I don’t get to visit here too often but went with my wife this morning. Still the best breakfast I know in the area. Quality ingredients cooked well and served by friendly staff. Lots of choice so most should be able to find something they like. I had the standard Full English and my wife the smaller version. Tea pot was topped up with water half way through our breakfast, which is always appreciated.

Warm friendly welcome, even on a busy Saturday morning. This is the 3rd time I’ve visited in the last couple of years, and the food never disappoints. The staff were great with my 3 year old, it’s so nice to enjoy really good food with a child in tow and still feel so comfortable. I would definitely recommend to anyone to visit, I know some people have mentioned prices on here, but it’s worth every penny for fresh local ingredients. I really need to make time to visit more often!

Food was exemplary. We ordered breakfast (brioche toast and full English) and had coffee and juices. Most importantly staff were friendly. The environment is calm and quiet. Highly recommend. Our first visit but won't be our last. Oh and pay by cash if you can! Card option however is available.

We were regulars of the previous owners of the cafe and felt the experience and quality of food well exceeded the pricing. We decided to give the new owners a couple of weeks to bed in before visiting as we had heard they were doing some changes. Firstly when we arrived all the staff we're busy and we stood around, we we're asked if we were being served and I sad no and the person just walked away? We were offered to wait outside as most of the tables were reserved, this was fine but then we're were brought cutlery to eat there. When we saw the menu I was happy as my old favourite was on there. However the cold drinks were really limited. The fridge has gone and there were just a couple of cans out on the counter (which brought down the look of the place). Our server was visibly stressed, she forgot a couple of things we'd asked for (even after being reminded) and when the manager told staff to do things they seemed upset. This could be the stress of a new business but it made us feel uncomfortable as customers. The food was not good, my old favourite was now just a basic egg roll I was actually shocked at the difference. The other meals were equally disappointing. It seems the prices have stayed the same but the ingredients have been stripped back and the quality wasn't there. The cakes were really overpriced and looked like they were mainly aimed at children. We had a couple to try and again the quality did not match the price. I loved this place and really hope the new owners take on feedback and make changes, I won't be going back as it is but hope in the future it gets into it stride and provides the food and service is charging for.

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience with us in our first few weeks of opening. We take all feedback on board to grow as a team and business. We had only been working together for a few short weeks so we are very much still learning the ropes of owning a business and working together in the kitchen and all the logistics that comes with that. They say it can take anywhere between 1 - 2 years to find your feet and this I feel is true. Rich & Aimee said the same when I asked their advice on this. So yes we still have a lot to implement and grow from together as a team. We really don't like turning people away, so yes we offered you a seat outside thinking a table would be free so we could serve you, this would have been the reason you were given cutlery outside. As we had just opened your server could have been on a trial shift or their first shift which is why they may have seemed nervous. I can assure you that I would never speak to my staff in any other way than I would like to be spoken too. I have learnt this from being a teacher for over 12 years so I am not sure who that comment is being referred too. We had to get rid if the fridge as per energy hikes it consumed a lot of energy and took up much needed space near the counter, where we are installing a coffee bar to allow for more seating inside. I can only apologise that you didn't enjoy your food or think it was up to standard, we do regular check backs to give all our customers the right and reason to tell us they're not happy so we an then fix the issue and ensure all our customers leave satisfied, I would have loved the opportunity to do that at the time of your visit. We are now in our 10th week as new business and we have had time to look at the variety of cakes we offer and price points and they have been adjusted accordingly. Thank you again for taking some time out to review our business, I wish you all the very best in your future endeavours. Many thanks, Andrea

