Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed in The Hampton Inn a few doors down and walked to Val's not knowing what we were getting into. Best food in the San Francisco area and the dining highlight of our week touring the coast. I started with the delicious French onion soup...and then ordered the filet with mashed potatoes, savory gravy (yum) and mixed vegetables (with asparagus!): 10/10. Husband ordered the clam chowder (he says it had lots of VERY tender clams and was the best in San Fran and we had it at 4 other nice restaurants!) and the linguini with clams. He's a chef and he was blown away with the sauce and the dish - he was tempted to use bread to get every last drop. Our server, Will, was perfect: attentive, friendly, informative and always available but never intrusive. The restaurant has an old-fashioned charm. Make reservations so that you don't miss out. We will go again....and again...More

Nice restaurant with good food. The feeling you get when entering is that the restaurant has been around for a long time. The menu offerings are mainly Italian and steak house fare. The food was very good, and the wait staff friendly and attentive.

Good comfort food, old time environment, good friendly service. Good spot when you need a good meal with little wait. Consistently satisfies.

I have eaten here several times but have not reviewed it. This is a hard call because, in many respects, Val's is a dinosaur. It is a neighborhood restaurant that has been around for 50 years, the decor probably has not changed much, and I'd...bet the menu has not changed much either. I love the neighborhood restaurant aspect of it; some, maybe most, would not. If you are looking for a hip, Millennial or GenX place, stay away. This is not your place. The food is mixed. I can tell you that you will get a lot of it and the doggie box will likely be tomorrow's dinner. My petite fillet was as large as a normal-sized fillet and it was perfectly done. Julie ordered the chicken and got a platter-full of crispy fried chicken. Both were delicious. We have never had a bad entree here. Prices are very reasonable given the portions. And they have veal which is very hard to find. The sides and soups are, unfortunately, just ordinary. Minestrone and French onion soup, just m'eh. Julie's buttermilk mashed potatoes and corn were just OK. Same for the biscuits. My scalloped potatoes and broccoli were just OK. They were all kinda cooked like my Mom would make them in the 1960's. But, as I said, the portions were huge. The service was fine. I think that many of the wait staff have been there for a long time. And, I should say, the bread was awesome! So, even though we are foodies, we will continue to eat at Val's after we see a movie at the Daly City cinema. It is a throwback to the neighborhood restaurants of old. I remember several restaurants like these when I was in DC in the 1970's and 1980's, and so it is comfort food to me (and to Julie.) If you want to experience what that was like, go to Val's. I cannot say that you will like it, but I can say with certainty that it is 100% authentic.More

If you love a good steak and martini, in a place that has a solid wood antique bar and prices that feel like they are from the same era as the furnishings you will love this place like I did!

I had high hopes for Val’s but they were dashed. I love places with a lot of local character. And Val’s has that in spades. It’s clear that this is the type of place couples and families have visited over the years and will continue...to do so for years to come. The room takes a swing at upper class but misses pretty bad. The room is just tired. Our server was a touch curt. She had an edge, but we were well taken care of. They had chicken parm, and I love my chicken parm, so I dived in. It was one of the worst chicken parms I’ve ever had. Maybe in the top 3 worst. But in fairness, my dining partner has the veil and he enjoyed it. So I’ll give the food the benefit of the doubt. My wedge salad was also a disappointment, as was the salty bacon and shrimp appetizer. This place has a true locals feel, so I’d come back again for the swarmy atmosphere and perhaps try a steak.More

We have been going to Vals for 40 years. We have never once been disappointed! So few family-owned places like this left anywhere! You see two and three generations here having dinner together, the menu has always been great, and there are always some extra...'specials. Lunch or dinner, couples, families, or celebrating something... Val's will always make it more enjoyable!More

Although we went there for a late afternoon bday lunch, to avoid the crowd, "we were not impressed with the service or the food." The service was much worse than the food. Jessie flunked every aspect of customer service & satisfaction. He never came around...to check on us, He didn't honor my request to inform my father, who is blind of his presence or placement of plates/drinks. It was horrible, horrible service. Never, Never again!!!More

I’ve been going to Val’s for over 30 years and it hasn’t changed much which is a good thing. As you walk in, you enter the bar which makes you thing of a true saloon. You can eat in the bar area, which has four...big screen TVs. Great for watching sports. You can also eat in the dining room which is quieter and good for conversation. They have a great big room in the back for private events, and they do an outstanding job with their buffet dinners. The chef has been on the job for over 25 years and continues to developed interesting specials. The Sunday special of fried chicken is delicious and served family style. Quite a bargain for all of the food you get. Their steaks and chores are plentiful for the price and their prime rib is wonderful. Definitely a point of destination if you’re looking for a full belly.More
