About
The picturesque village of Car Colston has 29 acres of village greens and is believed to be the largest rural common in England. The building of The Royal Oak is about two hundred years old and is thought by some to have been a hosiery factory hence the rather unusual vaulted brick ceiling in the bar which certainly would have carried the weight of the appropriate textiles machinery above.Richard & Vicky are members of the British Institute of Innkeeping. With Vicky offering her delicious culinary delights from the kitchen & Richard behind the bar with his fantastic tasting Cask Marque approved traditional real ales you are sure of a warm welcome and enjoyable experience but look out for the reported ghost of a Roman Centurion roaming the building.

The Green at Car Colston is worth a visit. It's huge. A really interesting village setting, not far from the A46 in the heart of England. The Royal Oak pub on the Green at Car Colston is a friendly local pub with a great range of food and drinks. It's worth booking in advance if you want a table for a meal, even if that's just a phone call when you're on route to ensure that when you get there you can be seated. There's a good range of vegan and veggie options. I really enjoyed my meal. My guest said he wanted a bit more vegan curry with his rice. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We didn't have room for desserts, so I do think the main course was plenty.

A proper traditional old pub with a warm welcome the moment you enter. The young lady that served us was very polite and offered to bring drinks to the table. I have to say that for a Tuesday lunchtime in the middle of winter it was surprisingly busy with lunchtime trade. Lovely big car park to accommodate all. The meals my friend and I had were both tasty hot and clearly homemade. All the other meals I saw come out were also very appetising especially the fish and chips which I will definitely give a try. The food was good value, we followed up with delicious coffees, a first time visit for my friend and I but hopefully not the last.

When booking i asked for a warm table by the heaters and that's exactly what we got which was good as there are only 2 heaters for the marquee. 3 of us had Salads 2 Salmon and Prawn and 1 had hand carved Ham. The salads were fabulous served in beautiful bowls with large portions the ham was carved in two thick slices and was gorgeous. The other meal was off the specials board, sweet and sour chicken and was also delicious. We also shared a bowl of Sweet potato fries which were also delicious. We followed up with 3 portions of Lemon meringue pie and cream and a chocolate and praline cheese cake. The service was excellent and the meal was very good value fore money and i would highly recommend it.

It was great to see everyone at the Royal Oak. The welcome was as warm as ever. Covid precautions were in place but weren't intrusive. The pub has always been neat and clean, and it felt safe to be in today as well. We had a lovely meal. The fish pie was packed with fish in a tasty sauce, with just the right amount of mashed potato on top. Lots of places skimp on the fish and are lavish with the potato. The Royal Oak gets the balance just right. Portion sizes were generous without being unmanageable. The landlord and his team are attentive but not intrusive; they're always very welcoming. We look forward to going again soon.

Meeting up with 6 old school mates from over 50 years ago, this pub was recommended by one of them. It proved to be ideal. In a beautiful location, overlooking a huge village green, the Royal Oak offers first of all a warm welcome from the landlord and his staff. Then, having chosen a well kept and served real ale from the plentiful selection on offer, the menu gives a wide choice from steaks, salads, fish & chips, fish pie etc. All in our party were more than satisfied with the quality and quantity of food chosen. I’m fussy about where I eat and particularly about real ale, and would not hesitate to recommend this place - I will certainly be returning!

This was my 3rd visit to this fantastic pub on the strong recommendation of my parents who visit it regularly. As soon as you walk in, you see the two roaring log fires, full tables (Tuesday lunch) and lots of happy people. Getting a table here even on a Tuesday lunch isn’t too easy. With many other village pubs locally either closed early in the week or struggling to get the punters, the Royal Oak could probably fill their tables 3 x times over! It’s easy to see why this place appeals, the welcome from the owner Richard is welcoming, the food is just classic pub food but cooked very well and is great value in these times where prices are constantly on the rise. The service is superb which again is refreshing in todays world of hospitality. We will be back as will everyone else we saw today, so book early to avoid disappointment. Congratulations to all the team there.

It's been a while since we had Sunday lunch at this popular venue so booked for a birthday lunch. Greeted at the door with a smile from our fragrant host and escorted to our spotlessly clean table. We enjoyed a perfectly cooked Sunday lunch with crisp roast potatoes and tasty gravy. The lamb, beef and chicken were tasty and tender. The meal, the ambience and the attentive host ticked all our boxes. Our guests, on their first visit here, were very impressed and envious of us being so close to such luxury.

We visited on a Monday lunchtime and both food and service were excellent. I had the blue stilton and mushroom pasta, which was the best ever tasted. Absolutely delicious. The soup was good too. The menu was very comprehensive with plenty of choices for vegetarians and not just the usual boring stuff either. The pub interior is warm and welcoming with a distinctly country feel to it. It has a very good beer garden both to the front and side and also space to sit out the back to. The pub is in a lovely location on the village green and also lovely views over the vale of Belvoir at the back. Look forward to going back soon.

Staff are so welcoming and friendly. Food is delicious and was happy with a smaller dish option, however I did feel envious when I saw the bigger dish! Will definitely visit again after another walk around the area. Family and dog friendly. Also felt very safe visiting under Covid regulations too.

My partner and I wanted to take his elderly father out for lunch and we settled upon the Royal Oak due to its no-nonsense, "good honest pub food" menu. Between us we tried the lasagne, the fish pie and the treacle sponge, all of which were delicious. We were made to feel very welcome at the pub and we would happily return and sample further home-cooked dishes from the menu in future.

After looking for somewhere central to meet up with friends I booked a table at The Royal Oak and was so pleasantly surprised. I can’t fault the amazing welcome and customer service. The staff were attentive, cheery and so polite! The extensive choice of sandwiches, Jack potatoes and side dishes was complimented with pies, curries and salad - so there was something for everyone. If I had one minor comment it was that the vegetarian selection was a little limited - might have been nice to a feta salad or couscous but despite this I would definitely revisit!

After reading the reviews and being recommended by a friend we managed to get a table in the bar area for me and my wife. I had the Pork and my wife had the Lamb. On the plate was 4 very good sized roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and 4 very thick slices of meat. Then we were brought a bowl of veg, broccoli, carrots and cauliflower, and a lovely thick gravy. Food was delicious, more than enough. Pork £11.95,Lamb £12.95. Very friendly staff, nice open fire on. You need to book!!

We go to eat here most weeks and have never been disappointed with the quality or choice of the food. The staff are wonderful and make you feel really welcome. It is always warm and welcoming with the log burner shining brightly. The food is home made and delicious. We have booked for a Christmas lunch so are looking forward to that. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Really sorry to say the vegetarian meal I had was very poor. The burger was dry and bland, with no sauce, salad or anything. It was literally just the dry burger and bread. I was shocked they would serve that and it was really strange they then brought out some plain vegetables, that just didn’t go. Really odd that they think this is an acceptable standard.

Hi Rachel, Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention via Tripadvisor! If I had known about this issue whilst you were here I could have gladly rectified the situation as customer happiness is our ultimate goal. Were you not asked if you would like any cheese? (cheddar, stilton or vegan cheddar) as this should have been the case. Our staff offer a selection of sides for you to decide upon when placing the order hence the vegetables rather than salad. Please accept my apologies for your upsetting meal, I will be looking into this further to see if staff training needs re-addressing. Kind regards Rich

The very rural setting, the traditional English pub decor, an ambiance created by a full house and a team that I can only describe as excellent from arrival to departure, made this a visit and a lunch to remember. The menu is classic pub food and was very good value and delicious. I just wish I lived in the village and could go every day!!!!
