This place is the real deal. Step off the street and step back a couple hundred years. Bar area has a great nautical theme. Terrific sailboat photos/paintings everywhere you look. The ambiance is something you will not find anywhere else. Lunch menu was extensive and the food was great. Bar area is very cool with a good selection. If you... More

Eating in the main room you have a hundred photos of the old sailing ships, awesome food! excellent service but the price to match all this. At times we have eaten in the other dining rooms too and each has a different feel to it but always like you stepped back in time. The old books in the library are... More

I am local to the area, though I was in Santa Barbara, CA for 18 years. This in is the oldest in the United States- Est. in 1776. YOU Need to visit this establishment. Not crazy about the food, Hunt Menu. But, great bar food, ambiance, etc. Go---

Excellent food, great service. Fun surroundings, and there was good entertainment the night we were there.

Each couple drove half-way to go to the "Gris" for lunch on a Tuesday between Christmas and New Years. Luckily we made a reservation for 12:30pm. It was absolutely needed. Lots of couples, families, business folks waiting to get in. Hadn't been to the "Gris" in years as we had moved away. Staff was attentive and friendly. Food was delightful.... More

Went here for drinks and food kind of on a whim. We were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed our visit. We had small plates of the fig pizza, braised beef, risotto and pan seared scallops. All excellent! The scallops were especially outstanding with the bacon and Brussels sprouts. Our drinks were made to perfection. I loved our time here and look... More

Went for lunch and got the grilled chicken on focaccia, it was ok. The clam chowder had good consistency but lacked clams and clam flavor. The server was a teenager and seemed not to be interested in being there, service was sub par. The building itself is beautiful, if the ambience matched the food and service, I would give it... Always wanted to go here for dinner. Was disappointed that we were put at a small table in the library and no other patrons nearby. Great food, but would have loved to be by the fireplace

We live in town and the only time we go is when an out of state friend "insists" that they have to treat us to a meal there. Food is mediocre. Ambience is very good. Some service is a bit wacky. Friends wanted to go to the wine bar. One in the group wanted a mixed drink and had to... More

Located in the “storybook” village of Essex mere steps from the Connecticut River, this 1776 landmark offers three distinct dining experiences. “Historic Dining” is offered in four handsome rooms - The Covered Bridge, The Gun Room, The Library and The Essex Room – where a renowned maritime art collection fills the walls. The Inn’s New England heritage and connection with the sea is apparent in the classic seasonal cuisine offered; diners may enjoy a more contemporary culinary experience in the stunning wine bar featuring tapas-style dining and an extensive selection of wines by the glass; tavern fare is offered in the atmospheric, award-winning Tap Room where lively music rings out nightly. Patio dining is an option May through October, weather permitting. Lunch and dinner served daily, Hunt Breakfast on Sunday.
