Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We made a return visit for lunch after a good lunch a couple of years ago but I’m afraid to say we won’t be returning again. The only saving grace was the staff who were very pleasant. They weren’t busy but still our starters took...45 mins to arrive. But what a disaster- the mackerel starter was inedible and was immediately sent back. No chef could have tasted that dish before sending out. The mains were a comedy of errors in terms of getting what we asked for, the salt baked celeriac wasn’t very nice to eat, the fish only slightly better, the chips over cooked. The sausages were the best meal served all day. Exceedingly disappointing. We won’t be returning.More

Gem of a hotel in the centre of the town. Fantastic overnight stay at this hotel. From start to finish. From booking in being shown to our rooms to checking out with ease. Room number 4, lovely size room with 1800 year doors windows and...beams, stunning. Bed was very comfy with quality bedding and a super soft warm duvet. Free tea, coffee and loved the homemade flapjacks. Bathroom with a bath and shower, very hot water and powerful shower, good quality towels and free toiletries. We stayed for dinner. Hats off to the chef the food is fabulous definitely recommend the faggots, venison and great red wine. What we loved was the lounge upstairs for residents to relax after dinner but before bed, really loved this space. Breakfast was plentiful, fresh and again fabulous. The staff are very attentive. I will definitely be back and will definitely recommend this hotel.More

We went for Afternoon Tea yesterday as a pre celebration for my wife’s birthday. Personally I really don’t rate Afternoon Teas based on previous experiences elsewhere. My opinion has changed though after our experience here. Lili who looked after us was amazing and the quality...of the food served by Chef was delicious. This coupled with the beautiful surroundings made for a really special afternoon. Thank you we will be back to sample your evening meals.More

Unfortunately we were a little disappointed with our Sunday roast today. Gave our orders, and the waitress must have assumed that I’d like my meat medium rare as my husband ordered for himself. When it arrived the outside layer was edible but underneath it was...more rare so I passed it to my husband. The Yorkshire puddings were a little burnt too and we lacked gravy too. We had to ask for horseradish sauce rather than be asked if we wanted any sauces which I thought was unusual. It was a hefty price tag too which left a bitter taste in my mouth., or was that the rare beef I’m not sure.More

What a lovely find! Unplanned trip to Lacock for a walk and to visit the Abbey. Had a look on line at the available food options and were impressed by the menu. Such a relaxed atmosphere and lovely surroundings. The young lady who served us...was welcoming and discreet. Both of us had the Halibut, beautifully cooked with samphire (a personal favourite) fondant potato and a light lobster cream. I would highly recommend! Other dishes passing us looked really good too. Will definitely be back.More

We didn’t get to stay as the venue neglected to tell us they were going to be closed for dinner 4 days before NYE despite previously telling that there would a tasting menu. We had to cancel to try and arrange another NYE

This used to be our special place for lunch because of the high standard of food and service. Today we were so disappointed. The food was indifferent and poorly cooked. We had to wait 30 minutes from finishing our starters to the arrival of our...main meals and that was only after one of us went to enquire as to their whereabouts. The restaurant was not particularly busy. However the young waitress who served us was polite and doing her best under what we suspected might be rather difficult circumstances. Sadly we shall not be returning or recommending.More

A wonderful location, we had a good table and the staff were friendly and kind, the beer & wine selection was good. The restaurant was clean and tidy. The main meal offerings was disappointing, the duck was over cooked, one meal had to be returned...because it was not sufficiently hot. Five of us had turkey which was bland at best, the vegetable offering was ridiculous one brussel sprout each cut in half and barely cooked, two small carrots and a couple of roast potatoes formed the bulk of the meal. The Christmas pudding was tasteless. The restaurant has so much to offer, unfortunately on the night it just didn’t deliver for the eight of us.More

The food was delicious, halibut with Samphire with a delicious sauce that needed a spoon to finish. The staff were good and it wa clear that the manager was seriously interested in people enjoying their lunch experience. We shall go again. Beautiful old building too.

Group lunch for 40 people in early December - ambience was memorable and perfect for the group. Food was faultless throughout - menu was excellent. Value for money also excellent and the service friendly and efficient. Thanks for making the lunch such a roaring success...- and thanks for the roaring fires giving such a festive atmosphere!More

Four old friends who had not seen each other for years met for lunch. The inn has so much character and the 3 dining rooms each had a fire on an autumnal day. There is no bar but we were taken to a pleasant room...with a cosy multi-burner.. There were no beers on tap but some interesting local bottled ales with monastic names and the one I had was very pleasant. A reasonable wine lis from which my wife chose an ever reliable NZ Sauvignon Blanc. Our 2 companions had soft drinks. The food menu was adequate but not extensive and sadly the homemade pie was not available. Three of us chose the house burger which came with an interesting chutney and coleslaw. Acceptable but not outstanding. Our other friend had a chicken ciabatta which was fine. The attentive and helpful waitress assured us we could linger over our coffees as long as we liked even though we had already been there over 2 hours. The inn has about five bedrooms ( not inspected) and a comfy residents lounge., again with a fire. Plenty of character which our Aussie friend loved. Helpful staff and good but not exceptional food at reasonable prices in comfortable surroundings. Exactly what we needed.More

We stayed here last year & were looking forward to our stay. The good bits- friendly welcome, friendly evening table service, lovely log burner in the dining room, delicious wine. Excellent main courses on both nights. The not so good bits- minuscule starters - these...were a joke for the price. “Portobello mushroom with celeriac” sounded promising, but was in reality three mushroom stalks with a tiny smear of pureed celeriac that needed a bit of salt and pepper to liven it up. One of the mushroom stalks was raw in the middle. Smoked Hummus with flatbread was hit and miss – we had this on the first night and it was delicious, on the second night it was literally pureed chickpeas. I suspect they had run out of hummus and quickly put some chickpeas in a blender, thinking we wouldn’t notice. The menu is not cheap and our main courses were all around the £30 mark. (I wonder if they have a plate warmer in the kitchen?) The room we stayed in (room 3) is unfortunately a little tired, I suspect a refurb is in order since they have been open for 10 years now, and I would imagine that neither the carpets or the mattresses or indeed the very thin pillows have been changed in that time. Unfortunately the bed head had a nasty stain on it. A previous guest had blotted lipstick on the room service information which gave a poor first impression. On the plus side, there was a lovely big bath with plenty of hot water. The lovely wood panelled guest lounge looks welcoming but was very chilly, and with only a fake fire that gave no warmth we did not want to linger. It’s a charming inn, full of character and I really want to come again, but hope that there has been a refurbishment by the time we next book in! Top tip, as advised by our very friendly evening waitress- request sourdough as your bread/toast at breakfast unless you like long life packet bread, which was a bit of a let down, especially given that there is a bakery next door! Service with a smile seems to be saved for the evening – sadly can’t say the same for breakfast service, perhaps this particular member of staff is just not a morning person! With a two night dinner, bed and bed and breakfast bill totalling £550, it ain’t cheap, and with a few little fixes, it will be a great destination that we would like to return to.More

We went for dinner and loved it. It's a quintessential and full of character old English pub with a very pleasant atmosphere. The food was truly extraordinary (particularly the fillet of beef), the service was spot on and very quick and professional (props to Taylor,...she was delightful). We had an amazing time and I cannot wait to go back.More
