First discovered in 1977 and always been on my highly recommended and go to list. I want to book the Oak for our wedding anniversary. Before booking, I saw some alarming reviews. Being in the trade, I chose to keep an open mind and booked....Noted on arrival. Very busy outside and in the bar area on arrival.
Decor - Good as always,
Menu - Always was something you enjoyed looking at and having to work out from the choice of meals, which you were going to plump for. Now, small font, bland menu of much less choice that leaves you looking for something interesting to consume.
Service - Nothing wrong with the service but then again, nothing more than the bare minimum. The one defining point was that I ordered a pint of late red after the bland hop pocket. Out came another hop pocket which was politely declined having repeated my order for late red. Correct beer arrives promptly followed five minutes later by another hop pocket. That is potentially, two wasted pints of beer. Not good for the GP.
Meal observations -Cheesy garlic bread starter good, thankyou.
Burger and fries ordered . That is it, burger and a beaker of fries. Most burgers these days have an onion ring or two to bulk the plate up. Still, we did order burger and fries.
After all of my disappointment at the reading of the menu, I ordered the chili crock pot, remembering the meal that used to be legendary at the Oak. If if was two thirds the size it used to be, that was an exaggeration. cast iron cauldron, 2/3rds of which was rice with a bit of melted cheese on top causing the rice to have an 'overcooked' texture. Don't get me wrong, the chili element was lovely. Four wrapped tortillas about 5 inches in diameter, all were doughy in the centre and barely separable without expert surgery. There was a collection of three conical ramekins each about two inches circumference containing soured cream, guacamole and a lettuce mixture. None were close to full. The sour cream lasted two wraps and the guacamole made three. The lettuce combination was another two wrap offering. I ate three wraps and left the other languishing on the side of the plate. The chilli I ate along with some rice but was left with half a bowl of rice after the chili was gone. £16.50 I am happy to pay if the meal is of reasonable quality. Normally, I would have spoken with the server, but this was our wedding anniversary and I was not about to ruin the day by bringing up the quantity of the meal.
Conclusion - What once was one of our go to venues has ,as others have commented of late, become an also ran, living on it's past reputation which will sadly, not take long to tarnish. Come on, team Oak, don't let the place die.More
