Great Fish & Chips

Very enjoyable freshly cooked fish & chips. A shame that it is served in polystyrene boxes - not good for the environment and the food is a bit squashed. Good old fashioned paper would be better. However, will definitely visit again as can't fault the food.

We (me & Hubby) decided to get a takeaway lunch from this popular chippy today (Wednesday). We have always been satisfied with their food. The lady behind the counter served us quickly. We bought a largish portion of chips to share and a cup of tea which totalled £3.70 (contactless card payment accepted). We sat on one of the blue benches outside which was on the sunny side of the street. The traditonally cooked chips were hot and fresh.

I have just driven 90 miles

I have just driven 90 miles and having arrived hungry there is only one place I would go to get a really great fish and chips and it’s The Mermaid. Always to quality food freshly cooked and great friendly staff. Proper peas and curry and a fantastic choice of food to eat with smaller portions for the children. Seating if you need it and drinks as well however you may have to queue because the demand and the fact that they fresh fry but it’s worth the wait.

LOVELY FOOD - BUT AT A RISK!

On a recent trip to Barmouth decided to get some fish and chips for lunch. On approaching The Mermaid all looked really good, they had the social distancing marks on the floor and tape to show which way to go. There was one person in front of us just finishing their purchase so my daughter and I waited at the correct distance until he'd done. We were then called forward to place our order. There were four young people working, 2 women serving and 2 young men cooking, but there was no social distancing for them, or masks, although there was a screen. What really concerned me though, that was as soon as we'd placed our order and was in the process of paying, they called the next person and his wife forward to place theirs. There was then nowhere to social distance from them until we'd finished paying. These people also didn't seem COVID aware at all and had no issue in standing right on my shoulder! The fish and chips were lovely and we ate them along at the far end of Barmouth whilst looking at the sea, it was just a shame that The Mermaid presented that risk by not waiting that extra 60 seconds for us to finish our transaction.

1.5hr Que for dissapointment.

After waiting for 1.5hrs after having really nice fish and chips previously, to say we were dissapointed is an understatement. Chips were average, the fish batter was soggy and the fish very small and thin. Completely over priced for very average food. Won't be wasting another 1.5hrs of my life again. I wont be going back thats for sure.

Went here with my fiance for chippy tea and what a disappointment! Service was ok not friendly but efficient we ordered fish an chips an scallop and chips gravy and curry sauce. The fish tasted really nice but the gravy was watery, the curry sauce was nice, the scallop was tiny and the chips were greasy soggy an not good quality at all! Dont get why they get such a que its over priced for the quality and the quantity you get. Had much better chippys from various seaside towns wont bother wasting money again on this one!

Always great food.

We always go to this chip shop when we come away on holiday and have always enjoyed the food. Staff are great and the food is good value. They even do mini meals which are great for those with kids or a smaller appetite and are good value. There is a lot on the menu so there’s plenty of choice too. Will be back again.

Best Fish & Chips in Barmouth

Been traveling to Barmouth for some years and its always a pleasure to get there and head for this chip shop. The chips are always hot and the fish freshly cooked as the amount they sell means its never hanging around for long. Highly recommend as it starts the break off with a good wholesome meal..

Food was brilliant, wait was unnecessary

Saw a huge queue outside this gaff and decided, yep this is the spot. Queued for 40 minutes and finally got inside the shop. Now let me tell ya I don’t mind queuing, I’m English after all but when I saw the reason that we had waited so long I was a bit annoyed. The staff were taking one order at a time and completing the order before even asking what the next person was wanting. I’ve worked in successful takeaways and this way of working is just stupid. In the end the food was really good and the value for money was decent but I would have really enjoyed getting the food in under half an hour Try taking 3-4 orders at a time and having all staff working on completing orders.

Cheap as chips

Stayed at Barmouth bay caravan park. On site chippy was closed was recommended this by a staff member who said it was the best chippy in the town he wasn’t wrong . We had two fish and chips curry sauce and a sausage for the dog came to about £15 . It was a 10 minute drive back to site but the Chips were still roasting hot . The lady asked would I like the fish and chips separate I asked for them together which caused the fish batter to come off so get them separate which we did the second visit . the potato scallops are amazing best chippy ever. Staff lovely as well

Due to the Covid 19 rules

Due to the Covid 19 rules still in place. The ‘Other’ fish & chip shop involved a very long queue, so we decided to try this one. Still a queue but they were very quick in serving us all. The Fish was very fresh and a large portion, superb batter, not to thick or greasy. Chips were also great, just the way I like them. Plenty of serviettes were given to ensure that it you used the hand sanitizer then you ensure you didn’t eat it as well. Wooden forks are supplied. Opposite the Shop are several bench seats to sit on, along with bins to dispose of your leftovers and rubbish. Even the Seagulls are abiding to the social distancing rules that were in place at the time of our visit. Well worth visiting and trying fish & chips.

Absolutely delicious too notch and cheap as chips!

We are staying in barmouth for a week and on our first night wanted fish and chips by the sea. The rain had stopped so here we headed. I was a bit wary as had read some reviews talking about a lack of ppe and social distancing. In fairness it was all marked out inside to allow for a 2 metre gap and they had plastic screens up between the staff and customers. The staff did not have face masks on, but then neither did any customer make an effort to put one on (apart from me!), so don't feel it is fair to criticise them and you don't have to wear one if working in a shop anyway but visitors do! Anyway, service was really quick and friendly and the most important thing was that the fish was cooked perfectly with crunchy batter that had just the right amount of greasiness. Chips were crispy and the curry sauce was the best we had eaten. Also the price was dead cheap compared to our local chippy in Surrey!

Called in late afternoon 23/09/20 for a pie and chips and a small fish and chips. I was duly served but when I got back to my car which was outside I saw that most of what I had purchased appeared to have been 'thrown' into the plastic carrier bag and the small fish and chips container had opened leaving the contents in the bag and copious amounts of vinegar running about. The shop was certainly not busy and I do feel that 3 small poly containers could have been placed into the carrier bag with a little more thought. The food was OK if you like it having had a journey around the inside of a plastic bag. VERY DISAPPOINTED with the service received.

We Had a take away on Saturday and I have to say it’s the best one I’ve had from the mermaid since I’ve been eating here, chips was perfectly cooked fish was massive and the boneless chicken breast was amazing .. Honestly the chicken is a must and are massive... Nice to be served with a smile by Lauren and dan the super chef that’s the one with the silly haircut 🙊🤣

After a coastal walk we decided to treat ourselves to a local favourite and one that we have frequented often over the years. Well what a disappointment.Portion sizes are ridiculous. The polystyrene contaiers are probably the smallest available in the industry?! ideal for the owner who obviously cares more about profit than providing value for money. I'm not expecting masses of food, just decent portion sizes. Yes, I understand there are hoardes/queues in busier periods but lets not ignore that this Chippy needs to get back to basics and seriously look at a plan of providing true value for money rather than ripping people off. For now, we shall not be returning. From experience in life nothing will change from this honest posting. One thing positive is that we shall no longer be joining the long queues and face such humility with such little to show for the money spent
