Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visited for lunch on the bank holiday weekend with family. No faults found - nicely snug and welcoming. Only a few items on the menu - which obviously means the food is fresh. I had the steak pie - excellent. Nice beer, nice staff- what...more do you need? Recommended.More

We had an excellent meal in the Old Crown after attending the village bonfire and firework display. The food was delicious and portions were generous. It was a lovely end to our short break in the Lakes. Well done Old Crown and the community of...Hesket Newmarket!More

Recommended by the Monkhouse Hill Cottages owners, who are part of the owning cooperative, we were found a table for dinner despite not booking and were charmed by the decor, atmosphere and staff. Best of all was the food though - my husband raved about...the steak and ale pie and the mango and passion fruit cheesecake and the children were defeated by the chocolate fudge cake!More

Great beer, excellent food, lovely staff, cosy surroundings. We went for dinner & we were not disappointed. The Steak & Ale pie was superb. Home made portions, definitely not bought in from an outside caterer. One of us enjoyed spinach & ricotta cannelloni which was...delicious. Portions were generous & served with freshly cooked veg or salad. Possibly the best meal out we’ve had in a long time. The pub is community owned but standards are exceptionally high. The staff are friendly & efficient and clearly working very hard. Prices are fair and standardised so all meals priced at either £15:50 or £18:50 Fabulous pub & I can’t recommend it highly enough.More

Visited here whilst camping nearby. I did pre-book, after reading about how popular the pub was. Great local beers, good hearty pie portions. Very nice this place is still open as a community pub

There is nothing not to like about this wonderful, community-owned Lakeland pub! We visited several times in a week and each visit, whether for drinks or food and drinks, was an absolute pleasure! Tazzer, the pub Collie, is also a complete legend! The welcome for...everyone is warm. The ale from the adjacent microbrewery excellent, and the food superb. The lamb shoulder was fall-from-the-bone tender and exceptionally tasty. The Steak and Heskett Ale pie was packed full of meat with 'proper' puff pastry. Accompanying veg and chips were cooked to a very high standard. All-in-all, a superb place!More

Stayed just nearby last weekend (Fri 17-20 Feb) and visited this pub on all 3 days! We loved it and were so quickly made to feel like we were regulars. All the staff were so friendly and the landlady, Karen particularly so. My partner thoroughly...enjoyed their own beers - he was so impressed with them and I sampled a fair few of their red wines ;-) We ate in here on the Friday night too. Food was fantastic. Great portion sizes all delivered hot and fresh. I particularly welcomed the variety and quantity of veg provided too. I'd highly recommend this pub & restaurant and we really do hope to stay in the area again, partly as it's a lovely village but very much so for this pub.More

My husband and I were staying close by for 3 nights and the pub was recommended so we gave it a try! What a lovely welcome we were given by the staff and the punters, as did our dog Archie. A charming pub, full of...character, open fires and home produced ales. We were persuaded to come back the next evening to form part of a team for the monthly quiz night. On this occasion we had a meal too which was excellent and very good value. We were made to feel so welcome and had a brilliant evening. It really is a fabulous community pub and we can't wait to return when next in the area. Thank you to Helen, Simon and your gorgeous smiley team.More

This was our second visit to the pub on our trips to the area and it didn’t let us down. It is a very friendly and welcoming pub and a reminder of how good pubs can be. There are several local ales on tap which...are good and the food is also excellent. There is a accent on locally sourced produce, and the kind of homely cooked food which always goes down well. It is a cosy place and is well managed and run and is clearly used by the local community and this only adds to its charm. I can’t rate this highly enough, well worth visiting if you ever have the chance.More
