Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Welcomed by a roaring log fire, helpful and attentive staff, we enjoyed a fabulous meal of, platter of sharing home made bread with olives, then rack of locally sourced lamb with a herb crust, which was perfection, and delicious choux pastry desert with chantilly cream...and salted caramel, the food is superbly presented, and there’s a selection of fine wines or Devon ales and ciders to accompany any choice from the menu. A great atmosphere, excellent service, a good menu with something for everyone, what’s not to like about this place. Highly recommended, definitely 5 Star!More

Excellent Sunday Lunch. Table service, excellent food, with the chef coming out to say hello. Absolutely perfect. Many thanks.

Stopped in here for a meal with friends who have been before. When we arrived the place had a warm atmosphere. The menu is quite small but there’s something for most people. The service was excellent and the waitress was very attentive. The starters are...a good size and as for the main course the steak was excellently cooked and the lamb burger was delicious. Highly recommendedMore

Took my girlfriend here for a meal last week. Food was cooked very well, but they were only child's portions. (For £20) I complained that I was served just half a potato, cut into four pieces. If I wanted a work of art, I would...go to the Tate Modern. I wanted a meal. Chef said no one had complained before. Well I am the first. I came into this pub hungry. I left hungry and went for a takeaway. If you want a meal, I suggest you go anywhere else!More

This pub was recommended when we were on holiday in the area. We booked for a Saturday evening that was not busy at 7:00 pm. The service was extremely slow and poor, we had to chase up our starters after 1 hour of waiting ,...then having waited a further 1 hour for our main courses, we gave up and left.More

This is a lovely old pub in a pretty village in mid Devon. It was bought by a French chef 5 yrs ago and his food is delicious. We stayed for 2 nights in pretty awful weather, but the woodburners were wonderful, the welcome from...the amazing Karen was warm and her energy throughout the night, serving both bar and restaurant food, was incredible, all with a cheerful personality. Nico brought his food to the table with a welcoming smile. I'm gluten free and was well catered for. We'll definitely be back. A good place to break a journey to west Cornwall.More

Accidentally came across this pub earlier this year whilst looking to buy a house. We now live in the village and have been several times, latest visit was with visiting family. One member has been to a number of 4 and 5 star mitchelin restaurants....She said it was better than the mitchelin restaurant food. I just know it’s absolutely stunning food in a quaint pub with the nicest staff. My all time favourite place to eat.More

We ate there for the 3rd time recently last night. Every time the food has been superb and between us and our dining companions we’ve trawled much of the menu. Always beautiful presented and wonderfully tasty. The service does seem to depend on whose working....Last night was not great, over an hour and a half before any food appeared in front of us and it wasn’t that busy. Previous visits the service has been fine though. Don’t turn up starving as we did, just in case it’s an off night but we’ll be back over and over againMore

Really impressed with the standard of food. Had three courses on a Sunday. To start nduja scotch egg with homemade chutney, scotch egg was runny in the middle and slightly spiced 👌 chutney delicious and full of flavour. Sunday roast was well seasoned parsnips, colly...cheese and roast potatoes done well. Pots crispy, parsnip a little crispy with sweetness colly cheese indulgently cheesy. I had belly pork, again very well seasoned the only thing I would say it missed was some crackling. Otherwise perfect. Desserts were original showed technical skill and also (the main thing) were delicious. This was surprisingly cheap and the food easily rivals restaurants that hold two rosettes. The service was casual warm and friendly. Will recommend and go again.More

We booked an overnight stay with dinner to break up our journey to the south coast. We arrived early, and whilst our room was ready, we enjoyed a couple of pints before checking in. Room was clean and comfortable and the service throughout our stay...was excellent. Evening menu gave good selection of dishes, all that we tasted were beautifully cooked and presented. Breakfast was also well done. Special thanks to Karen and Katie who made our stay one to remember and recommend.More

Wonderful food and a great selection of wines. The duck was beautifully cooked, and the local cheeseboard was modest – never any need for an enormous cheeseboard after a good meal! – but brilliant quality. Glad we persevered with booking dates and times, as they...were fully booked for our first two choices.More

Booked a table, arrived on time, and didn’t get a drink, a menu, or a friendly hello in 30 mins, so we left. The staff appeared to be having a melt down, and lots of customers appeared to have no food and were looking at...their watches.More

This evening was the last night of our holiday - we ate no lunch today and were very hungry, yet wanting something special to celebrate. Well, we found it. An interesting menu, beautiful food beautifully cooked and prepared, lovely presentation. The service was friendly and...professional. We ate crab with wasabi ice cream (gorgeous) and a mozzarella salad (all that one would hope for). We both had duck breast as a main (perfect) and moelieux for pudding (light, fluffy, chocolatty georgeousness). We will be back - thank you all for a perfect evening.More
