The restaurant is immaculate. Well lit, good room between tables so you can have enjoyable conversations, music that was not overpowering. However, we had to wait 30 minutes beyond our reservation time to be seated. We were offered a drink as compensation, but did not want liquor, just a good meal. The service was very slow, and the appetizers for... More

The ambiance of this restaurant was amazing. Next time I am in the area I will visit again. It is on the expensive side, but WELL worth it. I did make reservations because we had a large party, but the place filled up quickly. The food was AMAZING!

Been coming here for close to 20 years now. Love having an early dinner sitting at the bar they always have some infused vodka pineapple etc which is always delicious and they make a great cucumber martini! They have totally redone the main dining room and made it more casual looking with dark green chairs but we were a little... More

What a nice meal for a last evening in Venice Beach. Very tasty food. One of the dishes did come a few minutes after the other but that's the only negative. Our server, a charming guy of Japanese origins, was friendly and helpful.

We have been going to Chaya Venice for the past 13 years, and it has always been great. This saturday night however, sadly was the last time for us. Whatever remodeling they did to the place, has fallen short. The menu has changed, and not for the better. I ordered sea bass, which had an extremely fishy taste that would... More

My wife & I just had dinner at Chaya Venice with our son & his fiance. It had newly opened (from remodeling?). The experience was fair-to-good. A number of small details need to be fixed and I assume they will be in the near future. The host was an older, long-term Chaya Venice waiter who was gracious and accommodating. Our... More

Very good traditional restaurant with a good sushi menu as well. We've been here often and have always liked it. Don't let the hobo-ballerina stop you. The atmosphere inside is great.

Have not been to Chaya in about 6 years. Stopped in on a Wednesday night and had dinner. Service was good and fast. The food was good different menu which was disappointing so stayed with Sushi. Always a fun scene and good food and fun people watching. They are a little over priced, but I recommend this as a standard... More

We were recommended this restaurant by friends and were not disappointed. There is a dinner menu which is very convenient at $49 and the starter of seafood (oysters, bursts, salmon) was excellent as were the ahi tuna and beef as mains. The wine list is extensive and very diverse with reasonable options. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere quite lovely... More

This corner is like a relic, and odd throwback to the 90's...maybe earlier. While the location is prime, and service remains dependable, the shine is long gone and the inside a bit tarnished. While the food is typically fresh, the offerings seem a bit forced and "classic California", and they seem to suffer from the how much for how much... More

Description
The Chaya restaurant family originated when Hikage Chaya opened in Hayama, Japan. From this initial tea house, that opened 390 years ago, the Tsunoda family has expanded into French bistros and pastry shops throughout Japan and introduced the brand to the U.S. in 1984 with the opening of Chaya Brasserie in Beverly Hills. Since then, Chaya has opened locations in Venice, San Francisco, Downtown Los Angeles, and LAX. The cuisine at each restaurants can best be described as modern Japanese though each restaurant has a distinct personality reflecting their different locations. Corporate Executive Chef, Shigefume Tachibe is best known for pioneering modern Japanese cuisine and his contributions to the Asian-Fusion movement. His chef coat and knife are in permanent display in the Smithsonian. The most important tenet of Chaya's philosophy is high-level omotenashi (hospitality), bringing the Japanese teahouse tradition of warm and personal service to each guest.

Staying in Venice

Neighbourhood Profile
Venice
Venice has always danced to its own beat as the epicenter of bohemian culture in Los Angeles. Along the boardwalk there are street performers and local craftsmen selling their wares. Original paintings, souvenirs, and jewelry are on display. Crowds of visitors marvel at the sites while weightlifting enthusiasts pump iron in plain view, and skateboarders do their tricks around the skate park. All of it happens under the warm California sun with sprawling views of sand and sea. Heading east, the main drags of Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Main Street are lined with boutique shops, some major retail stores, art galleries and restaurants. Here the ambiance is more relaxed and upscale than the frenetic boardwalk area. Venice is a mostly walkable (and certainly bikeable) neighborhood, full of areas to explore.