Previously loved Backyard, but since it’s changed hands, I’m sad to say it has gone downhill! This may be them just getting to grips with things, so I don’t want to judge too harshly but I also feel like honest feedback is necessary for improvement! We booked a table the night before and had it confirmed but on arrival they had no knowledge of this, fortunately there was space for us. We sat down and had a look at the menu and drink wise there was only the option of 3 smoothies if you wanted a cold drink, we asked if we could have a juice or something and they said we could have an OJ, we asked if it was freshly squeezed, they said yes but it was clearly just from a bottle bought in and we didn’t get much. There should be more and better cold and soft drinks on offer in a cafe, not everyone likes or can have tea/coffee Food wise I had a veggie breakfast FOR the sweet potato falafel, but it just came with sweet potato chunks because they’d ran out, if I’d known this in advance I would’ve ordered something else. For my choice of egg it was poached or fried, I asked for scrambled they said that would be more because it’s harder to make (??) so I just said fried but little touches like that would put me off revisiting. We’d planned on getting some cakes to go but at 1pm there was basically nothing left, and they were very overpriced for what they were, so another disappointment added to the list. There was also food on the floor around our feet which again was super off-putting & we had to bank transfer the bill because it was cash only and the nearest cash point was closed. The food was quite nice and the service was ok, they definitely weren’t rude at all but we won’t be back. It’s not cheap and there’s much better places nearby to go instead :( Such a shame because it used to be so good and such great service, let’s hope they can pick it back up!

Thank you for your review. We were indeed getting to grips with everything after only being open less than 3 weeks, we also had only a few weeks prior to opening to advertise, employ and train staff along with a multitude of other anomalies that come from making my dream become a reality of opening my own coffee shop. We have had many a mountain to climb but we have given it our very best with all that's been against us. We have taken your comments on board and appreciate your early feedback as new business owners. I do recall your visit, just to go over the points you have made; >We are currently awaiting for the website to be redesigned to include an online live booking button to make bookings easier as before they were being done from multiple sources. >We have a selection of cold pre bought and in house drinks and the fresh orange you were offered was 100% freshly squeezed not by us but it was only £1 and it wasn't in the menu under our freshly squeezed juices as per the price point offered. >I can only apologise for the sweet potato falafel being just roasted sweet potato as a new business and kitchen team we do try our best to keep our stock levels consistent with the needs of the consumer and had I known during your visit you were not happy with the substitute I would have loved the opportunity to have fixed this issue for you so you were satisfied. >Scrambled isn't offered on the main menu items as scrambled isn't harder it is more costly as per inflation we have tried to set our prices to incorporate two eggs and scrambled includes more eggs, more yolk cream and butter , but we have taken your pov on board >We were told by the previous owners to outsource cakes and it was too timely, costly and expensive to do in house, so we now support our local bakers and buy from them, this means stock levels can be inconsistent and over time when the business and procedures have been in place, I am sure we will be able to offer more without having to worry about waste which can mean a food business either thrives of fails. >I am afraid all the companies we looked at to offer wifi and phone have doubled/tripled in price so I shopped around only to be told they could only offer ADSL so we have had to go round in circles for wifi, we have a notice at the counter and our the front that we are cash only sincere apologies for this inconvenience for you. Thank you again for your review I do wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Kind regards, Andrea

Visited the cafe for lunch, the lady on the till was sooo friendly and helpful, a real credit to your business. Food was nice but I do think £54 for lunch (including coffee and cake) is incredibly expensive for 3 people. Would go back for coffee but probably wouldn’t eat there at those prices I’m afraid.

Good morning Lynsey, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on your visit to the cafe. We pride ourselves on being a cook fresh kitchen using only locally sourced food and supporting our small family businesses to keep shopping local alive. We pay a premium for our goods as they are high quality, whole foods with no processed ingredients or chemicals. We believe in serving restaurant standard in a relaxed cafe setting. Quality over profit is our aim for our customers and their experience. We also don’t cut corners when preparing or serving our food. We use real butter not margarine, we make our own sauces, dressing, rubs, seasoning. We don’t use microwaves or hot holds as we believe it can affect the quality of the food & flavour. So our pricing reflects the above. Everything in our cafe comes from either a baker, butcher or greengrocer unless our head chef has made it in house. Our team regularly go out to eat in like for like eateries and we comment and feedback on quality & pricing. Personally I wouldn’t expect to pay anything less that £12-15 for breakfast/brunch/lunch dish with a drink. Unless it was maybe a greasy spoon establishment. Adding to that a cake £4-5. During the week do a cake & coffee deal any cake & reg coffee/tea for £5 just for future reference. Again thank you for sharing your experience with us, Best regards, Andrea

