusing us of walking out without paying. We won’t be back needless to say

Hi SusanGas72, Firstly, I want to sincerely apologise for the call you recieved - this was not handled as well as our usual customer interactions and although we have had issues with bills showing as unpaid we wouldn't expect the situation to be conveyed like this. Admittedly, we have had a rush of recruitment, and we've tried to balance training with ensuring our pubs are open and serving the increased level of customers that drove the need for new staff, but there are always improvements that can be made with training and we will certainly put in as much time and effort as possible in gettin gthis right. Our food offer has been improved alongside other changes and we hope to be able to welcome you back to experience our usual level of customer satisfaction. I'd love to have the chance to discuss this further, if you can take a moment to give us a call and ask for myself it would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Carl

Visiting Lacock for a half marathon run on a Sunday morning we booked the George Inn for lunch at 2 pm. When we arrived, no table was reserved despite having confirmation from them and we had to sit outside at a wobbly table in a rather indifferent courtyard area. The service was also indifferent - not a smile to be seen and the roast beef was very disappointing. Overcooked beef, soggy vegetables and roast potatoes that had no crisp about them. We ate up, paid up and left - all within half an hour. We shan't be back. We assumed that as the village is overseen by the National Trust, there would have been some food quality control. Rather than encouraging runners to return, this pub is playing the trick so often seen in tourist areas - they're not looking for repeat business so don't feel they have to bother. What a shame in such a beautiful area. Judging by other reviews and ratings, we're not alone in feeling this.

Hi LeoJoan, Thank you for taking the time to review our restaurant, we value all feedback provided and striving to be a successful business is only do-able with customers input. I can personally assure you that we value every customer, and encourage all guests to return - our staff love seeing a customer return and we get to know our guests whenever we can. With the marathon being the first big event in the area since the pandemic, it was difficult to predict the response as well as balance this with the issues facing the hospitality industry, but we have certainly learnt from this day and are looking forward to the next Lacock event. Improvements have been made to our food offer, and overall experience since these issues have been overcome and we hope to welcome you back in the future to show you! Many thanks, Carl

We stopped over on the off chance while visiting the village and were pleasantly surprised to find the staff helpful and understanding when one of our party needed medical gluten and dairy free food. They offered plenty to choose from so we plumped for ham, egg and chips and weren't disappointed. Large portion of ham, 2 eggs done just right and delicious chips. We sat outside in the patio where you could hear music from the kitchen and the chefs sometimes singing along, it made us forget about all the horrible stuff happening in the world and felt most relaxing.

Hi the_Devilyn, Firstly, we're so glad to have helped you forget about these troubling times for all of us! It's lovely to hear that our team can make this happen, and it's mentions like this that make our jobs so fulfilling - after all, our jobs are all about providing the best customer experience and that's what keeps us going! Although we have reduced our menu, we certainly didn't want anyone to miss out, which is why we've made sure everyone has plenty to choose from and we're glad your party could see this. Thank you again and we hope to welcome you back soon! Many thanks, Emma

We visited this pub for Sunday lunch and cannot rate it highly enough. We all had a roast dinner - nut roast, beef and lamb - all served with the biggest Yorkshire puddings I’ve ever seen, plenty of fresh veg, perfect roast potatoes and delicious gravy. We also had starters and desserts, spending more than 3 hours eating, drinking and chatting. We chose this pub as a meeting point between friends and wanted to take our time. The service was relaxed but attentive and we never felt rushed or hurried at any point. We will most definitely be back!

I drove past this pub on my way home from work and thought it would be a cute place for a double date with my sister and her boyfriend. How wrong I was. Everything came at once - starters and mains! The starters were all pretty dire…and weren’t really eaten. The mains, however, were truly disappointing. The brisket loaded fries were only really loaded with jalapeños, and barely any brisket. The fish Gounod sandwich was flavourless, the pie was bland and cold in parts with soggy pastry and the brisket sandwich was just ridiculous. Entirely filled with crispy onions with a small bit of horrendous brisket chucked in there… No one came to ask if our food was ok, I had to try to catch the attention of three different members of staff to get the bill because we’d waited about 15 minutes for our table to be cleared. We left with the plates still on the table. The glassware and cutlery weren’t particularly clean and the staff seemed uninterested in their customers needs and safety regarding COVID as none of them were wearing masks. Utterly disappointed.

Hi Seaside21554073280, Firstly, I'm very sorry for the experience you have had with us. I just want to reassure you that this is far from our usual high standards of food and service, this has all been fedback to the relevant teams to ensure it is addressed. Since your visit, as a result, we have had many compliments on our menu and have improved the kitchen regime. At all times we have been following government guidance, and encourage guests to wear masks where they would like to but this is optional. I came for lunch here with my 92 year old grandmother some weeks back and was truly disgusted by the service and catering standards. Firstly, the waitresses were rude, disinterested and lazy, showing obvious irritation towards my granny for wanting to sit by the window because a couple of glasses still needing clearing from that table. When they eventually decided to clear the table, the waitress “cleaned the table” by spraying some antibac (most of which landed on me, not the surface) and haphazardly giving it a very quick wipe, neglecting half the table and walking away with it still covered in salt and pepper mess on one side. Also, My request for a glass of water was completely ignored, despite me asking twice. Next was the food, thankfully my grandma had the fish in chips, of which she only ate the fish because her chips were cold, but she did say she enjoyed the fish (one saving grace). I however had the veggie burger which was DISGUSTING. Not as described on the menu, barely warm patty, very little in the way of toppings and best of all in a stale, cold bun. As mentioned in other reviews I’ve noticed, we left with the plates STILL ON THE TABLE. I withheld from complaining because my grandma wanted to take me out for a nice lunch and I didn’t want her to realise how terrible it had been (thankfully she’s quite unaware), but I left feeling dissatisfied, annoyed and certain I will not come back here. Seriously, sort it out, this place needs new management or some kind of staff training. I have worked in service for over 6 years and have yet to see such poor efforts.

