My husband, my sister and I traveled all the way from the Caribbean to visit Jane Austen House and eat at this place. Then the waitress ruined our visit. As soon as she saw us come inside the pub her gestures were very, very disrespectful (pounding bar table in anger) especially when we asked for a table. She seemed bothered... More

Mediocre food at high end price. It is very clear that this pub is not looking for repeat business from local customers but instead are pricing their food at the high end and unfortunately the food that was served was of a very low standard. £11 for ham, egg and chips and I have had way better for half the... A group 14 of us had lunch here after visiting Jane Austen's house. We were greeted courteously and orders taken immediately for drinks- followed by food orders. Everyone I asked had enjoyed their meal- all the plates I saw looked good. On my table of 4 , we all had different but all enjoyed. My chili con carne was absolutely... More

A friend booked a table for the 2 of us last Thursday evening. Got there at 7pm and were seated. There were quite a few others eating but it didn't look overly busy. We were not offered drinks or given a menu, had to ask for that 20 mins later. They didn't have any alcohol free larger which was disappointing.... More

Have read the recent reviews, and it does seem that one or two things have gone wrong. All I can say is that everything was fine for us, and the steak pie is to die for!

Visited here a couple of years back and it was really good. However, on my recent visit with friends, I was disappointed. Had a lovely reserved seat by the warm fire, which was great, but several of the choices on the menu were not available as also was a glass of particular beer which was ordered. Then we had a... We are sorry this party and the one below (the same party we think) had a poor experience with us. It was indeed out of character for us. The previous night the village had a prolonged power cut, which we found on the Thursday morning had crashed the till system. The Pub Manager, who is also the Chef, therefore had... More

Having been here before with friends and enjoyed a good meal we had no hesitation in returning. Big mistake. Asked what beers on draft made my choice but oops sorry run out. No problem these things happen. Four of us dining - placed our orders but then oops two out of the four choices had run out! - Thursday lunchtime!... More

Popped in on the off chance at 2.15pm after a long cold dog walk. Bit disappointed in the tired decor and the fact that the first bottle of wine we ordered was not in stock.. Nor was the second bottle, OR the third bottle and ridiculously neither was the FOURTH bottle !! How can a pub have the first 4... More

Had lunch here with my wife after walking. My wife had smoked haddock with mustard sauce, which she found very well balanced and tasty. I had lamb shank in Burgundy sauce, but unfortunately I was unable to taste anything but mint sauce, which completely swamped all other flavours. That said, the lamb was very tender and the green beans were... More

Just opposite the Jane Austin Museum house the Greyfriar is a an ideal location for lunch or dinner. It's a Fullers pub so has good beer and the staff are friendly. Good car parking only a few yards away. A good pub menu offers main meals and lighter fare. The sandwiches are a good size. Try the fish finger sandwich.... More
