This restaurant on Franklin Ave is right next to the Highland Gardens Hotel. I was recommended by our hotel staff. Drive up the hill and have drinks. Beautiful Japanese Gardens with a fantastic view of the city. We drove up during the day and you get a fantastic view of the HOLLYWOOD sign, downtown LA and the rest of the city... More

My wife and I went to Yamashiro's to celebrate our Anniversary. We hadn't been there in years and had heard it was under new ownership. What a let down.Yes,there is the great view of the city and the ambience is nice, but it all stops there. The pro's are the view and atmosphere. The con's are really slow service (although the staff is really nice)... Met a friend for drinks and the ambience is fabulous. The food presentation looked great, although we didn't dine. A bit awkward to find, but worth it.

Let's start from the best part : the view is astonishing. The restaurant located on the hill near Hollywood. Moreover, there is a great design, but the food is just OK. The price is big, but, however, you are not paying for high-quality and tasty food.

Another great restaurant! Awesome view of the city, lovely garden in the center of the restaurant, nice ambiance. When you make your reservation you have two great choices: the Japanese garden area (no city view) or the city view area by the window (not near the garden). For those of you with poor vision in dark places, be prepared to... More

Based on other Trip Advisor reviews, came expecting spectacular views and good, but not great food. With the exception of an exceedingly rude and indifferent hostess, the entire experience was amazing! Everyone in my family ordered very different meals and one was better than the other. Of note, the Reclining Buddha sushi roll was outstanding! If they replace the skinny... More

I grew up in Hollywood not very rich but on my way to school I could see Yamashiro. When I was young I didn't know it was a restaurant. Then when I found out that it was I always thought I could never afford to eat there. Then at some point it closed down, when I heard it was open... More

Went here for our anniversary on a Monday night. Requested a window seat and received it (We had an early evening reservation). Wonderful crispy salmon entree. Old Hollywood feel. Make sure to walk through the tiered garden. Great place to take out of town visitors. Nice for locals like us, too, who too often forget about this unique place amidst... More

Location and Contact Information
  • Address: 1999 N Sycamore Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90068-3782
    (Franklin Avenue)
  • Public Transportation: Metro Red Line to Hollywood & Highland. Walk west down Hollywood Blvd turn right on Orange and cross at the light on Franklin. Once you cross at the light go left and turn right at sycamore going up the hill. It is a very steep hill so walking in dress shoes or in the dark are not recommended. We suggest calling a cab at the bottom of the hill.

Description
Yamashiro - translated to "mountain palace" - broke ground in 1911 and was completed in 1914 as a residence for the Bernheimer brothers. Housing a priceless collection of Asian treasures, the building was designed as a replica of a palace located in the mountains near Kyoto, Japan. During the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, Yamashiro served as the ultra-exclusive hang-out for the "Club of the Four Hundred": the era's most famous and influential stars and movie moguls. The structure and its grounds served as a boy's military school and later apartments before being acquired in 1948 by the Thomas O. Glover, who discovered the beauty beneath the disrepair and refurbished the space. Currently owned by Thomas Y. Glover, Yamashiro is still flourishing over 60 years later as an Asian-inspired Los Angeles institution.