I went here recently with my children and partner after being recommended by a friend and wow I was blown away by the food! My children are usually very fussy eaters but they ate their entire breakfast and tried to finish mine off! The egg was cooked to perfection and the tastes of the everything put together was so good that I’ve been craving this breakfast all week! My partner loved his breakfast too and said whatever the sauce was that they used on his muffin can we please have the recipe lol. I couldn’t fault the service and the staff were so friendly and attentive! My children are messy eaters but they were so kind and nice to my kids and made us feel so welcomed. I’ve booked again for next week because we loved it so much and it was such great value for money it really did exceed our expectations! Can’t wait to come back next week, thank you for making this such a great environment for a lovely breakfast / brunch place which is clearly suitable for all people, families included :)

If I'm paying £5 for a bacon and sausage sandwich I don't think it's asking too much for it to be served on fresh bread. If you charge premium prices then why not use premium ingredients? The sandwiches took so long to be served that our pot of tea for two had already been finished so I couldn't even wash the stale sandwich down with a drink. Overall I was very disappointed.

We are really disappointed that your visit did not meet our usually high expectations. As you can see your experience is inconsistent with the rest of our reviews. We care passionately about how business and our team works incredibly hard to provide the best possible food and service so it really saddens us when we receive any negative reviews. Our bread is delivered fresh daily from our local bakery so we can only assume it had not been stored correctly (although I’m not sure of date of visit your review was written during the recent heatwave) or the sandwich had been left under the heated lamps. Either way we apologise. We also apologise for the wait for food. As we cook everything fresh to order there can be a wait during our busier periods, staff should communicate this when ordering. Our bread is supplied by a local bakery and our bacon and sausages are supplied by our local butcher. Our sandwiches are very generously portioned so we believe £5 is a fair price and that we are using premium ingredients. We really wish that you had given us the opportunity to address your disappointment when you visited. Our staff work really hard, but they are human so sometimes make mistakes. However they are also very obliging and would have happily replaced / refunded your sandwich and pot of tea. In the current climate, following a disastrous 18 months for the hospitality industry, surely it would have been fair to give us a chance to rectify any problems there and then and then if we had not taken sufficient steps to address your issue then given us a 1 star review?

The cafe has changed hands in recent months. This is the second time I’ve been since new ownership. Arrived around 11am, so still breakfast service. We were a little taken aback at the prices. I fully understand that utilities have increased and this has a knock on effect with everything. However, £9.00 ish, for mushrooms on toast is steep. Avocado on toast, around £9.50. Add eggs, you’re looking at £11.50. The footfall was noticeably lighter and I suspect this is why. The ketchup in a Heinz container - was not Heinz. The tea for 2 was served in a cafetière. Why? Paying a premium, I expect the condiments and tableware to match this. The decor is nice. New tables and chairs /benches look attractive. Would be more comfortable with seat pads. The staff member with red hair was noticeably absent. She always had a smile and nothing too much trouble. Unfortunately today, there was no smiles from the staff including the proprietor. Everything was “ok” with our food. Which is what we were asked during a checkback. Just that. It wasn’t amazing. Which is how I used to describe the food previously and recommend it to all my friends and colleagues. I’ve always been a fan of The Backyard. My friend and I used to come weekly. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning. The prices are too high when compared to the food on the plate. Also, future customers should be aware that it’s now cash only. I get it, banks charge fees. I take no joy in writing a less than complimentary review. I do prefer to support small businesses but it’s important to give an honest review and not just give 5 stars because times are hard. They’re hard for everyone. The atmosphere isn’t the same and the food doesn’t justify the prices.

