When I was in college, there were a number of coffee houses that had evolved from the Beatnik days into places that were comfortable, a little funky, served good coffee and sandwiches with a lot of bean sprouts. Kafein is one of those places (although I did not see sprouts on the menu). A warm and welcoming place with people... More

Why go to a boring chain like Starbucks when there are so many great alternatives around? My partner and I got iced coffee and iced tea (from a dozen choices), also a yummy grilled cheese sandwich and lentil soup/sandwich combo. Reasonably priced. And fast table service! Also a really lovely atmosphere. Tables, of course, but also leather wing chairs by... More

Kafein offers a relaxed coffeehouse in the somewhat plush Evanston area. Its decoration is ecletic, funky and with personality, including the decorated tables. It's a pleasant change from the cookie-cutter Starbucks scene or even the Peets across the street. The tables and booths provide a variety of different spaces to talk with friends or to get some work done. The... More

Perfect place for a quiet cup of coffee and a good book, afternoon cake or a pit stop on a shopping spree.

I like the secondhand, arthouse-ish vibe of the place. It's a nice break from the sterile sameness of your average "Starbucks." The coffee? Not the best in the world - I don't think you'll be having deep conversations with a barista about what side of the volcano in Guatemala these beans were grown - but it'll do. I didn't try... More

Went here after visiting Found. Cakes were fantastic (carrot cake in particular). Friendly staff and fun tables. Fun after dinner place to watch people go by.....

We went to Kafein early on a Sat. evening. The place was empty. My husband ordered a sandwich. They were out of roast beef. He ordered a different sandwich. The "double meat" sandwich consisted of one slice of turkey and one slice of ham all hidden under melted cheese on toasted white sandwich bread. They couldn't include the side of... More

Dessert and coffee. We always come here after for meeting friends or after a casual dinner. The desserts are delicious and the ambiance is like Toulouse-Lautrec is about to walk in the door. Wine only, no absinthe, but it's a favorite of ours.

Good coffee drinks, chill music. Might be too loud for some. Electic decor, warm and cozy. On a weeknight, it's sparsely populated but still lively. The booths have just enough space to let your papers sprawl and get some work done.

We dropped in for a quick bite and a drink. This place seems to be a student hangout, with many patrons working on term papers on the free wifi. The service was friendly but somewhat lackadaisical. The place didn't look fastidiously clean. I had to grab napkins from the next table, and there weren't any in sight at any of... More