This was without doubt the very wort Sunday Lunch we have ever had out. The Beef was overccoked , dry, hard and cold. The veg were overcooked and soggy, the gravy tasteless, the potatoes dry, wierd and hardly roasted and the yorkshires like a hard, brown, flat circular rocks. The staff were scuffy, indifferent and miserable and when one asked the appropriate question once " Is everything alright with your meal " she failed to wait for an answer. There was food on the floor too and so overall the whole experience won't be repeated as we wont be returning and suggestiong nobody we know does either. Also we didn't notice any signs saying ' No cash accepted ' ( maybe there were ) and maybe this is a Covid thing but when neither staff nor customers were wearing masks it seems a little over zellous. So when we came to pay the curt waitress said 'We don't accept cash' and when we explained that was all we were carrying she flounced off and came back to say they would accept it but would not give any change. ( We are really local and one of us could easily of popped home for a card but her attitude was so unfriendly and rude we stuck our ground) Well, they can keep the change and would suggest the manager puts it towards some uniforms, staff training or a new chef.

After a lovely walk we dropped in for refreshments and decided to have lunch. We sad out the back in partial sun which was lovely. I ordered coffee and was told they were not serving hot drinks due to the machine not working. We ordered a roast, which was tasteless and the beef was fatty and hard to cut which I had to leave. For the price that I paid was very disappointing. At the end as we were leaving a waitress came over to a couple who had eaten and were then having drinks, they were told there table was needed in 10mins and were sorry. The couple looked at us and were obviously confused. The waitress then came back out to the couple and said that they could sit at the other table if they liked ??? Confused as to why they had to move it became obvious that they wanted to place another party at their table as it was the only one in the sun!! Quite rightly they refused to stay on for another drink. I felt embarrassed for the couple and found this totally unnecessary and rude.

Hi Kelly L, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your review - it is much appreciated and we welcome all feedback. We're very glad that you were able to enjoy what sun we have left in October! I do apologise that our coffee machine broke down, it is very unfortunate when this happens but sadly due to the size of the bar we have no other facilities to make coffee if this happens - we did report this straight away though and it was fixed on the day as we of course want to keep any disruption to service at a minimum so that our guests can enjoy a hot beverage in the Winter sun! Our outside area is bookable, and guests can request certain tables as there is limited space in the courtyard, but I have spoken to the staff to ensure that this is conveyed to the customers better as we wouldn't want anyone to feel confused or disappointed by our actions. I'm very sorry to hear about the beef, this has been fedback to the kitchen to ensure this is addressed, and since your visit we have had many compliments on our beef so we'd really like to welcome you back to enjoy it! We'd very much appreciate it if you could give us a call at your convenience to discuss this further - please call 01249 730263 and if we aren't available please feel free to leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Super cute pub in a stunning location, but sadly bland and low quality food served. Went here as a treat trip for my parents and in-laws, I left feeling rather embarrassed for choosing here. They ordered a Sunday roast (chicken & beef) and what they were given was more of a half roast. The meat was very low quality, they couldn’t even cut through the beef. No meat knife available. Only carrots, potatoes and broccoli.... nothing else. The plate looked very sparse for £15!! The gravy was just bog standard Aldi tasting gravy. I felt robbed when it came to settle up the bill. They also really need to employ happy staff too, as we mainly received blank expressions, nods and grunts.

Stopped at The George Inn for lunch during a visit to Lacock on 25th October 2021. We arrived at around 2pm and were told only sandwiches were available, that was fine as we didn’t want a heavy lunch. The lady who took our order (and was behind the bar for the rest of our visit - bright red/pink hair) was very friendly and welcoming. Having taken our order she quickly returned and apologised that only one portion of ciabatta was available. Three of us duly changed our choices to the white or brown bread, supposedly farmhouse and granary, that were available. We placed a drinks order, although I only wanted a glass of water with ice, the rest of the party had beer, sparkling water and cokes. When the drinks arrived the tap water was literally lukewarm. I asked a different member of staff for the ice I’d requested, this request was ignored. And the third time she came out into the courtyard where we were seated without any I went back to the bar where the one friendly member of staff sorted me out with ice. When the food arrived the ciabatta bread was not toasted, as had been requested, and wasn’t fresh. The granary bread wasn’t granary at all but two slices of stale wholemeal bread from a sliced loaf. The white bread was I’d guess two or three days past it’s sell by date. It was stale and the edges of the bread were hard and edible. When our plates were cleared by the same member of staff who had ignored the request for ice I told her the fish had been delicious but the bread was stale and she might want to mention it to the kitchen staff, she just said ‘right’, no further comment. When the woman who seemed to be in charge (she had certainly been barking orders at the other members of staff earlier) took our payment she asked if everything had been okay, I again said the bread was stale and suggested it should be thrown out. Her response: ‘Yes it probably should be.’ I was gob smacked at such a cavalier response to a complaint and also by the fact she obviously knew that sub standard food was being served. On the plus side the fish goujons I had in my sandwich were very good, although the portion was on the mean side two goujons for the sandwich, which may have been adequate if the bread had been edible, and the chips were also very good. My apologies to the red haired waitress who didn’t get a tip from us that day but I’m afraid your sunny nature couldn’t counteract your colleagues rudeness.

We spent a nice Friday evening in The George. The food was of a high quality and there was something on the menu to suit most people. The staff were welcoming, helpful and polite and I would recommend a visit based on my experience.