Visited here for the first time since it’s had new management, I’ll be honest I was skeptical as I visited the previous one often and knew it would have big boots to fill. I already knew from Facebook that the cake selection was no where near as big or as high quality as it used to be, but the food still looked very good! There are positives to be had - staff friendly/attentive, nice range of coffee and a good menu. However my fears were confirmed, it really did not live up to the standard at all. I had the mcyard, which I had many of times from there when the previous owners had it. Baring in mind the menu is rather pricey, and this simple McMuffin style sandwich has increased in price from 7.95 to 9.50, it was way below standard. The sausage patty and rarebit used to make this sandwich what it was, unfortunately the sausage was bland, so bland you couldn’t actually taste it, i the sandwich tasted like egg, nothing else. Myself and 2 others on our table had this, and they were also in agreement. The cake selection was extremely disappointing. Basic small circle brownies at a rip off price of £3.30… in different flavours, that was it. No pastries, no donuts, nothing. So If you don’t like brownies or chocolate cake, then there will be option for you. Really gutted to leave this review as I used to love this place, but upon looking on here I can also see that other people are saying the same. I definitely won’t be rushing back here, as there are other cafes fairly local to this place that do a much more high quality menu for a similar price, if not less.

Good morning Shan B thank you for taking the time to review your experience in the first few weeks of opening. Yes they were big boots very much agreed on this, so much so we have continued to use the same local suppliers that they used. I apologise that you was not happy with the standard or taste we make regular check backs to ensure customers are happy with their dishes. Giving us time to correct the issue and make sure we know at the time of serve to do a quality check back on our produce. The latest price for the mcyard when the previous owners were there was £9, the £7.95 price you have quoted may have been an old menu on line? We increased our prices as per inflation and suppliers prices rises, after doing research on this was at 5% so that's why it is £9.50. We are slowly increasing more cakes to our selection and hope to do some in-house in the future. One of the main things Rich said to me when he left was, outsource the cakes, as with price hikes and energy bills the cost to make them in-house, along with a full menu, it isn't sustainable, so we took that advice on board, to the dismay of those that came just for the cakes, which is a real shame but we have had to learn to adapt and make changes during this time, so we don't end up sinking before we can swim. Thank you again Shan B we do take all our reviews on board and reflect accordingly. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Many thanks, Andrea

Would give it six stars if I could. We both had The Full English and the quality of the ingredients surpasses what most others serve. All cooked to perfection. Staff very friendly and the owner, Andrea, always comes out to say hello. Don’t get to visit too often but it’s the highlight of our day when we do. The breakfast is substantial and we won’t need to eat again until tonight. Can’t recommend the place too highly.

I’d heard the cafe had changed hands which concerned me as it was brilliant previously. So pleased to report that it’s even better! Breakfast was great - now this isn’t a regular £5 or £6 fry up, it’s cooked really well and it’s not run of the mill, yes it’s more expensive but you are getting a different experience. Sausages are absolutely banging - and those baked beans… well I’ve never tasted anything like them!

Just popped in for a breakfast. The breakfasts we ordered were probably amongst the best we've eaten in a long time - hone made baked beans were delicious. Really good choice of items on breakfast menu including veggie and vegan options. Not the cheapest but don't mind paying for quality - worth every penny. If you're in Kingswinford and at a loss for breakfast definitely come here you will not be disappointed.

Visited The Backyard Café with my family for some Brunch and was not disappointed. We ordered 3 pork sandwiches and 2 salmon and eggs. They were delicious! While we was there we noticed how much the place looks after their staff making sure they have lunch themselves which I thought was a very nice touch! I will be definitely returning.

Myself and my 2 daughters came for lunch after hearing so many positive comments about the place. We were happy to be able to get a table as the restaurant is very small. First thing that happened was my daughter knocked her drink over. The staff member was great, no fuss was made it was cleaned up and a new drink brought on the house. When our meals came my daughter wasn’t enjoying her sausage as she wanted it more well cooked (purely personal preference) she didn’t complain and just moved the sausage pate to one side. A very observant member of staff noticed and asked if everything was ok, my daughter said yes it’s fine it’s just not as cooked as well as I would have liked. The staff member apologised and offered to bring something else. My daughter said no it was fine and she was happy. The staff member asked for her card to refund the meal but she said that wasn’t necessary as the rest of the meal was lovely. The member of staff then refunded her card. I have never received such excellent customer service as this and now realise how they have gained their excellent reputation, well done backyard cafe we will be back.
