Mr. J's is clean and close to the CTA Red Line stop at Chicago Ave. Hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken are its mainstays. I had two of their hotdogs on the run. Chicago dogs (or "dawgs") are a point of pride for the city. These were adequate boiled sausages with a bun that hadn't been steamed but was tasty. Nothing... More

First time in town. Saw this place walking around town. Buddy and I like chicago style dogs. Overall not bad. The flat sliced picklez insted of a spear on the dog was different ans easier to eat. Not anything to brav about but decent for a snack

Great burgers and fries. Hot, fresh and well prepared. Reliably consistent. Like the sport peppers. Check it out!

I have been going to Mr. J's Dawg n' Burger since 1978, when I started as a freshman at the nearby Moody Bible Institute. This burger joint was started by a Greek family and have continuously served up excellent char-broiled burgers. I always get the #1: burger with cheese, fresh hot fries and a drink. Many people get their famously... More

I've been eating at this place for over 30 years. Their Dagwood is so good that I used to drive in from college buy a half dozen of them, and then heat them up in my toaster. (The secret is to heat them upside down in the toaster so the bread doesn't get soggy.) Its just a little hole in... More

Hey, I don't know, I thought this place was excellent. Cab driver took us straight to the place based on description only because I couldn't remember the name of it at the time, and was not even sure what street it was on. Stopped in late night on a Friday night and got a Chicago-style dog, or dawg. I think... More

We were walking back to our hotel on the Mag Mile and my wife noticed this spot we we gave them a try. I ordered the Italian Beef sandwich and my wife had the Chicago dog. My sandwich was ok, it needed more meat but the flavor was good. My wife enjoyed her dog. Overall I would say this is... More

In today's day of gourmet burgers I miss the plain old fashioned burger and my first experience with Mr. j's was in 1981 when I first came to Chicago. I recently took my wife there for dinner; nothing like showing the wife a good time, and she loved the burger. The place is in need of a good cleaning and... More

Were looking for food very late at night and got pointed here. I think they were open until 2:00 am. Only a few blocks from the hotel even.Varied choice of munchable gut filling food. Lots of dogs/sausages and burgers to choose from. All decent and reasonably priced.

Neighbourhood Profile
Gold Coast
Located just north of The Loop, Gold Coast is one of Chicago’s most affluent and popular neighborhoods. The original Playboy, Hugh Hefner, once had a mansion here. In addition to prestigious hotels, historic mansions and luxury high-rise apartments, you’ll also find upscale specialty boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants. Walk along Oak Street for your shopping fix and dance through the night along Rush Street. The Newberry Library is also a great stop to check out noteworthy exhibits and rare book collections.
