Glen Bell worked at a burger joint in front of Mitlas 70 years ago and noticed customers lining up for an "American taco" made with crispy shell, ground beef, grated yellow cheese, fresh lettuvce and salsa. Seeing the success of McDonalds, he got a job i the Mitla kitchen and then went and launched Taco Bell. A trip here is... More

This restaurant has been family-owned since its founding in 1937, and my family have been regular customers since 1947. It is straightforward good food, nothing particularly exotic, just plain good. You can't go wrong: homemade tortillas, delicious enchiladas, a ground beef taco that is better than any you can find anywhere, I could go on and on. Give it a... More

If you want a classic Hwy 66, Mom and Pop (make that Madre y Padre) Mexican cafe you have it here. It's one of those drive-right-past places in an area not on the chain restaurant loop. The place is like stepping back in time, a cool vibe. The food is unpretentious but hearty, very authentic, and the service is wonderful.... More

We only stopped for coffee as we were on a tight time schedule but wished we could have eaten there. The food we saw looked very appetising. The staff we very friendly and made us very welcome.

SO I am almost 60 years old and have been coming to Mitlas since I was born. Over the years our family has narrowed down the menu to our favorite. There is only one dish I get and everyone in my family gets it. It is the Peggy Special. It is sooooo good!!! Comes with a salad and we of... More

Had always been a great place for great authentic Mexican food, but lately they have lost their touch, running out of food, not offering good service, forgetting orders, just terrible experience, so disappointed, might have to wait a long time, before trying again.

This is a lively restaurant and although it's on a tourist trail, it's full of locals too. Service was friendly and fast, and the food was really enjoyable: great value, filling and tasty. The menu had a decent selection of dishes including daily lunch specials, and we were served good sized portions. Families and small groups also seemed very welcome... More

Salsa was great. Chips, pretty good. The Carne Asada meat was pretty scary, quality wise. Again with the cheddar cheese all over the beans. Gross. My buddy had the combo plate and it was the same. French fries were served with the carne asada plate and they had to have been sitting in grease at least an hour. My stomach... More

Really good mexican food in and authentic setting. A lot of route 66 decoration. Good friendly staff. Lots of local hispanics present.

Mitla Cafe is one of the Inland Empire's most historic eateries for two entirely different reasons. First, it is arguably the oldest IE Mexican restaurant - starting as a classic on Route 66. Second, its tacos were the inspiration for Taco Bell (cf. TACO USA by G. Arellano). History alone is a good enough reason to do the Mitla Pilgrimage.... More
