This tavern has been closed down due to bad management. It was always empty. Sometimes in the summer they'd have live music but only half the year. The beer was reasonably priced.

My wife and I kind of stumbled on this place, and came here every night we were in Mariposa. Good, no-frills food, cold beer, sports on TV, great live music. Great slice of Americana, and staggering distance back to the hotel. Awesome.

The restaurant is partly bar and partly restaurant, but the food is better than in an avarage bar. We took fish&chips, prawns and some chicken as well. Each of plates were tasty as the salads and soups too. The price level is avarage, but the...More

A quaint little tavern with a decent menu but unfortunately the risotto, fish and chips and the pancetta chicken were all unavailable. Friendly staff and extremely accommodating with everything else we needed. My husbands steak was nice and I had the salmon which was very...More

On our way to Yosemite we were staying in Mariposa and found this place to have lunch. The place looks as you would expect in this area, lots of wood and a central bar. Clientele mostly locals, I guess because it's outside the tourist season....More

The food options included typical tavern fair and well as steaks and fish dishes. The food was fine but nothing special.

Description
The “story” of the modern Gold Coin Restaurant and Tavern is very complex. I guess the history of the “Coin” and its home in the old Fremont Adobe is not simple either. That’s why the term “Where History Lives” is most appropriate.Linda, and her sister Betty, had a dream. A Sports Tavern in Mariposa. Several years ago, Betty was killed in a motorcycle accident and Linda decided to fulfill their dream. Then it happened! She talked with Helen Kwalwasser, who was restoring the old Fremont Adobe building, built in 1849-50, as the headquarters for the Las Mariposas mining properties, has a colorful past. The original “Gold Coin Bar” was originally established shortly after prohibition ended, by the Greenamyer brothers with proceeds from their lucky strike at the old Gold Coin Mine in northern Mariposa County. After being abandoned for more than 20 years, Helen took on the massive task of restoring this historic Mariposa icon. All she needed was a tenant and along came Linda. The “Coin” is like no other dining and beverage experience in the Mother Lode area; perhaps in the West. The atmosphere gives the “historic” feel of the time when this building was in its prime. The gold mines are gone with little to remind us of this colorful part of our western heritage but the “Coin” is here and thriving! There are those who say that the “spirits” of those early pioneers, prospectors and minors are still among us. We won’t argue. We think that those spirits are alive and well and have played a major role in why the “Coin” is what it is today! As Bob likes to say, we are the “brush” and I can only suspect who is controlling the “hand”!
